A Model for Bimodal Rates and Proportions

The beta model is the most important distribution for fitting data with the unit interval. However, the beta distribution is not suitable to model bimodal unit interval data. In this paper, we propose a bimodal beta distribution constructed by using an approach based on the alpha-skew-normal model. We discuss several properties of this distribution such as bimodality, real moments, entropy measures and identifiability. Furthermore, we propose a new regression model based on the proposed model and discuss residuals. Estimation is performed by maximum likelihood. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to evaluate the performances of these estimators in finite samples with a discussion of the results. An application is provided to show the modelling competence of the proposed distribution when the data sets show bimodality.

On the bimodal Gumbel model with application to environmental data

The Gumbel model is a very popular statistical model due to its wide applicability for instance in the course of certain survival, environmental, financial or reliability studies. In this work, we have introduced a bimodal generalization of the Gumbel distribution that can be an alternative to model bimodal data. We derive the analytical shapes of the corresponding probability density function and the hazard rate function and provide graphical illustrations. Furthermore, We have discussed the properties of this density such as mode, bimodality, moment generating function and moments. Our results were verified using the Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation method. The maximum likelihood method is used for parameters estimation. Finally, we also carry out an application to real data that demonstrates the usefulness of the proposed distribution.

On some properties of the bimodal normal distribution and its bivariate version

In this work, we derive some novel properties of the bimodal normal distribution. Some of its mathematical properties are examined. We provide a formal proof for the bimodality and assess identifiability. We then discuss the maximum likelihood estimates as well as the existence of these estimates, and also some asymptotic properties of the estimator of the parameter that controls the bimodality. A bivariate version of the BN distribution is derived and some characteristics such as covariance and correlation are analyzed. We study stationarity and ergodicity and a triangular array central limit theorem. Finally, a Monte Carlo study is carried out for evaluating the performance of the maximum likelihood estimates.

Absence of Replica Symmetry Breaking in the Random Field Mixed-Spin Ginzburg-Landau Model

In this paper, an extension of the random field Ginzburg-Landau model on the hypercubic lattice is considered by adding $p$-spin ($p\geqslant 2$) interactions coupled to general disorders. This new model is called the random field mixed-spin Ginzburg-Landau model. We proved that, in the infinite volume limit of this model, the variance of spin overlap vanishes.

On a length-biased Birnbaum-Saunders regression model applied to meteorological data

The length-biased Birnbaum-Saunders distribution is both useful and practical for environmental sciences. In this paper, we initially derive some new properties for the length-biased Birnbaum-Saunders distribution, showing that one of its parameters is the mode and that it is bimodal. We then introduce a new regression model based on this distribution. We implement use the maximum likelihood method for parameter estimation, approach interval estimation and consider three types of residuals. An elaborate Monte Carlo study is carried out for evaluating the performance of the likelihood-based estimates, the confidence intervals and the empirical distribution of the residuals. Finally, we illustrate the proposed regression model with the use of a real meteorological data set.

Maximum $\log_q$ Likelihood Estimation for Parameters of Weibull Distribution and Properties: Monte Carlo Simulation

The maximum ${\log}_q$ likelihood estimation method is a generalization of the known maximum $\log$ likelihood method to overcome the problem for modeling non-identical observations (inliers and outliers). The parameter $q$ is a tuning constant to manage the modeling capability. Weibull is a flexible and popular distribution for problems in engineering. In this study, this method is used to estimate the parameters of Weibull distribution when non-identical observations exist. Since the main idea is based on modeling capability of objective function $ρ(x;\boldsymbolθ)=\log_q\big[f(x;\boldsymbolθ)\big]$, we observe that the finiteness of score functions cannot play a role in the robust estimation for inliers. The properties of Weibull distribution are examined. In the numerical experiment, the parameters of Weibull distribution are estimated by $\log_q$ and its special form, $\log$, likelihood methods if the different designs of contamination into underlying Weibull distribution are applied. The optimization is performed via genetic algorithm. The modeling competence of $ρ(x;\boldsymbolθ)$ and insensitiveness to non-identical observations are observed by Monte Carlo simulation. The value of $q$ can be chosen by use of the mean squared error in simulation and the $p$-value of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistic used for evaluation of fitting competence. Thus, we can overcome the problem about determining of the value of $q$ for real data sets.

A Bimodal Weibull Distribution: Properties and Inference

Modeling is a challenging topic and using parametric models is an important stage to reach flexible function for modeling. Weibull distribution has two parameters which are shape $α$ and scale $β$. In this study, bimodality parameter is added and so bimodal Weibull distribution is proposed by using a quadratic transformation technique used to generate bimodal functions produced due to using the quadratic expression. The analytical simplicity of Weibull and quadratic form give an advantage to derive a bimodal Weibull via constructing normalizing constant. The characteristics and properties of the proposed distribution are examined to show its usability in modeling. After examination as first stage in modeling issue, it is appropriate to use bimodal Weibull for modeling data sets. Two estimation methods which are maximum $\log_q$ likelihood and its special form including objective functions $\log_q(f)$ and $\log(f)$ are used to estimate the parameters of shape, scale and bimodality parameters of the function. The second stage in modeling is overcome by using heuristic algorithm for optimization of function according to parameters due to fact that converging to global point of objective function is performed by heuristic algorithm based on the stochastic optimization. Real data sets are provided to show the modeling competence of the proposed distribution.

Sharp Phase Transition for the Random-Cluster Model with Summable External Magnetic Field

In this paper, we prove sharpness of the phase transition for the random-cluster model in summable positive external fields, with cluster weight q=2,3,..., on the hypercubic lattice. That is, there exists some nontrivial critical parameter that depends on the cluster weight and the external field, below which the model exhibits exponential decay and above which there exists almost surely an infinite cluster.

On a family of discrete log-symmetric distributions

The use of continuous probability distributions has been widespread in problems with purely discrete nature. In general, such distributions are not appropriate in this scenario. In this paper, we introduce a class of discrete and asymmetric distributions based on the family of continuous log-symmetric distributions. Some properties are discussed as well as estimation by the maximum likelihood method. A Monte Carlo simulation study is carried out to evaluate the performance of the estimators, and censored and uncensored data sets are used to illustrate the proposed methodology.

On a bimodal Birnbaum-Saunders distribution with applications to lifetime data

The Birnbaum-Saunders distribution is a flexible and useful model which has been used in several fields. In this paper, a new bimodal version of this distribution based on the alpha-skew-normal distribution is established. We discuss some of its mathematical and inferential properties. We consider likelihood-based methods to estimate the model parameters. We carry out a Monte Carlo simulation study to evaluate the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators. For illustrative purposes, three real data sets are analyzed. The results indicated that the proposed model outperformed some existing models in the literature, in special, a recent bimodal extension of the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution.

Log-symmetric regression models for correlated errors with an application to mortality data

Log-symmetric regression models are particularly useful when the response variable is continuous, strictly positive and asymmetric. In this paper, we proposed a class of log-symmetric regression models in the context of correlated errors. The proposed models provide a novel alternative to the existing log-symmetric regression models due to its flexibility in accommodating correlation. We discuss some properties, parameter estimation by the conditional maximum likelihood method and goodness of fit of the proposed model. We also provide expressions for the observed Fisher information matrix. A Monte Carlo simulation study is presented to evaluate the performance of the conditional maximum likelihood estimators. Finally, a full analysis of a real-world mortality data set is presented to illustrate the proposed approach.

On a bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders distribution parameterized by its means: features, reliability analysis and application

Birnbaum-Saunders models have been widely used to model positively skewed data. In this paper, we introduce a bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders distribution which has the means as parameters. We present some properties of the univariate and bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders models. We discuss the maximum likelihood and modified moment estimation of the model parameters and associated inference. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the maximum likelihood and modified moment estimators. The probability coverages of confidence intervals are also discussed. Finally, a real-world data analysis is carried out for illustrating the proposed model.

Graphical Representations for Ising and Potts Models in General External Fields

This work is concerned with the theory of Graphical Representation for the Ising and Potts Models over general lattices with non-translation invariant external field. We explicitly describe in terms of the Random Cluster Representation the distribution function and, consequently, the expected value of a single spin for the Ising and $q$-states Potts Models with general external fields. We also consider the Gibbs States for the Edwards-Sokal Representation of the Potts Model with non-translation invariant magnetic field and prove a version of the FKG Inequality for the so called General Random Cluster Model (GRC Model) with free and wired boundary conditions in the non-translation invariant case. Adding the amenability hypothesis on the lattice, we obtain the uniqueness of the infinite connected component and the quasilocality of the Gibbs Measures for the GRC Model with such general magnetic fields. As a final application of the theory developed, we show the uniqueness of the Gibbs Measures for the Ferromagnetic Ising Model with a positive power law decay magnetic field, as conjectured in [8].
