Gilbert damping phenomenology for two-sublattice magnets

We present a systematic phenomenological description of Gilbert damping in two-sublattice magnets. Our theory covers the full range of materials from ferro- via ferri- to antiferromagnets. Following a Rayleigh dissipation functional approach within a Lagrangian classical field formulation, the theory captures intra- as well as cross-sublattice terms in the Gilbert damping, parameterized by a 2$\times$2 matrix. When spin-pumping into an adjacent conductor causes dissipation, we obtain the corresponding Gilbert damping matrix in terms of the interfacial spin-mixing conductances. Our model reproduces the experimentally observed enhancement of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth in a ferrimagnet close to its compensation temperature without requiring an increased Gilbert parameter. It also predicts new contributions to damping in an antiferromagnet and suggests the resonance linewidths as a direct probe of the sublattice asymmetry, which may stem from boundary or bulk.

Magnetostriction in Antiferromagnets

We consider magnetostriction in magnetic materials. Starting from a microscopic lattice model of the magneto-elastic coupling, we derive the continuum magnetostriction Hamiltonian in cubic ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. In ferromagnets, our results agree with established results. In antiferromagnets, we find a new central contribution which reflects the spin ordering. The additional term is essential in certain antiferromagnets where magnetic moments order in antiparallel ferromagnetic planes characterized by a normal axis. In such antiferromagnets, we predict that the magnetostrictive strain depends on the direction of the normal axis. Our findings are relevant for materials such as NiO and CoO, where there is a new spin-structure dependent strain, but not in RbMnF$_3$. We propose an experimental procedure to verify the importance of our findings in NiO that can be readily generalized to other materials. We also generalize the theory to include long-wavelength magnetoelastic coupling. We expect that the spin-structure dependent term critically affects the magnon-phonon coupling.

Many-body theory of spin-current driven instabilities in magnetic insulators

We consider a magnetic insulator in contact with a normal metal. We derive a self-consistent Keldysh effective action for the magnon gas that contains the effects of magnon-magnon interactions and contact with the metal to lowest order. Self-consistent expressions for the dispersion relation, temperature and chemical potential for magnons are derived. Based on this effective action, we study instabilities of the magnon gas that arise due to spin-current flowing across the interface between the normal metal and the magnetic insulator. We find that the stability phase diagram is modified by an interference between magnon-magnon interactions and interfacial magnon-electron coupling. These effects persist at low temperatures and for thin magnetic insulators.

Green's function formalism for spin transport in metal-insulator-metal heterostructures

We develop a Green's function formalism for spin transport through heterostructures that contain metallic leads and insulating ferromagnets. While this formalism in principle allows for the inclusion of various magnonic interactions, we focus on Gilbert damping. As an application, we consider ballistic spin transport by exchange magnons in a metal-insulator-metal heterostructure with and without disorder. For the former case, we show that the interplay between disorder and Gilbert damping leads to spin current fluctuations. For the case without disorder, we obtain the dependence of the transmitted spin current on the thickness of the ferromagnet. Moreover, we show that the results of the Green's function formalism agree in the clean and continuum limit with those obtained from the linearized stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The developed Green's function formalism is a natural starting point for numerical studies of magnon transport in heterostructures that contain normal metals and magnetic insulators.

Piezospintronic effect in honeycomb antiferromagnets

The emission of pure spin currents by mechanical deformations, the piezospintronic effect, in antiferromagnets is studied. We characterize the piezospintronic effect in an antiferromagnetic honeycomb monolayer in response to external strains. It is shown that the strain tensor components can be evaluated in terms of the spin Berry phase. In addition, we propose an experimental setup to detect the piezo-spin current generated in the piezospintronic material through the inverse spin Hall effect. Our results apply to a wide family of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic materials without inversion symmetry, such as the transition-metal chalcogenophosphates materials MPX3 (M=V, Mn; X=S, Se, Te) and NiPSe3.

Controlling skyrmion helicity via engineered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Single magnetic skyrmion dynamics in chiral magnets with a spatially inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is considered. Based on the relation between DMI coupling and skyrmion helicity, it is argued that the latter must be included as an extra degree of freedom in the dynamics of skyrmions. An effective description of the skyrmion dynamics for an arbitrary inhomogeneous DMI coupling is obtained through the collective coordinates method. The resulting generalized Thiele's equation is a dynamical system for the center of mass position and helicity of the skyrmion. It is found that the dissipative tensor and hence the Hall angle become helicity dependent. The skyrmion position and helicity dynamics are fully characterized by our model in two particular examples of engineered DMI coupling: half-planes with opposite-sign DMI and linearly varying DMI. In light of the experiment of Shibata {\it et al}. [Nature Nanotech. {\bf 8}, 723 (2013)] on the magnitude and sign of the DMI, our results constitute the first step toward a more complete understanding of the skyrmion helicity as a new degree of freedom that could be harnessed in future high-density magnetic storage and logic devices.

Dynamical quenching of tunneling in molecular magnets

It is shown that a single molecular magnet placed in a rapidly oscillating magnetic field displays the phenomenon of quenching of tunneling processes. The results open a way to manipulate the quantum states of molecular magnets by means of radiation in the terahertz range. Our analysis separates the time evolution into slow and fast components thereby obtaining an effective theory for the slow dynamics. This effective theory presents quenching of the tunnel effect. In particular, stands out its difference with the so-called coherent destruction of tunneling. We support our prediction with numerical evidence based on an exact solution of the Schrödinger's equation.

Antiferromagnetic Magnonic Crystals

We describe the features of magnonic crystals based upon antiferromagnetic elements. Our main results are that with a periodic modulation of either magnetic fields or system characteristics, such as the anisotropy, it is possible to tailor the spin wave spectra of antiferromagnetic systems into a band-like organization that displays a segregation of allowed and forbidden bands. The main features of the band structure, such as bandwidths and bandgaps, can be readily manipulated. Our results provide a natural link between two steadily growing fields of spintronics: antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics.

Brownian motion of massive skyrmions forced by spin polarized currents

We report on the thermal effects on the motion of current-driven massive magnetic skyrmions. The reduced equation for the motion of skyrmion has the form of a stochastic generalized Thiele's equation. We propose an ansatz for the magnetization texture of a non-rigid single skyrmion that depends linearly with the velocity. By utilizing this ansatz it is is found that the mass of skyrmion is closely related to intrinsic skyrmion parameters, such as Gilbert damping, skyrmion-charge and dissipative force. We have found an exact expression for the average drift velocity as well as the mean-square velocity of the skyrmion. The longitudinal and transverse mobility of skyrmions for small spin-velocity of electrons is also determined and found to be independent of the skyrmion mass.

Josephson Effects in a Bose-Einstein Condensate of Magnons

A phenomenological theory is developed, that accounts for the collective dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. In terms of such description we discuss the nature of spontaneous macroscopic interference between magnon clouds, highlighting the close relation between such effects and the well known Josephson effects. Using those ideas we present a detailed calculation of the Josephson oscillations between two magnon clouds, spatially separated in a magnonic Josephson junction.

Thermally Assisted Current-Driven Skyrmion Motion

We study the behavior of skyrmions in thin films under the action of stochastic torques arising from thermal fluctuations. We find that the Brownian motion of skyrmions is described by a stochastic Thiele's equation and its corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation is recognized as the one for a high-friction Brownian particle which has been studied extensively in different physical contexts. It is shown that thermal fluctuations favor the skyrmion motion allowing a finite mobility even in presence of pinning traps. We calculate explicitly the mobility tensor of skyrmions in linear response to an electric current finding that it increases with temperature.
