Moduli Stabilisation for ADD and the Dark Dimension Scenario

We provide a moduli stabilisation mechanism for realising anisotropic string compactifications with one or two large extra dimensions, corresponding to the ADD and Dark Dimension scenarios. This is achieved within the type IIB Large Volume Scenario, where an exponentially large Calabi-Yau volume in string units can naturally generate a parametrically low Kaluza-Klein scale. Anisotropy is realised by considering a Calabi-Yau threefold which is a K3 fibration over a $\mathbb{P}^1$ base. The volume of the 4D K3 fibre is stabilised at relatively small values by perturbative corrections to the effective action, in particular string loops and higher-derivative effects, leaving an exponentially large volume of the 2D $\mathbb{P}^1$ base. We argue that complex structure moduli stabilisation can dynamically deform the $\mathbb{P}^1$ base, corresponding to a Tyurin degeneration limit where the internal geometry effectively develops a single large 1D cycle. Within a unified description, the ADD case is instead recovered as a symmetric alternative limit. The potential can feature either a dS vacuum or a quintessence runaway, although in both cases some degree of tuning is required to match the observed cosmological constant scale. We also present an explicit Calabi-Yau orientifold example with consistent brane setup, tadpole cancellation and moduli stabilisation. We analyse the resulting moduli spectrum and associated phenomenological constraints, including supersymmetry breaking, cosmological moduli overproduction and fifth force bounds.

A class of half-BPS boundary conditions for $A_{K-1}$ circular quivers

We study a string-motivated class of $\tfrac12$-BPS boundary conditions for 4d $\mathcal N=2$ $A_{K-1}$ circular quiver gauge theories, engineered by D4-branes suspended between NS5-branes on a circle. For D4-branes ending on boundary D6-branes, a single-pole ansatz reduces the BPS equations to a rigid algebraic problem. We characterize the structure of its solutions, which exhibit a winding phenomenon with no analogue for linear quivers, and solve two cases explicitly in closed form. Supported by a brane-duality argument, we propose the maximal-winding solution as a candidate S-dual of the pure Neumann boundary condition.

D2-brane probes of non-toric cDV threefolds via monopole superpotentials

We develop a framework to construct worldvolume gauge theories on D2-branes probing compound Du Val (cDV) Calabi-Yau threefold singularities. By viewing these singularities as ADE surface fibrations over the complex $w$-plane, we encode their geometry in a Higgs field $\Phi(w)$. A D2-brane probe perceives $\Phi(w)$ as an $\mathcal{N}=2$ deformation of its 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ affine Dynkin quiver gauge theory via polynomial and monopole superpotential terms. By exploiting 3d mirror symmetry, we obtain an effective theory that correctly reproduces the quiver-collapsing mechanism known in the mathematical literature. We present several examples, including non-toric and non-resolvable cases.

Non-toric 5d SCFTs from Reid's Pagoda

We construct new families of non-toric 5d SCFTs via abelian orbifolds of the Reid Pagoda, including a surprising infinite family of rank-1 theories, that evade all known classifications. Using the McKay correspondence, we derive their BPS quivers and superpotentials. The hallmark of these theories is a novel sector we dub Pagoda matter, whose vacuum expectation values obstruct the Kaehler moduli. This mechanism freezes the gauge coupling to infinite value, precluding a weak-coupling limit and rendering the theories intrinsically strongly coupled. Finally, we interpret these results as 5d SCFTs deformed by non-constant flavor backgrounds.

Universal flops of length 1 and 2 from D2-branes at surface singularities

We study families of deformed ADE surfaces by probing them with a D2-brane in Type IIA string theory. The geometry of the total space $X$ of such a family can be encoded in a scalar field $\Phi$, which lives in the corresponding ADE algebra and depends on the deformation parameters. The superpotential of the probe three dimensional (3d) theory incorporates a term that depends on the field $\Phi$. By varying the parameters on which $\Phi$ depends, one generates a family of 3d theories whose moduli space always includes a geometric branch, isomorphic to the deformed surface. By fibering this geometric branch over the parameter space, the total space $X$ of the family of ADE surfaces is reconstructed. We explore various cases, including when $X$ is the universal flop of length $\ell=1,2$. The effective theory, obtained after the introduction of $\Phi$, provides valuable insights into the geometric features of $X$, such as the loci in parameter space where the fiber becomes singular and, more notably, the conditions under which this induces a singularity in the total space. By analyzing the monopole operators in the 3d theory, we determine the charges of certain M2-brane states arising in M-theory compactifications on $X$.

M-theory geometric engineering for rank-0 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories

M-theory geometric engineering on non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds (CY4) produces 3d theories with 4 supercharges. Carefully establishing a dictionary between the geometry of the CY4 and the QFT in the transverse directions remains, to a large extent, an unresolved challenge, complicated by subtleties arising from M5-brane instanton corrections. Such difficulties can be circumvented in the restricted and yet controlled setting offered by CY4 with terminal singularities, as they do not admit crepant resolutions with compact exceptional divisors. After a general review of their properties and partial classifications, we focus on a subclass of terminal CY4 constructed as deformed Du Val singularities, that admit crepant resolutions with at most exceptional 2-cycles. We extract the corresponding 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory descendant in an unambiguous fashion, as the absence of compact 4-cycles leaves no room for a choice of background $G_4$ flux. These turn out to be theories of chiral multiplets with no gauge group and at most abelian flavor factors: we argue that they serve as the simplest building blocks to substantiate a rigorous CY4/3d QFT geometric engineering mapping.

BCFT One-point Functions of Coulomb Branch Operators

We show that supersymmetry can be used to compute the BCFT one-point function coefficients for chiral primary operators, in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS boundary conditions. The main ingredient is the hemisphere partition function, with the boundary condition on the equatorial $S^3$. A supersymmetric Ward identity relates derivatives with respect to the chiral coupling constants to the insertion of the primaries at the pole of the hemisphere. Exact results for the one-point functions can be then obtained in terms of the localization matrix model. We discuss in detail the example of the super Maxwell theory in the bulk, interacting with 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs on the boundary. In particular we derive the action of the SL(2,$\mathbb{Z}$) duality on the one-point functions.

5d Higgs Branches from M-theory on quasi-homogeneous cDV threefold singularities

We classify rank zero 5d SCFTs geometrically engineered from M-theory on quasi-homogeneous compound Du Val isolated threefold singularities. For all such theories, we characterize the Higgs Branch, by computing the dimension, the continuous and discrete symmetry groups, as well as more refined details such as the charges of the hypermultiplets under these groups. We derive these data by means of a gauge-theoretic method, that we have recently introduced, based on establishing a correspondence between an adjoint Higgs field and the M-theory geometry. As a byproduct, this further allows us to construct several T-brane backgrounds, that yield inequivalent 5d spectra but are associated with the same geometry.

A Database of Calabi-Yau Orientifolds and the Size of D3-Tadpoles

The classification of 4D reflexive polytopes by Kreuzer and Skarke allows for a systematic construction of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces as fine, regular, star triangulations (FRSTs). Until now, the vastness of this geometric landscape remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we construct Calabi-Yau orientifolds from holomorphic reflection involutions of such hypersurfaces with Hodge numbers $h^{1,1}\leq 12$. In particular, we compute orientifold configurations for all favourable FRSTs for $h^{1,1}\leq 7$, while randomly sampling triangulations for each pair of Hodge numbers up to $h^{1,1}=12$. We find explicit string compactifications on these orientifolded Calabi-Yaus for which the D3-charge contribution coming from O$p$-planes grows linearly with the number of complex structure and K\"ahler moduli. We further consider non-local D7-tadpole cancellation through Whitney branes. We argue that this leads to a significant enhancement of the total D3-tadpole as compared to conventional $\mathrm{SO}(8)$ stacks with $(4+4)$ D7-branes on top of O7-planes. In particular, before turning-on worldvolume fluxes, we find that the largest D3-tadpole in this class occurs for Calabi-Yau threefolds with $(h^{1,1}_{+},h^{1,2}_{-})=(11,491)$ with D3-brane charges $|Q_{\text{D3}}|=504$ for the local D7 case and $|Q_{\text{D3}}|=6,664$ for the non-local Whitney branes case, which appears to be large enough to cancel tadpoles and allow fluxes to stabilise all complex structure moduli. Flops of any length, Gopakumar-Vafa invariants, and 5d Higgs Branches

The conifold is a basic example of a noncompact Calabi-Yau threefold that admits a simple flop, and in M-theory, gives rise to a 5d hypermultiplet at low energies, realized by an M2-brane wrapped on the vanishing sphere. We develop a novel gauge-theoretic method to construct new classes of examples that generalize the simple flop to so-called length l=1,...,6. The method allows us to naturally read off the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. Although they share similar properties to the beloved conifold, these threefolds are expected to admit M2-bound states of higher degree. We demonstrate this through our computations of the GV invariants. Furthermore we fully characterize the associated Higgs branches by computing their dimensions and flavor groups. With our techniques we extract more refined data such as the charges of the hypers under the flavor group.

The Standard Model Quiver in de Sitter String Compactifications

We argue that the Standard Model quiver can be embedded into compact Calabi-Yau geometries through orientifolded D3-branes at del Pezzo singularities $\mathrm{dP}_n$ with $n\geq 5$ in a framework including moduli stabilisation. To illustrate our approach, we explicitly construct a local $\mathrm{dP}_{5}$ model via a combination of Higgsing and orientifolding. This procedure reduces the original $\mathrm{dP}_{5}$ quiver gauge theory to the Left-Right symmetric model with three families of quarks and leptons as well as a Higgs sector to further break the symmetries to the Standard Model gauge group. We embed this local model in a globally consistent Calabi-Yau flux compactification with tadpole and Freed-Witten anomaly cancellations. The model features closed string moduli stabilisation with a de Sitter minimum from T-branes, supersymmetry broken by the K\"ahler moduli, and the MSSM as the low energy spectrum. We further discuss phenomenological and cosmological implications of this construction.

Systematics of the $\alpha'$ Expansion in F-Theory

Extracting reliable low-energy information from string compactifications notoriously requires a detailed understanding of the UV sensitivity of the corresponding effective field theories. Despite past efforts in computing perturbative string corrections to the tree-level action, neither a systematic approach nor a unified framework has emerged yet. We make progress in this direction, focusing on the moduli dependence of perturbative corrections to the 4D scalar potential of type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications. We proceed by employing two strategies. First, we use two rescaling symmetries of type IIB string theory to infer the dependence of any perturbative correction on both the dilaton and the Calabi-Yau volume. Second, we use F/M-theory duality to conclude that KK reductions on elliptically-fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds of the M-theory action at any order in the derivative expansion can only generate $(\alpha')^{\rm even}$ corrections to the 4D scalar potential, which, moreover, all vanish for trivial fibrations. We finally give evidence that $(\alpha')^{\rm odd}$ effects arise from integrating out KK and winding modes on the elliptic fibration and argue that the leading no-scale breaking effects at string tree-level arise from $(\alpha')^3$ effects, modulo potential logarithmic corrections.

Higgs branches of 5d rank-zero theories from geometry

We study the Higgs branches of five-dimensional N=1 rank-zero theories obtained from M-theory on two classes non-toric non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds: Reid's pagodas, and Laufer's examples. Our approach consists in reducing to IIA with D6-branes and O6-planes, and computing the open-string spectra giving rise to hypermultiplets. Starting with the seven-dimensional worldvolume theories, we switch on T-brane backgrounds to give rise to bound states with angles. We observe that the resulting partially Higgsed 5d theories have discrete gauge groups, from which we readily deduce the geometry of the Higgs branches as orbifolds of quaternionic varieties.

Genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants from open strings

We propose a new way to compute the genus zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for two families of non-toric non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds that admit simple flops: Reid's Pagodas, and Laufer's examples. We exploit the duality between M-theory on these threefolds, and IIA string theory with D6-branes and O6-planes. From this perspective, the GV invariants are detected as five-dimensional open string zero modes. We propose a definition for genus zero GV invariants for threefolds that do not admit small crepant resolutions. We find that in most cases, non-geometric T-brane data is required in order to fully specify the invariants.

On de Sitter String Vacua from Anti-D3-Branes in the Large Volume Scenario

We consider de Sitter vacua realised in concrete type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications with an anti D3-brane at the tip of a warped throat of Klebanov-Strassler type. The K\"ahler moduli are stabilised together with the complex structure modulus of the warped throat. The volume is exponentially large as in the large volume scenario (LVS). We analyse the conditions on the parameters of the EFT such that they are in the region of validity of our approximations, there are no runaway problems and the vacua satisfy all consistency constraints, such as tadpole cancellation. We illustrate our results with an explicit Calabi-Yau orientifold with two K\"ahler moduli and one antibrane on top of an O3-plane in a warped throat, that has the goldstino as its only massless state. The moduli are stabilised with $g_s\sim 0.2$ and volume $\mathcal{V}\sim 10^4$ in string units, justifying the approximation used to derive the corresponding EFT. Although the model lacks chiral matter, it is presented as a proof of concept, chosen to be the simplest realisation of antibrane uplift.

$G_4$ Flux, Algebraic Cycles and Complex Structure Moduli Stabilization

We construct $G_4$ fluxes that stabilize all of the 426 complex structure moduli of the sextic Calabi-Yau fourfold at the Fermat point. Studying flux stabilization usually requires solving Picard-Fuchs equations, which becomes unfeasible for models with many moduli. Here, we instead start by considering a specific point in the complex structure moduli space, and look for a flux that fixes us there. We show how to construct such fluxes by using algebraic cycles and analyze flat directions. This is discussed in detail for the sextic Calabi-Yau fourfold at the Fermat point, and we observe that there appears to be tension between M2-tadpole cancellation and the requirement of stabilizing all moduli. Finally, we apply our results to show that even though symmetric fluxes allow to automatically solve most of the F-term equations, they typically lead to flat directions.

A string theory realization of special unitary quivers in 3 dimensions

We propose a string theory realization of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories with special unitary gauge groups. This is most easily understood in type IIA string theory with D4-branes wrapped on holomorphic curves in local K3's, by invoking the St\"uckelberg mechanism. From the type IIB perspective, this is understood as simply compactifying the familiar Hanany-Witten (HW) constructions on a $T^3$. The mirror symmetry duals are easily derived. We illustrate this with various examples of mirror pairs.

The role of U(1)'s in 5d theories, Higgs branches, and geometry

We explore the Higgs branches of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ quiver gauge theories at finite coupling from the paradigm of M-theory on local Calabi-Yau threefolds described as $\mathbb{C}^\ast$-fibrations over local K3's. By properly counting local deformations of singularities, we find results compatible with unitary as opposed to special unitary gauge groups. We interpret these results by dualizing to both IIA on local K3's with D6-branes, and to IIB with 5-branes. Finally, we find that, by compactifying the $\mathbb{C}^\ast$-fibers to tori, a well-known St\"uckelberg mechanism eliminates Abelian factors, and provides missing Higgs branch moduli in a very interesting way. This is also explained from the dual IIA and IIB viewpoints.
