Equivariant prequantization and the moment map

If ω is a closed G-invariant 2-form and μ a moment map, then we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for equivariant pre-quantizability that can be computed in terms of the moment map μ. We also compute the obstructions to lift the action of G to a pre-quantization bundle of ω. Our results are valid for any compact and connected Lie group G.

Equivariant differential characters and Chern-Simons bundles

We construct Chern-Simons bundles as $\mathrm{Aut}^{+}P$-equivariant $U(1)$ -bundles with connection over the space of connections $\mathcal{A}_{P}$ on a principal $G$-bundle $P\rightarrow M$. We show that the Chern-Simons bundles are determined up to an isomorphisms by means of its equivariant holonomy. The space of equivariant holonomies is shown to coincide with the space of equivariant differential characteres of second order. Furthermore, we prove that the Chern-Simons theory provides, in a natural way, an equivariant differential character that determines the Chern-Simons bundles. Our construction can be applied in the case in which $M$ is a compact manifold of even dimension and for arbitrary bundle $P$ and group $G$. The results are also generalized to the case of the action of diffeomorphisms on the space of Riemannian metrics. In particular, in dimension $2$ a Chern-Simons bundle over the Teichmüller space is obtained.

Locality and universality in gravitational anomaly cancellation

We obtain necesary and sufficient conditions for gravitational anomaly cancellation. We show that perturbative gravitational anomalies can never be cancelled. In a similar way, in dimensions $n\neq3\operatorname{mod}4$ it is impossible to cancell global anomalies. However, in dimensions $n=3\operatorname{mod}4$ global anomalies can be cancelled. We prove that the unique way to cancel the anomaly is by using a Chern-Simons counterterm. Furthermore, the relationship between the problems of locality and universality is analyzed for gravitational anomalies.

On the geometrical interpretation of locality in anomaly cancellation

A notion of local section of the determinant line bundle is defined giving necessary and suficient conditions for anomaly cancellation compatible with locality. This definition gives an intrinsic geometrical interpretation of the local counterterms allowed in the renormalization program of quantum field theory. For global anomalies the conditions for anomaly cancellation are expressed in terms of the equivariant holonomy of the Bismut-Freed connection.

Differential characters and cohomology of the moduli of flat Connections

Let $π\colon P\to M$ be a principal bundle and $p$ an invariant polynomial of degree r on the Lie algebra of the structure group. The theory of Chern-Simons differential characters is exploited to define an homology map $χ^{k} : H_{2r-k-1}(M)\times H_{k}(\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G})\to \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, for $k<r-1$, where $\mathcal{F} /\mathcal{G}$ is the moduli space of flat connections of $π$ under the action of a subgroup $\mathcal{G}$ of the gauge group. The differential characters of first order are related to the Dijkgraaf-Witten action for Chern-Simons Theory. The second order characters are interpreted geometrically as the holonomy of a connection in a line bundle over $\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G})$. The relationship with other constructions in the literature is also analyzed.

Conserved current for the Cotton tensor, black hole entropy and equivariant Pontryagin forms

The Chern-Simons lagrangian density in the space of metrics of a 3-dimensional manifold M is not invariant under the action of diffeomorphisms on M. However, its Euler-Lagrange operator can be identified with the Cotton tensor, which is invariant under diffeomorphims. As the lagrangian is not invariant, Noether Theorem cannot be applied to obtain conserved currents. We show that it is possible to obtain an equivariant conserved current for the Cotton tensor by using the first equivariant Pontryagin form on the bundle of metrics. Finally we define a hamiltonian current which gives the contribution of the Chern-Simons term to the black hole entropy, energy and angular momentum.

Non-Hamiltonian Actions and Lie-Algebra Cohomology of Vector Fields

Two examples of $\mathrm{Diff}^+S^1$-invariant closed two-forms obtained from forms on jet bundles, which does not admit equivariant moment maps are presented. The corresponding cohomological obstruction is computed and shown to coincide with a nontrivial Lie algebra cohomology class on $H^2(\mathfrak{X}(S^1))$.
