Efficient Eigenstate Preparation in an Integrable Model with Hilbert Space Fragmentation

We consider the preparation of all the eigenstates of spin chains using quantum circuits. It is known that generic eigenstates of free-fermionic spin chains can be prepared with circuits whose depth grows only polynomially with the length of the chain and the number of particles. We show that the polynomial growth is also achievable for selected interacting models where the interaction between the particles is sufficiently simple. Our working example is the folded XXZ model, an integrable spin chain that exhibits Hilbert space fragmentation. We present the explicit quantum circuits that prepare arbitrary eigenstates of this model on an open chain efficiently. We perform error-mitigated noisy simulations with circuits of up to 13 qubits and different connectivities between qubits, achieving a relative error below 5%. As a byproduct, we extend a recent reformulation of the Bethe ansatz as a quantum circuit from closed to open boundary conditions.

Bethe Ansatz, Quantum Circuits, and the F-basis

The Bethe Ansatz is a method for constructing exact eigenstates of quantum-integrable spin chains. Recently, deterministic quantum algorithms, referred to as "algebraic Bethe circuits", have been developed to prepare Bethe states for the spin-1/2 XXZ model. These circuits represent a unitary formulation of the standard algebraic Bethe Ansatz, expressed using matrix-product states that act on both the spin chain and an auxiliary space. In this work, we systematize these previous results, and show that algebraic Bethe circuits can be derived by a change of basis in the auxiliary space. The new basis, identical to the "F-basis" known from the theory of quantum-integrable models, generates the linear superposition of plane waves that is characteristic of the coordinate Bethe Ansatz. We explain this connection, highlighting that certain properties of the F-basis (namely, the exchange symmetry of the spins) are crucial for the construction of algebraic Bethe circuits. We demonstrate our approach by presenting new quantum circuits for the inhomogeneous spin-1/2 XXZ model.

The Bethe Ansatz as a Quantum Circuit

The Bethe ansatz represents an analytical method enabling the exact solution of numerous models in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. When a global symmetry is present, the trial wavefunctions of the Bethe ansatz consist of plane wave superpositions. Previously, it has been shown that the Bethe ansatz can be recast as a deterministic quantum circuit. An analytical derivation of the quantum gates that form the circuit was lacking however. Here we present a comprehensive study of the transformation that brings the Bethe ansatz into a quantum circuit, which leads us to determine the analytical expression of the circuit gates. As a crucial step of the derivation, we present a simple set of diagrammatic rules that define a novel Matrix Product State network building Bethe wavefunctions. Remarkably, this provides a new perspective on the equivalence between the coordinate and algebraic versions of the Bethe ansatz.

Infinite-dimensional R-matrices for the relativistic scattering of massless modes on $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{AdS}_2}$

We construct infinite-dimensional R-matrices that generalise the relativistic scattering of massless modes with the same chirality on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ near the Berestein-Maldacena-Nastase vacuum. We show that the infrared limit of the R-matrices reproduces finite-dimensional scattering of massless modes on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$, from which the R-matrices borrow modified braiding unitary. We also prove that the R-matrices enjoy an infinite-dimensional symmetry superalgebra that embeds that of $\mathrm{AdS}_2$. Finally, we verify that the R-matrices are also invariant under crossing symmetry.

Spinning strings: $\lambda$-deformation and non-Abelian T-dual limit

The simplest example of the $\lambda$-deformation connects the SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten model with the non-Abelian T-dual (NATD) of the SU(2) principal chiral model. We analyze spinning strings with one spin propagating through the $\lambda$-deformation of the target space of the interpolation. We show that the situation apart from the NATD limit parallels the undeformed case. We demonstrate that regular spinning strings are either folded or circular, and that nearly degenerate spinning strings are either nearly point-like, fast, or slow. The effects of the $\lambda$-deformation are both the overall increment of the energy of spinning strings and the enlargement of the gap between the energies of folded and circular strings. In the NATD limit, we prove that circular strings disappear and that fast strings realize the dispersion relation of Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov strings.

The $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten spin-chain $\sigma$-model

The $\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model realises bosonic-string theory in $\textrm{AdS}_{3}$ with pure Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux. We construct an effective action in the semi-classical limit of the model, which corresponds to a $\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ spin-chain $\sigma$-model. We adopt two complementary points of view. Firstly, we consider the classical action. We identify fast and slow target-space coordinates. We impose a gauge-fixing condition to the former. By expanding the gauge-fixed action in an effective coupling, we obtain the effective action for the slow coordinates. Secondly, we consider the spin chain of the model. We postulate a set of coherent states to express a transition amplitude in the spin chain as a path integral. We observe that the temporal interval is discretised in terms of the step length of the spatial interval. This relationship implies that the Landau-Lifshitz limit of the spin chain involves both intervals. The limit yields a semi-classical path integral over coherent states, wherein we identify the effective action again.

Double Yang-Baxter deformation of spinning strings

We study the reduction of classical strings rotating in the deformed three-sphere truncation of the double Yang-Baxter deformation of the $\hbox{AdS}_3 \times \hbox{S}^3 \times \hbox{T}^4$ background to an integrable mechanical model. The use of the generalized spinning-string ansatz leads to an integrable deformation of the Neumann-Rosochatius system. Integrability of this system follows from the fact that the usual constraints for the Uhlenbeck constants apply to any deformation that respects the isometric coordinates of the three-sphere. We construct solutions to the system in terms of the underlying ellipsoidal coordinate. The solutions depend on the domain of the deformation parameters and the reality conditions of the roots of a fourth order polynomial. We obtain constant-radii, giant-magnon and trigonometric solutions when the roots degenerate, and analyze the possible solutions in the undeformed limit. In the case where the deformation parameters are purely imaginary and the polynomial involves two complex-conjugated roots, we find a new class of solutions. The new class is connected with twofold giant-magnon solutions in the degenerate limit of infinite period.

The $SU(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten spin chain sigma model

Classical strings propagating in $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}\times T^{4}$ supported with Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux are described by a Wess-Zumino-Witten model. In this note, we study the emergence of their semiclassical $SU(2)$ spectrally flowed sectors as the Landau-Lifshitz limit of the underlying quantum spin chain. We consider the propagator in the coherent state picture, and find that the time interval is discretized proportionally to the lattice spacing. In the Landau-Lifshitz limit, where both time and space become continuous, we derive a path integral representation of the propagator for each spectrally flowed sector. We prove that the arbitrariness of the global phase of coherent states is mapped to the gauge freedom of the $B$-field in the classical action. We show that higher order corrections in the Landau-Lifshitz limit are suppressed by inverse powers of the 't Hooft coupling.

Quantum corrections to minimal surfaces with mixed three-form flux

We obtain the ratio of semiclassical partition functions for the extension under mixed flux of the minimal surfaces subtending a circumference and a line in Euclidean $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}\times T^{4}$. We reduce the problem to the computation of a set of functional determinants. If the Ramond-Ramond flux does not vanish, we find that the contribution of the $B$-field is comprised in the conformal anomaly. In this case, we successively apply the Gel'fand-Yaglom method and the Abel-Plana formula to the flat-measure determinants. To cancel the resultant infrared divergences, we shift the regularization of the sum over half-integers depending on whether it corresponds to massive or massless fermionic modes. We show that the result is compatible with the zeta-function regularization approach. In the limit of pure Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux we argue that the computation trivializes. We extend the reasoning to other surfaces with the same behavior in this regime.

Minimal surfaces with mixed three-form flux

We study minimal area world sheets ending on two concentric circumferences on the boundary of Euclidean $AdS_{3}$ with mixed R-R and NS-NS three-form fluxes. We solve the problem by reducing the system to a one-dimensional integrable model. We find that the NS-NS flux term either brings the surface near to the boundary or separates the circumferences. In the limit of pure NS-NS flux the solution adheres to the boundary in the former case and the outer radius diverges in the latter. We further construct the underlying elliptic spectral curve, which allows us to analyze the deformation of other related minimal surfaces. We show that in the regime of pure NS-NS flux the elliptic curve degenerates.

One-loop quantization of rigid spinning strings in $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ with mixed flux

We compute the one-loop correction to the classical dispersion relation of rigid closed spinning strings with two equal angular momenta in the $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ background supported with a mixture of R-R and NS-NS three-form fluxes. This analysis is extended to the case of two arbitrary angular momenta in the pure NS-NS limit. We perform this computation by means of two different methods. The first method relies on the Euler-Lagrange equations for the quadratic fluctuations around the classical solution, while the second one exploits the underlying integrability of the problem through the finite-gap equations. We find that the one-loop correction vanishes in the pure NS-NS limit.

Pulsating strings with mixed three-form flux

Circular strings pulsating in $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ with mixed R-R and NS-NS three-form fluxes can be described by an integrable deformation of the one-dimensional Neumann-Rosochatius mechanical model. In this article we find a general class of pulsating solutions to this integrable system that can be expressed in terms of elliptic functions. In the limit of strings moving in $AdS_{3}$ with pure NS-NS three-form flux, where the action reduces to the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ WZW model, we find agreement with the analysis of the classical solutions of the system performed using spectral flow by Maldacena and Ooguri. We use our elliptic solutions in $AdS_{3}$ to extend the dispersion relation beyond the limit of pure NS-NS flux.

Prospects for natural SUSY

As we anticipate the first results of the 2016 run, we assess the discovery potential of the LHC to `natural supersymmetry'. To begin with, we explore the region of the model parameter space that can be excluded with various centre-of-mass energies (13 TeV and 14 TeV) and different luminosities (20 fb$^{-1}$, 100 fb$^{-1}$, 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3000 fb$^{-1}$). We find that the bounds at 95% CL on stops vary from $m_{\tilde{t}_1}\gtrsim 900$ GeV expected this summer to $m_{\tilde{t}_1}\gtrsim 1500$ GeV at the end of the high luminosity run, while gluino bounds are expected to range from $m_{\tilde{g}}\gtrsim 1700$ GeV to $m_{\tilde{g}}\gtrsim 2500$ GeV over the same time period. However, more pessimistically we find that if no signal begins to appear this summer, only a very small region of parameter space can be discovered with 5-$σ$ significance. For this conclusion to change, we find that both theoretical and systematic uncertainties will need to be significantly reduced.
