Nonlinear Schrödinger equation in an exterior domain

We study the exact controllability of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the exterior $Ω=\mathbb{R}^n\setminusΘ$ of a non-trapping obstacle $Θ$, with internal controls supported outside a large ball, and the corresponding boundary control problem on $Ω_0=B_{R_0}\setminusΘ$ with Dirichlet controls acting only on the outer sphere $\partial B_{R_0}$. Using the local smoothing effect of Burq, Gérard and Tzvetkov [9], we prove observability inequalities for the linear Schrödinger equation in the whole scale of Sobolev spaces $H^σ_D(Ω)$, $σ\in[-2,2]$, associated with the Dirichlet Laplacian; they require only the non-trapping assumption (no star-shapedness of $Θ$), and their proofs use no normal boundary traces. Combined with Strichartz-type estimates and a perturbation argument, this yields local exact controllability in $H^1_0(Ω)$ and in $H^2(Ω)\cap H^1_0(Ω)$, in dimensions two and three, around the zero solution and, for internal controls and under a unique continuation assumption, around nontrivial trajectories. The same method applies to the quintic equation, which is energy-critical in dimension three. Several open problems are discussed.

Unique continuation for the periodic Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation

We prove unique continuation for the real periodic Benjamin--Bona--Mahony equation in the energy space: a solution that equals a constant on a nonempty space--time strip is that constant everywhere. In particular, Rosier's unique continuation conjecture [23] holds without any smallness or mean assumption. It even suffices to observe, at one point $x_0$ and for $t$ in an interval, the solution and the potential $ψ=(1-\partial_x^2)^{-1}(u+u^2/2)$ of its flux: $u(x_0,t)=C$ and $ψ(x_0,t)=C+C^2/2$ imply $u\equiv C$, and the second condition cannot be dropped when $C=-1$. The proof uses an exponentially weighted Hamiltonian of indefinite sign with a coercive dissipation identity, and it applies to every nonconstant real polynomial flux. Consequently, Rosier's stabilization results for two localized feedback laws and for a boundary feedback hold unconditionally, for arbitrary data. Stationary step profiles show that the theorem fails in $H^s$ for $0\leq s<1/2$. We also give a generating-series proof of single-point unique continuation for the linearized equation and discuss related control results.

A Nonhomogeneous Boundary-Value Problem For The Nonlinear KdV Equation on Star Graphs

This paper investigates an initial-boundary value problem for the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation on a finite equilateral star graph. We use the notion of $s$-compatibility, which extends the classical compatibility conditions to the coupled boundary conditions arising at the central vertex, inspired by the work of Bona, Sun, and Zhang [14]. By combining analytical estimates, fixed-point arguments, and nonlinear interpolation on suitable augmented spaces, we establish global well-posedness for the nonlinear problem in $H^s$, $0\leq s\leq3$. At the critical indices $s=1/2,3/2,5/2$, the admissible data are defined through constrained interpolation; away from these indices, they are characterized by the corresponding pointwise compatibility conditions. The nonlinear compatibility condition at the central vertex is handled by introducing an auxiliary variable, which allows the interpolation argument to be carried out on a pair of linear spaces.

Optimal Polynomial Stabilization of the Linearized Periodic Whitham--Boussinesq System

We study the stabilization of the linearized periodic Whitham--Boussinesq system on the one-dimensional torus. We establish the well-posedness of the conservative and damped dynamics in the natural energy space and describe the spectral structure of the conservative generator, whose frequencies exhibit sublinear growth of order $|k|^{1/2}$ at high frequency. We then prove strong stability of the damped semigroup and obtain a high-frequency resolvent estimate with linear growth in the spectral parameter. Under genuinely localized damping, a family of high-frequency quasimodes provides the matching lower bound and shows that this resolvent growth is optimal. By the Borichev--Tomilov theorem [5], we deduce a $t^{-1}$ decay rate for the semigroup on the domain of the generator, corresponding to a $t^{-2}$ decay rate for the energy. Under the same localization assumption, these polynomial decay rates are optimal.

Long-Time Dynamics of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov Equation

This manuscript presents the results of stabilization for the Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation, a two-dimensional Korteweg--de Vries-type equation. We provide rigorous proofs using two different approaches, showing that when a damping mechanism and an internal delay term (anti-damping) are introduced, the solutions of the Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation exhibit both local and global exponential stabilization properties. A significant contribution of our work is the determination of the optimal constant and the minimal time required to ensure exponential decay of the energy associated with this two-dimensional system.

An analysis of the entire functions associated with the operator of the KdV equation

It is well known that the controllability property of partial differential equations (PDEs) is closely linked to the proof of an observability inequality for the adjoint system, which, sometimes, involves analyzing a spectral problem associated with the PDE under consideration. In this work, we study a series of spectral issues that ensure the controllability of the renowned Korteweg-de Vries equation on a star-graph. This investigation reduces to determining when certain functions, associated with this spectral problem, are entire. The novelty here lies in presenting this detailed analysis in the context of a star graph structure.

A qualitative study of the generalized dispersive systems with time-delay: The unbounded case

We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the time-delayed higher-order dispersive nonlinear differential equation \begin{equation*} u_t(x,t)+Au(x,t) +λ_0(x) u(x,t)+λ(x) u(x,t-τ)=0 \end{equation*} where \begin{equation*} Au=(-1)^{j+1}\partial_x^{2j+1}u+(-1)^m\partial_x^{2m}u+ \frac{1}{p+1}\partial_xu^{p+1} \end{equation*} with $m\le j$ and $1\le p<2j$. Under suitable assumptions on the time delay coefficients, we prove that the system is exponentially stable if the coefficient of the delay term is bounded from below by a suitable positive constant, without any assumption on the sign of the coefficient of the undelayed feedback. Additionally, in the absence of delay, general results of stabilization are established in $H^s(\mathbb{R})$ for $s\in[0,2j+1]$. Our results generalize several previous theorems for the Korteweg-de Vries type delayed systems in the literature.

Stability of solitary waves for generalized $abcd$-Boussinesq system: The Hamiltonian case

The $abcd$-Boussinesq system is a model of two equations that can describe the propagation of small-amplitude long waves in both directions in the water of finite depth. Considering the Hamiltonian regimes, where the parameters $b$ and $d$ in the system satisfy $b=d>0$, small solutions in the energy space are globally defined. Then, a variational approach is applied to establish the existence and nonlinear stability of the set of solitary-wave solutions for the generalized $abcb$-Boussinesq system. The main point of the analysis is to show that the traveling-wave solutions of the generalized $abcb$-Boussinesq system converge to nontrivial solitary-wave solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. Moreover, if $p$ is the exponent of the nonlinear terms for the generalized $abcb$-Boussinesq system, then the nonlinear stability of the set of solitary-waves is obtained for any $p$ with $ 0 < p < p_0$ where $p_0 $ is strictly larger than $4$, while it has been known that the critical exponent for the stability of solitary waves of the generalized KdV equations is equal to $ 4$.

Observability of the linear Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation

We study the linear Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation with periodic boundary conditions. Employing some tools from the nonharmonic Fourier series we obtain several internal observability theorems. Then we prove various exact controllability and rapid uniform stabilization results by applying a duality principle and a general feedback construction. The method presented here introduces a new insight into the control of dispersive equations in two-dimensional cases and may be adapted to more general equations.

Controls insensitizing the norm of solution of a Schrödinger type system with mixed dispersion

The main goal of this manuscript is to prove the existence of insensitizing controls for the fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger equation with cubic nonlinearity. To obtain the main result we prove a null controllability property for a coupled fourth-order Schrödinger cascade type system with zero-order coupling which is equivalent to the insensitizing control problem. Precisely, employing a new Carleman estimate, we first obtain a null controllability result for the linearized system around zero, and then the null controllability for the nonlinear case is extended using an inverse mapping theorem.

Approximation theorem for the Kawahara operator and its application in control theory

Control properties of the Kawahara equation are considered when the equation is posed on an unbounded domain. Precisely, the paper's main results are related to an approximation theorem that ensures the exact (internal) controllability in $(0,+\infty)$. Following Rosier SIAM Simon (2000), the problem is reduced to prove an approximate theorem which is achieved thanks to a global Carleman estimate for the Kawahara operator.

Asymptotic behavior of Kawahara equation with memory effect

In this work, we are interested in a detailed qualitative analysis of the Kawahara equation, a model that has numerous physical motivations such as magneto-acoustic waves in a cold plasma and gravity waves on the surface of a heavy liquid. First, we design a feedback control law, which combines a damping component and another one of finite memory-type. Then, we are capable of proving that the problem is well-posed under a condition involving the feedback gains of the boundary control and the memory kernel. Afterwards, it is shown that the energy associated with this system exponentially decays.

Infinite memory effects on the stability of Biharmonic Schrödinger equation

This paper deals with the stabilization of the linear Biharmonic Schrödinger equation in an $n$-dimensional open bounded domain under Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions considering three infinite memory terms as damping mechanisms. We show that depending on the smoothness of initial data and the arbitrary growth at infinity of the kernel function, this class of solution goes to zero with a polynomial decay rate like $t^{-n}$ depending on assumptions about the kernel function associated with the infinite memory terms.

On the stability of the Kawahara equation with a distributed infinite memory

This article will deal with the stabilization problem for the higher-order dispersive system, commonly called the Kawahara equation. To do so, we introduce a damping mechanism via a distributed memory term in the equation to prove that the solutions of the Kawahara equation are exponentially stable, provided that specific assumptions on the memory kernel are fulfilled. This is possible thanks to the energy method that permits to provide a decay estimate of the system energy.

Control of Kawahara equation with overdetermination condition: The unbounded cases

In this manuscript we consider the internal control problem for the fifth order KdV type equation, commonly called the Kawahara equation, on unbounded domains. Precisely, under certain hypotheses over the initial and boundary data, we are able to prove that there exists an internal control input such that solutions of the Kawahara equation satisfies an integral overdetermination condition. This condition is satisfied when the domain of the Kawahara equation is posed in the real line, left half-line and right half-line. Moreover, we are also able to prove that there exists a minimal time in which the integral overdetermination condition is satisfied. Finally, we show a type of exact controllability associated with the "mass" of the Kawahara equation posed in the half-line.

The fractional Schrödinger equation on compact manifolds: Global controllability results

The goal of this work is to prove global controllability and stabilization properties for the fractional Schrödinger equation on $d$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary $(M,g)$. To prove our main results we use techniques of pseudo-differential calculus on manifolds. More precisely, by using microlocal analysis, we are able to prove propagation of regularity which together with the so-called Geometric Control Condition and Unique Continuation Property help us to prove global control results for the system under consideration. As a main novelty this manuscript presents the relation between the geometric control condition and the controllability for the fractional Schrödinger equation.

Rapid Exponential Stabilization of a Boussinesq System of KdV--KdV Type

This paper studies the exponential stabilization of a Boussinesq system describing the two-way propagation of small amplitude gravity waves on the surface of an ideal fluid, the so-called Boussinesq system of the Korteweg-de Vries type. We use a Gramian-based method introduced by Urquiza to design our feedback control. By means of spectral analysis and Fourier expansion, we show that the solutions of the linearized system decay uniformly to zero when the feedback control is applied. The decay rate can be chosen as large as we want. The main novelty of our work is that we can exponentially stabilize this system of two coupled equations using only one scalar input.

Control results with overdetermination condition for higher order dispersive system

In recent years, controllability problems for dispersive systems have been extensively studied. This work is dedicated to proving a new type of controllability for a dispersive fifth order equation that models water waves, what we will now call the overdetermination control problem. Precisely, we are able to find a control acting at the boundary that guarantees that the solutions of the problem under consideration satisfy an overdetermination integral condition. In addition, when we make the control act internally in the system, instead of the boundary, we are also able to prove that this condition is satisfied. These problems give answers that were left open in [6] and present a new way to prove boundary and internal controllability results for a fifth order KdV type equation.
