Quantum algorithm for the lattice Boltzmann method with applications on real quantum devices

We introduce a novel quantum algorithm for the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) based on the one-step simplified LBM. The structure of the algorithm allows for more flexibility in modelling different physics in contrast to earlier quantum algorithms for the LBM, while retaining computational efficiency in terms of the gate and qubit complexity. The new algorithm has potential for full end-to-end quantum utility especially for linear problems. We discuss the implementation of examples in linear acoustics, as well as a nonlinear Navier-Stokes problem that was solved on an IBM QPU in a hybrid simulation loop.

Efficient parallelization of quantum basis state shift

Basis state shift is central to many quantum algorithms, most notably the quantum walk. Efficient implementations are of major importance for achieving a quantum speedup for computational applications. We optimize the state shift algorithm by incorporating the shift in different directions in parallel. This provides a significant reduction in the depth of the quantum circuit in comparison to the currently known methods, giving a linear scaling in the number of gates versus working qubits in contrast to the quadratic scaling of the state-of-the-art method based on the quantum Fourier transform. For a one-dimensional array of size $2^n$ for $n > 4$, we derive the total number of $15n + 74$ two-qubit $CX$ gates in the parallel circuit, using a total of $2n-2$ qubits including an ancilla register for the decomposition of multi-controlled gates. We focus on the one-dimensional and periodic shift, but note that the method can be extended to more complex cases.

Topologically protected vortex knots and links

We propose a class of tangled vortex structures, tied from non-Abelian topological vortices, which are immune against decaying through local reconnections and strand crossings that are allowed by the system. We refer to such structures as being topologically protected. We then turn our attention to topological vortices classified by the quaternion group $Q_8$ ($Q_8$-colored links), which are realizable in systems consisting either of the biaxial nematic or the cyclic phase of a spin-2 Bose--Einstein condensate, or of biaxial nematic liquid crystal, and prove the existence of topologically protected $Q_8$-colored links. Remarkably, the strongest invariant we construct, the $Q$-invariant of $Q_8$-colored links, can be used to classify $Q_8$-colored links up to allowed local surgeries on the vortex cores.

Single-domain Bose condensate magnetometer achieves energy resolution per bandwidth below $\hbar$

We present a magnetic sensor with energy resolution per bandwidth $E_R < \hbar$. We show how a $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ single domain spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, detected by non-destructive Faraday-rotation probing, achieves single shot dc magnetic sensitivity of $72(8)~\mathrm{fT}$ measuring a volume $V= 1091(30)~μ\mathrm{m}^3$ for $3.5~\mathrm{s}$, and thus $E_R = 0.075(16)~\hbar$. We measure experimentally the condensate volume, spin coherence time, and readout noise, and use phase-space methods, backed by 3+1D mean-field simulations, to compute the spin noise. Contributions to the spin noise include one-body and three-body losses and shearing of the projection noise distribution, due to competition of ferromagnetic contact interactions and quadratic Zeeman shifts. Nonetheless, the fully-coherent nature of the single-domain, ultracold two-body interactions allows the system to escape the coherence vs.~density trade-off that imposes an energy resolution limit on traditional spin-precession sensors. We predict that other Bose-condensed alkalis, especially the antiferromagnetic $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$, can further improve the energy resolution of this method.

Vortices on demand in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a simple mechanism to produce vortices at any desired spatial locations in harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with multicomponent spin states coupled to external transverse and axial magnetic fields. The vortices appear at the spatial points where the spin-transverse field interaction vanishes and, depending on the multipolar magnetic field order, the vortices can acquire different predictable topological charges. We explicitly demonstrate our findings, both numerically and analytically, by analyzing a 2D BEC via the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for atomic systems with either two or three internal states. We further show that, by an spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism, vortices can appear in any spin component, unless symmetry is externally broken at the outset by an axial field. We suggest that this scenario may be tested using an ultracold gas of $^{87}$Rb occupying all three $F = 1$ states in an optical trap.
