Birational boundedness of stable families

We prove that normal projective stable families of maximal variation, of fixed dimension, and with bounded adjoint volume are birationally bounded. This is a consequence of a substantially stronger statement, formulated a priori independently of stable families: algebraically integrable foliations of fixed dimension and bounded adjoint volume are log birationally bounded. In this way, the birational geometry of foliations provides a systematic framework for approaching classical boundedness problems for fibrations. A key input is our proof of M\textsuperscript{c}Kernan's ACC conjecture for interpolated log canonical thresholds of algebraically integrable foliations. This may be viewed as the foliated analogue of Shokurov's ACC conjecture for log canonical thresholds, proved in the classical setting by Hacon--M\textsuperscript{c}Kernan--Xu. As applications, we establish two boundedness criteria for Fano algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures: Birkar's criterion for exceptional Fanos, and Jiang's criterion for Fanos for which both Tian's $\alpha$-invariant and the anti-canonical volume are bounded away from zero. We also obtain several results on the birational geometry of algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures, including lower bounds for adjoint volumes, boundedness of automorphism groups, and ACC theorems for pseudo-effective thresholds, $\mathbb{R}$-complementary thresholds, and the Fano spectrum.

Deformations of fibered Calabi--Yau varieties

Koll\'{a}r showed that small deformations of elliptically fibered smooth $K$-torsion varieties with $H^2(X,\mathcal{O}_X)=0$ remain elliptically fibered. We extend this result to any fibered smooth $K$-torsion variety $X$ with $H^2(X,\mathcal{O}_X)=0$, using Hodge theoretic techniques and the $T^1$-lifting criterion of Kawamata--Ran. More generally, our strategy implies that even without the cohomological assumption, small deformations of a semiample line bundle on a smooth $K$-torsion variety remain semiample up to homological equivalence.

Characterization of products of projective spaces via nef complexity

We define the nef complexity of a projective variety $X$. This invariant compares $\dim X+\rho(X)$ with the sum of the coefficients of nef partitions of $-K_X$. We prove that the nef complexity is non-negative and it is zero precisely for products of projective spaces. We classify smooth Fano threefolds with nef complexity at most one. In a similar vein, we prove Mukai's conjecture for smooth Fano varieties for which every extremal contraction is of fiber type and study smooth images of products of projective spaces. Along the way, we answer positively a question of J. Starr regarding the nef cone of smooth Fano varieties.

On moduli of foliated surfaces

We present a definition of stable family of foliations and show that the corresponding moduli functor for foliated surfaces is representable by a Deligne-Mumford stack.

Variation of algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures

Given a canonical algebraically integrable foliation on a klt projective variety, we study the variation of the ample models of the associated adjoint foliated structures with respect to the parameter. When the foliation is of general type, we show the finiteness of ample models if the parameter is sufficiently close to $1$. When the ambient variety is of general type, we show the finiteness of ample models for all parameters. A key ingredient in our proof is the equivalence between the existence of minimal models and the termination of MMP with scaling for algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures.

Moduli of surfaces fibered in log Calabi-Yau pairs

We study the moduli spaces of surface pairs $(X,D)$ admitting a log Calabi--Yau fibration $(X,D) \to C$. We develop a series of results on stable reduction and apply them to give an explicit description of the boundary of the KSBA compactification. Three interesting cases where our results apply are: (1) divisors on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bidegree $(2n,m)$; (2) K3 surfaces which map $2:1$ to $\mathbb{F}_n$, with $X=\mathbb{F}_n$ and $D$ the ramification locus, or (3) elliptic surfaces with either a section or a bisection. The main tools employed are stable quasimaps, the canonical bundle formula, and the minimal model program.

Boundedness of some fibered K-trivial varieties

We prove that irreducible Calabi-Yau varieties of a fixed dimension, admitting a fibration by abelian varieties or primitive symplectic varieties of a fixed analytic deformation class, are birationally bounded. We prove that there are only finitely many deformation classes of primitive symplectic varieties of a fixed dimension, admitting a Lagrangian fibration. We also show that fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds are bounded. Conditional on the generalized abundance or hyperk\"ahler SYZ conjecture, our results prove that there are only finitely many deformation classes of hyperk\"ahler varieties, of a fixed dimension, with $b_2 \geq 5$.

On finite generation and boundedness of adjoint foliated structures

We prove the existence of good minimal models for any klt algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structure of general type, and that Fano algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures with total minimal log discrepancies and parameters bounded away from zero form a bounded family. These results serve as the algebraically integrable foliation analogues of the finite generation of the canonical rings proved by Birkar-Cascini-Hacon-M\textsuperscript{c}Kernan, and the Borisov-Alexeev-Borisov conjecture on the boundedness of Fano varieties proved by Birkar, respectively. As an application, we prove that the ambient variety of any lc Fano algebraically integrable foliation is of Fano type, provided the ambient variety is potentially klt.

Minimal model program for algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures

For $\mathbb Q$-factorial klt algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures, we prove the cone theorem, the contraction theorem, and the existence of flips. Therefore, we deduce the existence of the minimal model program for such structures. We also prove the base-point-freeness theorem for such structures of general type and establish an adjunction formula and the existence of $\mathbb Q$-factorial quasi-dlt modifications for algebraically integrable adjoint foliated structures.

Boundedness of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds

We show that elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds form a bounded family. We also show that the same result holds for minimal terminal threefolds of Kodaira dimension 2, upon fixing the rate of growth of pluricanonical forms and the degree of a multisection of the Iitaka fibration. Both of these hypotheses are necessary to prove the boundedness of such a family.

A geometric characterization of toric singularities

Given a projective contraction $\pi \colon X\rightarrow Z$ and a log canonical pair $(X, B)$ such that $-(K_X+B)$ is nef over a neighborhood of a closed point $z\in Z$, one can define an invariant, the complexity of $(X, B)$ over $z \in Z$, comparing the dimension of $X$ and the relative Picard number of $X/Z$ with the sum of the coefficients of those components of $B$ intersecting the fibre over $z$. We prove that the complexity of $(X,B)$ over $z\in Z$ is non-negative and that when it is zero then $(X,\lfloor B \rfloor) \rightarrow Z$ is formally isomorphic to a morphism of toric varieties around $z\in Z$. In particular, considering the case when $\pi$ is the identity morphism, we get a geometric characterization of singularities that are formally isomorphic to toric singularities. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture due to Shokurov.

Effective generation for foliated surfaces: results and applications

We explore the birational structure and invariants of a foliated surface $(X, \mathcal F)$ in terms of the adjoint divisor $K_{\mathcal F}+\epsilon K_X$, $0< \epsilon \ll 1$. We then establish a bound on the automorphism group of an adjoint general type foliated surface $(X, \mathcal F)$, provide a bound on the degree of a general curve invariant by an algebraically integrable foliation on a surface and prove that the set of $\epsilon$-adjoint canonical models of foliations of general type and with fixed volume form a bounded family.

Rational curves and strictly nef divisors on Calabi--Yau threefolds

We give a criterion for a nef divisor $D$ to be semiample on a Calabi--Yau threefold $X$ when $D^3=0=c_2(X)\cdot D$ and $c_3(X)\neq 0$. As a direct consequence, we show that on such a variety $X$, if $D$ is strictly nef and $\nu(D)\neq 1$, then $D$ is ample; we also show that if there exists a nef non-ample divisor $D$ with $D\not\equiv 0$, then $X$ contains a rational curve when its topological Euler characteristic is not $0$.

Boundedness of elliptic Calabi-Yau varieties with a rational section

We show that for each fixed dimension $d\geq 2$, the set of $d$-dimensional klt elliptic varieties with numerically trivial canonical bundle is bounded up to isomorphism in codimension one, provided that the torsion index of the canonical class is bounded and the elliptic fibration admits a rational section. This case builds on an analogous boundedness result for the set of rationally connected log Calabi-Yau pairs with bounded torsion index. In dimension $3$, we prove the more general statement that the set of $\epsilon$-lc pairs $(X,B)$ with $-(K_X +B)$ nef and rationally connected $X$ is bounded up to isomorphism in codimension one.

On the connectedness principle and dual complexes for generalized pairs

Let $(X,B)$ be a pair, and let $f \colon X \rightarrow S$ be a contraction with $-(K_X + B)$ nef over $S$. A conjecture, known as the Shokurov-Koll\'{a}r connectedness principle, predicts that $f^{-1} (s) \cap \mathrm{Nklt}(X,B)$ has at most two connected components, where $s \in S$ is an arbitrary schematic point and $\mathrm{Nklt}(X,B)$ denotes the non-klt locus of $(X,B)$. In this work, we prove this conjecture, characterizing those cases in which $\mathrm{Nklt}(X,B)$ fails to be connected, and we extend these same results also to the category of generalized pairs. Finally, we apply these results and the techniques to the study of the dual complex for generalized log Calabi-Yau pairs, generalizing results of Koll\'{a}r-Xu and Nakamura.

The Jordan property for local fundamental groups

We show the Jordan property for regional fundamental groups of klt singularities of fixed dimension. Furthermore, we prove the existence of effective simultaneous index one covers for $n$-dimensional klt singularities. We give an application to the study of local class groups of klt singularities.

Invariance of Plurigenera and boundedness for Generalized Pairs

In this note, we survey some recent developments in birational geometry concerning the boundedness of algebraic varieties. We delineate a strategy to extend some of these results to the case of generalized pairs, first introduced by Birkar and Zhang, when the associated log canonical divisor is ample, and the volume is fixed. In this context, we show a version of deformation invariance of plurigenera for generalized pairs. We conclude by discussing an application to the boundedness of varieties of Kodaira dimension $\kappa(X)=\dim(X)-1$.

Local and global applications of the Minimal Model Program for co-rank one foliations on threefolds

We provide several applications of the minimal model program to the local and global study of co-rank one foliations on threefolds. Locally, we prove a singular variant of Malgrange's theorem, a classification of terminal foliation singularities and the existence of separatrices for log canonical singularities. Globally, we prove termination of flips, a connectedness theorem on lc centres, a non-vanshing theorem and some hyperbolicity properties of foliations.
