Modeling Newtonian noise of acoustic origin in the Virgo gravitational wave detector

Since the first gravitational-wave (GW) detection of September 14th 2015 and with hundreds of gravitational-wave sources identified by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network, GW have produced many important results in astrophysics and fundamental physics. Along with planned new data takings, current detectors will be upgraded and new project, such as Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer, are under study. Among noises limiting low frequency sensitivity, vibro-acoustic noises are particularly important. In this work, we focus on the gravity gradient noise (also called Newtonian noise) of acoustic origin, which refers to the small fluctuations in the gravity field resulting from the acoustic pressure field present in the experimental areas of the detector. The induced noise is quantified in an original way, using a detailed nu- merical acoustic model of the experimental room, when the pressure field is excited by the air conditioning system. The method is used for Virgo, but it can be easily extended for future detectors and used to guide the design of caverns and experimental areas.

Reducing the Virgo site infrastructure noise in preparation of the O4 observing run

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems serving the experimental halls of the Virgo gravitational wave interferometer generate low-frequency noise - namely below 100 Hz - of seismic, acoustic, and electromagnetic origin. Such disturbances have repeatedly affected the interferometer sensitivity throughout its operational history, with particularly notable impacts during the third observing run. In preparation for the fourth run, a comprehensive investigation was carried out to identify the most critical noise sources within this infrastructure and to trace their transmission paths into the experimental areas. This manuscript presents the methodology and results of the noise characterization campaign, together with the design, implementation and assessment of targeted mitigation measures. The technical solutions adopted, along with the operational best practices developed, provide valuable guidance for the design of low-noise environments in future gravitational-wave observatories.

Thermal Control of a Dual Mode Parametric Sapphire Transducer

We propose a method to control the thermal stability of a sapphire dielectric transducer made with two dielectric disks separated by a thin gap and resonating in the whispering gallery (WG) modes of the electromagnetic field. The simultaneous measurement of the frequencies of both a WGH mode and a WGE mode allows one to discriminate the frequency shifts due to gap variations from those due to temperature instability. A simple model, valid in quasi equilibrium conditions, describes the frequency shift of the two modes in terms of four tuning parameters. A procedure for the direct measurement of them is presented.
