Jaynes-Cummings dynamics in strong coupling for many-interacting-qubit quantum Rabi models

The present work focuses on the strong/weak interaction of many-body spin-systems with a cavity mode. It introduces the necessity of redefining the physical conditions determining the strong/weak coupling regime in those systems. In more complex systems, the effective coupling emerging from the collective dynamics may differ indeed from the actual coupling of each individual subsystem with the bosonic field. This is shown by highlighting some counter-intuitive dynamical effects properly related to the coupling regime: a Jaynes-Cummings dynamics emerging although a strong interaction is present. The universality of this result is demonstrated through the analysis of three distinct systems: a two-qubit, a two-qutrit, and an $N$-qubit chain quantum Rabi models.

Axion field influence on Josephson junction quasipotential

The direct effect of an axion field on Josephson junctions is analyzed through the consequences on the effective potential barrier that prevents the junction from switching from the superconducting to the finite-voltage state. We describe a method to reliably compute the quasipotential with stochastic simulations, which allows to span the coupling parameter from weakly interacting axion to tight interactions. As a result, we obtain that the axion field induces a change in the potential barrier, therefore determining a significant detectable effect for such a kind of elusive particle.

Quantum phase transitions for an integrable quantum Rabi-like model with two interacting qubits

A two-interacting-qubit quantum Rabi-like model with vanishing transverse fields on the qubit-pair is studied. Independently of the coupling regime, this model can be exactly and unitarily reduced to two independent single-spin quantum Rabi models, where the spin-spin coupling plays the role of the transverse field. This transformation and the analytical treatment of the single-spin quantum Rabi model provide the key to prove the integrability of our model. The existence of different first-order quantum phase transitions, characterized by discontinuous two-spin magnetization, mean photon number and concurrence, is brought to light.

Spin-spin coupling-based quantum and classical phase transitions in two-impurity spin-boson models

The class of two-interacting-impurity spin-boson models with vanishing transverse fields on the spin-pair is studied. The model can be exactly mapped into two independent standard single-impurity spin-boson models where the role of the tunnelling parameter is played by the spin-spin coupling. The dynamics of the magnetization is analysed for different levels of (an)isotropy. Further, the existence of a decoherence-free subspace as well as of both classical and quantum (first-order and Kosterlitz-Thouless type) phase transitions, in the Omhic regime, is brought to light.

Axion-induced oscillations in Josephson qubits

An effective quantum description of the axion is proposed as a two-level dynamic system together with a spin-spin Hamiltonian for a coupled axion-Josephson qubit system. The interaction between axion and Josephson Junction can be responsible for a resonance effect, when the axion and the Josephson frequencies match. Thus, experimentally detectable oscillations induced in the Josephson qubit by its interaction with the axion are clearly highlighted. This phenomenon, causing a periodic magnetization reversal in the junction, can be exploited for the axion detection in the quantum limit of low noise.

Josephson junction-based axion detection through resonant activation

We discuss the resonant activation phenomenon on a Josephson junction due to the coupling of the Josephson system with axions. We show how such an effect can be exploited for axion detection. A nonmonotonic behavior, with a minimum, of the mean switching time from the superconducting to the resistive state versus the ratio of the axion energy and the Josephson plasma energy is found. We demonstrate how variations in switching times make it possible to detect the presence of the axion field. An experimental protocol for observing axions through their coupling with a Josephson system is proposed.

Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state generation in qubit-chains via a single $π/2$-pulse

A protocol for generating Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system of $N$ coupled qubits is proposed. The Hamiltonian model assumes $N$-wise interactions between the $N$ qubits and the presence of a controllable time-dependent field acting upon one spin only. Implementing such a scenario is in the experimental reach. The dynamical problem is exactly solved thanks to the symmetries of the Hamiltonian model. The possibility of generating GHZ states under both adiabatic and non-adiabatic conditions is shown and discussed in detail.

Stochastic 0-dimensional Biogeochemical Flux Model: Effect of temperature fluctuations on the dynamics of the biogeochemical properties in a marine ecosystem

We present a new stochastic model, based on a 0-dimensional version of the well known biogeochemical flux model (BFM), which allows to take into account the temperature random fluctuations present in natural systems and therefore to describe more realistically the dynamics of real marine ecosystems. The study presents a detailed analysis of the effects of randomly varying temperature on the lower trophic levels of the food web and ocean biogeochemical processes. More in detail, the temperature is described as a stochastic process driven by an additive self-correlated Gaussian noise. Varying both correlation time and intensity of the noise source, the predominance of different plankton populations is observed, with regimes shifted towards the coexistence or the exclusion of some populations. Finally a Fourier analysis carried out on the time series of the plankton populations shows how the ecosystem responds to the seasonal driving for different values of the noise intensity.

Dynamics of quantum discord of two coupled spin-1/2 subjected to time-dependent magnetic fields

We describe the dynamics of quantum discord of two interacting spin-1/2 subjected to controllable time-dependent magnetic fields. The exact time evolution of discord is given for various input mixed states consisting of classical mixtures of two Bell states. The quantum discord manifests a complex oscillatory behaviour in time and is compared with that of quantum entanglement, measured by concurrence. The interplay of the action of the time-dependent magnetic fields and the spin-coupling mechanism in the occurrence and evolution of quantum correlations is examined in detail.

New approach to describe two coupled spins in a variable magnetic field

We propose a method to describe the evolution of two spins coupled by hyperfine interaction in an external time-dependent magnetic field. We apply the approach to the case of hyperfine interaction with axial symmetry, which can be solved exactly in a constant, appropriately oriented magnetic field. In order to treat the nonstationary dynamical problem, we modify the time-dependent Schrödinger equation through a change of representation that, by exploiting an instantaneous (adiabatic) basis makes the time-dependent Hamiltonian diagonal at any time instant. The solution of the transformed time-dependent Schrödinger in the form of chronologically ordered exponents with transparent pre-exponential coefficients is reported. This solution is highly simplified when an adiabatically varying magnetic field perturbs the system. The approach here proposed may be used for the perturbative treatment of other dynamical problems with no exact solution.

Quantum Correlation Dynamics in Controlled Two-Coupled-Qubit Systems

We study and compare the time evolutions of concurrence and quantum discord in a driven system of two interacting qubits prepared in a generic Werner state. The~corresponding quantum dynamics is exactly treated and manifests the appearance and disappearance of entanglement. Our analytical treatment transparently unveils the physical reasons for the occurrence of such a phenomenon, relating it to the dynamical invariance of the $X$ structure of the initial state. The~quantum correlations which asymptotically emerge in the system are investigated in detail in terms of the time evolution of the fidelity of the initial Werner state.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and dipole-dipole interactions affect coupling-based Landau-Majorana-Stückelberg-Zener transitions

It has been theoretically demonstrated that two spins (qubits or qutrits), coupled by exchange interaction only, undergo a coupling-based joint Landau-Majorana-Stückelberg-Zener (LMSZ) transition when a linear ramp acts upon one of the two spins. Such a transition, under appropriate conditions on the parameters, drives the two-spin system toward a maximally entangled state. In this paper, effects on the quantum dynamics of the two qudits, stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and dipole-dipole (d-d) interactions, are investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. The enriched Hamiltonian model of the two spins, shares with the previous microscopic one the same C2-symmetry which once more brings about an exact treatment of the new quantum dynamical problem. This paper transparently reveals that the DM and d-d interactions generate independent, enhancing or hindering, modifications in the dynamical behaviour predicted for the two spins coupled exclusively by the exchange interaction. It is worthy noticing that, on the basis of the theory here developed, the measurement of the time evolution of the magnetization in a controlled LMSZ scenario, can furnish information on the relative weights of the three kinds of couplings describing the spin system. This possibility is very important since it allows in principle to legitimate the choice of the microscopic model to be adopted in a given physical scenario.

Proposal of a computational approach for simulating thermal bosonic fields in phase space

When a quantum field is in contact with a thermal bath, the vacuum state of the field may be generalized to a thermal vacuum state, which takes into account the thermal noise. In thermo field dynamics, this is realized by doubling the dimensionality of the Fock space of the system. Interestingly, the representation of thermal noise by means of an augmented space is also found in a distinctly different approach based on the Wigner transform of both the field operators and density matrix, which we pursue here. Specifically, the thermal noise is introduced by augmenting the classical-like Wigner phase space by means of Nosé-Hoover chain thermostats, which can be readily simulated on a computer. In this paper, we illustrate how this may be achieved and discuss how non-equilibrium quantum thermal distributions of the field modes can be numerically simulated.

Quasi-Lie Brackets and the Breaking of Time-Translation Symmetry for Quantum Systems Embedded in Classical Baths

Many open quantum systems encountered in both natural and synthetic situations are embedded in classical-like baths. Often, the bath degrees of freedom may be represented in terms of canonically conjugate coordinates, but in some cases they may require a non-canonical or non-Hamiltonian representation. Herein, we review an approach to the dynamics and statistical mechanics of quantum subsystems embedded in either non-canonical or non-Hamiltonian classical-like baths which is based on operator-valued quasi-probability functions. These functions typically evolve through the action of quasi-Lie brackets and their associated Quantum-Classical Liouville Equations.

Analytic estimation of transition between instantaneous eigenstates of quantum two-level system

Transition amplitudes between instantaneous eigenstates of quantum two-level system are evaluated analytically on the basis of a new parametrization of its evolution operator, which has recently been proposed to construct exact solutions. In particular, they are estimated when the Hamiltonian varies infinitesimally slowly. The results, not only confirm the adiabatic theorem in the adiabatic limit, but also bring us with an analytic estimation of the adiabatic approximation. The condition under which no transition between different instantaneous eigenstates is allowed is also clarified.
