On some inequalities for the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function in the complex plane

For the two-parameter Mittag-Leffler function $E_{\alpha,\beta}$ with $\alpha > 0$ and $\beta \ge 0,$ we consider the question whether $|E_{\alpha,\beta}(z)|$ and $E_{\alpha,\beta}(\Re z)$ are comparable on the whole complex plane. We show that the inequality $|E_{\alpha,\beta}(z)|\le E_{\alpha,\beta}(\Re z)$ holds globally if and only if $E_{\alpha,\beta}(-x)$ is completely monotone on $(0,\infty)$. For $\alpha\in [1,2)$ we prove that the complete monotonicity of $1/E_{\alpha,\beta}(x)$ on $(0,\infty)$ is necessary for the global inequality $|E_{\alpha,\beta}(z)|\ge E_{\alpha,\beta}(\Re z),$ and also sufficient for $\alpha =1.$ For $\alpha \ge 2$ we show that the absence of non-real zeros for $E_{\alpha,\beta}$ is sufficient for the global inequality $|E_{\alpha,\beta}(z)|\ge E_{\alpha,\beta}(\Re z),$ and also necessary for $\alpha =2.$ All these results have an explicit description in terms of the values of the parameters $\alpha,\beta.$ Along the way, several inequalities for $E_{\alpha,\beta}$ on the half-plane $\{\Re z \ge 0\}$ are established, and a characterization of its log-convexity and log-concavity on the positive half-line is obtained.

A computational approach to exponential-type variable-order fractional differential equations

We investigate the properties of some recently developed variable-order differential operators involving order transition functions of exponential type. Since the characterisation of such operators is performed in the Laplace domain it is necessary to resort to accurate numerical methods to derive the corresponding behaviours in the time domain. In this regard, we develop a computational procedure to solve variable-order fractional differential equations of this novel class. Furthermore, we provide some numerical experiments to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Renewal processes linked to fractional relaxation equations with variable order

We introduce and study here a renewal process defined by means of a time-fractional relaxation equation with derivative order $α(t)$ varying with time $t\geq0$. In particular, we use the operator introduced by Scarpi in the Seventies and later reformulated in the regularized Caputo sense in Garrappa et al. (2021), inside the framework of the so-called general fractional calculus. The model obtained extends the well-known time-fractional Poisson process of fixed order $α\in (0,1)$ and tries to overcome its limitation consisting in the constancy of the derivative order (and therefore of the memory degree of the interarrival times) with respect to time. The variable order renewal process is proved to fall outside the usual subordinated representation, since it can not be simply defined as a Poisson process with random time (as happens in the standard fractional case). Finally a related continuous-time random walk model is analysed and its limiting behavior established.

On the fractional Laplacian of variable order

We present a novel definition of variable-order fractional Laplacian on Rn based on a natural generalization of the standard Riesz potential. Our definition holds for values of the fractional parameter spanning the entire open set (0, n/2). We then discuss some properties of the fractional Poisson's equation involving this operator and we compute the corresponding Green function, for which we provide some instructive examples for specific problems.

Variable-order fractional calculus: a change of perspective

Several approaches to the formulation of a fractional theory of calculus of "variable order" have appeared in the literature over the years. Unfortunately, most of these proposals lack a rigorous mathematical framework. We consider an alternative view on the problem, originally proposed by G. Scarpi in the early seventies, based on a naive modification of the representation in the Laplace domain of standard kernels functions involved in (constant-order) fractional calculus. We frame Scarpi's ideas within recent theory of General Fractional Derivatives and Integrals, that mostly rely on the Sonine condition, and investigate the main properties of the emerging variable-order operators. Then, taking advantage of powerful and easy-to-use numerical methods for the inversion of Laplace transforms of functions defined in the Laplace domain, we discuss some practical applications of the variable-order Scarpi integral and derivative.

On the Kuzmin model in fractional Newtonian gravity

Fractional Newtonian gravity, based on the fractional generalization of Poisson's equation for Newtonian gravity, is a novel approach to Galactic dynamics aimed at providing an alternative to the dark matter paradigm through a non-local modification of Newton's theory. We provide an in-depth discussion of the gravitational potential for the Kuzmin disk within this new approach. Specifically, we derive an integral and a series representation for the potential, we verify its asymptotic behavior at large scales, and we provide illuminating plots of the resulting equipotential surfaces.

Stability of fractional-order systems with Prabhakar derivatives

Fractional derivatives of Prabhakar type are capturing an increasing interest since their ability to describe anomalous relaxation phenomena (in dielectrics and other fields) showing a simultaneous nonlocal and nonlinear behaviour. In this paper we study the asymptotic stability of systems of differential equations with the Prabhakar derivative, providing an exact characterization of the corresponding stability region. Asymptotic expansions (for small and large arguments) of the solution of linear differential equations of Prabhakar type and a numerical method for nonlinear systems are derived. Numerical experiments are hence presented to validate theoretical findings.

On a generalized three-parameter Wright function of the Le Roy type

Recently S. Gerhold and R. Garra-F. Polito independently introduced a new function related to the special functions of Mittag-Leffler family. This function is a generalization of the function studied by E. Le Roy in the period 1895-1905 in connection with the problem of analytic continuation of power series with a finite radius of convergence. In our note we obtain two integral representations of this special function, calculate its Laplace transform, determine an asymptotic expansion of this function on the negative semi-axis (in the case of an integer third parameter $γ$) and provide its continuation to the case of a negative first parameter $α$. An asymptotic result is illustrated by numerical calculations. Discussion on possible further studies and open questions are also presented.

Why fractional derivatives with nonsingular kernels should not be used

In recent years, many papers discuss the theory and applications of new fractional-order derivatives that are constructed by replacing the singular kernel of the Caputo or Riemann-Liouville derivative by a non-singular (i.e., bounded) kernel. It will be shown here, through rigorous mathematical reasoning, that these non-singular kernel derivatives suffer from several drawbacks which should forbid their use. They fail to satisfy the fundamental theorem of fractional calculus since they do not admit the existence of a corresponding convolution integral of which the derivative is the left-inverse; and the value of the derivative at the initial time $t=0$ is always zero, which imposes an unnatural restriction on the differential equations and models where these derivatives can be used. For the particular cases of the so-called Caputo-Fabrizio and Atangana-Baleanu derivatives, it is shown that when this restriction holds the derivative can be simply expressed in terms of integer derivatives and standard Caputo fractional derivatives, thus demonstrating that these derivatives contain nothing new.

On initial conditions for fractional delay differential equations

Derivatives of fractional order are introduced in different ways: as left-inverse of the fractional integral or by generalizing the limit of the difference quotient defining integer-order derivatives. Although the two approaches lead (under standard smoothness assumptions) to equivalent operators, the first one does not involve the function at the left of the initial point where, instead, the latter forces the function to assume selected values. With fractional delay differential equations new problems arise: the presence of the delay imposes to assign the solution not just at the initial point but on an entire interval. Due to the freedom in the choice of the initial function, some inconsistencies with the values forced by the fractional derivative are possible and the operators may no longer be equivalent. In this paper we discuss the initialization of fractional delay differential equations, we investigate the effects of the initial condition not only on the solution but also on the fractional operator as well and we study the difference between solutions obtained by incorporating or not the initial function in the memory of the fractional derivative. The exact solution of a family of linear equations is obtained by the Laplace transform whilst numerical methods are used to solve nonlinear problems; the different results are therefore shown and commented.

A practical guide to Prabhakar fractional calculus

The Mittag-Leffler function is universally acclaimed as the Queen function of fractional calculus. The aim of this work is to survey the key results and applications emerging from the three-parameter generalization of this function, known as the Prabhakar function. Specifically, after reviewing key historical events that led to the discovery and modern development of this peculiar function, we discuss how the latter allows one to introduce an enhanced scheme for fractional calculus. Then, we summarize the progress in the application of this new general framework to physics and renewal processes. We also provide a collection of results on the numerical evaluation of the Prabhakar function.

Computing the matrix Mittag-Leffler function with applications to fractional calculus

The computation of the Mittag-Leffler (ML) function with matrix arguments, and some applications in fractional calculus, are discussed. In general the evaluation of a scalar function in matrix arguments may require the computation of derivatives of possible high order depending on the matrix spectrum. Regarding the ML function, the numerical computation of its derivatives of arbitrary order is a completely unexplored topic; in this paper we address this issue and three different methods are tailored and investigated. The methods are combined together with an original derivatives balancing technique in order to devise an algorithm capable of providing high accuracy. The conditioning of the evaluation of matrix ML functions is also studied. The numerical experiments presented in the paper show that the proposed algorithm provides high accuracy, very often close to the machine precision.

Neglecting nonlocality leads to unreliable numerical methods for fractional differential equations

In the paper titled "New numerical approach for fractional differential equations" by A. Atangana and K.M. Owolabi [Math. Model. Nat. Phenom., 13(1), 2018], it is presented a method for the numerical solution of some fractional differential equations. The numerical approximation is obtained by using just local information and the scheme does not present a memory term; moreover, it is claimed that third-order convergence is surprisingly obtained by simply using linear polynomial approximations. In this note we show that methods of this kind are not reliable and lead to completely wrong results since the nonlocal nature of fractional differential operators cannot be neglected. We illustrate the main weaknesses in the derivation and analysis of the method in order to warn other researchers and scientist to overlook this and other methods devised on similar basis and avoid their use for the numerical simulation of fractional differential equations.

The Prabhakar or three parameter Mittag--Leffler function: theory and application

The Prabhakar function (namely, a three parameter Mittag-Leffler function) is investigated. This function plays a fundamental role in the description of the anomalous dielectric properties in disordered materials and heterogeneous systems manifesting simultaneous nonlocality and nonlinearity and, more generally, in models of Havriliak-Negami type. After reviewing some of the main properties of the function, the asymptotic expansion for large arguments is investigated in the whole complex plane and, with major emphasis, along the negative semi-axis. Fractional integral and derivative operators of Prabhakar type are hence considered and some nonlinear heat conduction equations with memory involving Prabhakar derivatives are studied.

Models of dielectric relaxation based on completely monotone functions

The relaxation properties of dielectric materials are described, in the frequency domain, according to one of the several models proposed over the years: Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts, Cole-Cole, Cole-Davidson, Havriliak-Negami (with its modified version) and Excess wing model are among the most famous. Their description in the time domain involves some mathematical functions whose knowledge is of fundamental importance for a full understanding of the models. In this work, we survey the main dielectric models and we illustrate the corresponding time-domain functions. In particular, we stress the attention on the completely monotone character of the relaxation and response functions. We also provide a characterization of the models in terms of differential operators of fractional order.

On complete monotonicity of the Prabhakar function and non-Debye relaxation in dielectrics

The three parameters Mittag--Leffler function (often referred as the Prabhakar function) has important applications, mainly in physics of dielectrics, in describing anomalous relaxation of non--Debye type. This paper concerns with the investigation of the conditions, on the characteristic parameters, under which the function is locally integrable and completely monotonic; these properties are essential for the physical feasibility of the corresponding models. In particular the classical Havriliak--Negami model is extended to a wider range of the parameters. The problem of the numerical evaluation of the three parameters Mittag--Leffler function is also addressed and three different approaches are discussed and compared. Numerical simulations are hence used to validate the theoretical findings and present some graphs of the function under investigation.

On Volterra functions and Ramanujan integrals

Volterra functions were introduced at the beginning of the twentieth century as solutions of some integral equations of convolution type with logarithmic kernel. Since then, few authors have studied this family of functions and faced with the problem of providing a clear understanding of their asymptotic behaviour for small and large arguments. This paper reviews some of the most important results on Volterra functions and in particular collects, into a quite general framework, several results on their asymptotic expansions, these results turn out to be useful not only for the full understanding of the behaviour of the Volterra functions but also for their numerical computation. The connections with integrals of Ramanujan type, which have several important applications, are also discussed.
