On an exact hydrodynamic solution for the elliptic flow

Looking for the underlying hydrodynamic mechanisms determining the elliptic flow we show that for an expanding relativistic perfect fluid the transverse flow may derive from a solvable hydrodynamic potential, if the entropy is transversally conserved and the corresponding expansion "quasi-stationary", that is mainly governed by the temperature cooling. Exact solutions for the velocity flow coefficients $v_2$ and the temperature dependence of the spatial and momentum anisotropy are obtained and shown to be in agreement with the elliptic flow features of heavy-ion collisions.

Traveling wave solution of the Reggeon Field Theory

We identify the nonlinear evolution equation in impact-parameter space for the "Supercritical Pomeron" in Reggeon Field Theory as a 2-dimensional stochastic Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piscounov equation. It exactly preserves unitarity and leads in its radial form to an high energy traveling wave solution corresponding to an ""universal" behaviour of the impact-parameter front profile of the elastic amplitude; Its rapidity dependence and form depend only on one parameter, the noise strength, independently of the initial conditions and of the non-linear terms restoring unitarity. Theoretical predictions are presented for the three typical distinct regimes corresponding to zero, weak and strong noise.

Entropy flow of a perfect fluid in (1+1) hydrodynamics

Using the formalism of the Khalatnikov potential, we derive exact general formulae for the entropy flow dS/dy, where y is the rapidity, as a function of temperature for the (1+1) relativistic hydrodynamics of a perfect fluid. We study in particular flows dominated by a sufficiently long hydrodynamic evolution, and provide an explicit analytical solution for dS/dy. We discuss the theoretical implications of our general formulae and some phenomenological applications for heavy-ion collisions.

Systematic Analysis of Scaling Properties in Deep Inelastic Scattering

Using the ``Quality Factor'' (QF) method, we analyse the scaling properties of deep-inelastic processes at HERA and fixed target experiments for x<0.01. We look for scaling formulae of the form sigma(tau), where tau(log Q^2, Y) is a scaling variable suggested by the asymptotic properties of QCD evolution equations with rapidity Y. We consider four cases: ``Fixed Coupling'', corresponding to the original geometric scaling proposal and motivated by the asymptotic properties of the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation with fixed QCD coupling constant, two versions ``Running Coupling I,II'' of the scaling suggested by the BK equation with running coupling, and ``Diffusive Scaling'' suggested by the QCD evolution equation with Pomeron loops. The Quality Factors, quantifying the phenomenological validity of the candidate scaling variables, are fitted on the total and DVCS cross-section data from HERA and predictions are made for the elastic vector-meson and for the diffractive cross-sections at fixed small x_pom or beta. The first three scaling formulae have comparably good QF while the fourth one is disfavored. Adjusting initial conditions gives a significant improvement of the ``Running Coupling II'' scaling.

Introduction to String Theory and Gauge/Gravity duality for students in QCD and QGP phenomenology

String theory has been initially derived from motivations coming from strong interaction phenomenology, but its application faced deep conceptual and practical difficulties. The strong interactions found their theoretical foundation elsewhere, namely on QCD, the quantum gauge field theory of quarks and gluons. Recently, the Gauge/Gravity correspondence allowed to initiate a reformulation of the connection between strings and gauge field theories, avoiding some of the initial drawbacks and opening the way to new insights on the gauge theory at strong coupling and eventually QCD. Among others, the recent applications of the Gauge/Gravity correspondence to the formation of the QGP, the quark-gluon plasma, in heavy-ion reactions seem to provide a physically interesting insight on phenomenological features of the reactions. In these lectures we will give a simplified introduction to those aspects of string theory which, at the origin and in the recent developments, are connected to strong interactions, for those students which are starting to learn QCD and QGP physics from an experimental or phenomenological point of view.

On the maximal noise for stochastic and QCD traveling waves

Using the relation of a set of nonlinear Langevin equations with reaction-diffusion processes, we note the existence of a maximal strength of the noise for the stochastic traveling wave solutions of these equations. Its determination is obtained using the field-theoretical analysis of branching-annihilation random walks near the directed percolation transition. We study its consequence for the stochastic Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov equation. For the related Langevin equation modeling the Quantum Chromodynamic nonlinear evolution of the gluon density with rapidity, the physical maximal-noise limit may appear before the directed percolation transition, due to a shift in the traveling-wave speed. In this regime, an exact solution is known from a coalescence process. Universality and other open problems and applications are discussed in the outlook

Quark-Gluon Plasma/Black Hole duality from Gauge/Gravity Correspondence

The Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is the QCD phase of matter expected to be formed at small proper-times in the collision of heavy-ions at high energy. Experimental observations seem to favor a strongly coupled QCD plasma with the hydrodynamic properties of a quasi-perfect fluid, i.e. rapid thermalization (or isotropization) and small viscosity. The theoretical investigation of such properties is not obvious, due to the the strong coupling. The Gauge/Gravity correspondence provides a stimulating framework to explore the strong coupling regime of gauge theories using the dual string description. After a brief introduction to Gauge/Gravity duality, and among various existing studies, we focus on challenging problems of QGP hydrodynamics, such as viscosity and thermalization, in terms of gravitational duals of both the static and relativistically evolving plasma. We show how a Black Hole geometry arises naturally from the dual properties of a nearly perfect fluid and explore the lessons and prospects one may draw for actual heavy ion collisions from the Gauge/Gravity duality approach.

Universality of traveling waves with QCD running coupling

``Geometric scaling'', i.e. the dependence of DIS cross-sections on the ratio Q/Q_S, where Q_S(Y) is the rapidity-dependent \saturation scale, can be theoretically obtained from universal ``traveling wave'' solutions of the nonlinear Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) QCD evolution equation at fixed coupling. We examine the similar mean-field predictions beyond leading-logarithmic order, including running QCD coupling.

Non-forward Balitsky-Kovchegov equation and Vector Mesons

Considering the Balitsky-Kovchegov QCD evolution equation in full momentum space, we derive the travelling wave solutions expressing the nonlinear saturation constraints on the dipole scattering amplitude at non-zero momentum transfer. A phenomenological application to elastic vector meson production shows the compatibility of data with the QCD prediction: an enhanced saturation scale at intermediate momentum transfer.

QCD, Spin-Glass and String

When quarks and gluons are led to form a dense medium, like in high energy or/and heavy-ion collisions, it is interesting to ask the question which are the relevant degrees of freedom that Quantum Chromodynamics predict. The present notes correspond to two lectures given at Zakopane in the (rainy) summer of 2006, where this question is adressed concretely in two cases, one in the regime of weak coupling, the other one at strong coupling. Each case corresponds to the study of a dynamically important transient phase of quarks and gluons expected to appear from Quantum Chromodynamics. In lecture I, we examine the dynamical phase space of gluon transverse momenta near the so-called ``saturation'' phase including its fluctuation pattern. In lecture II, we study the dynamics of strongly interacting gauge-theory matter (modelling quark-gluon plasma) using the AdS/CFT duality between gauge field theory at strong coupling and a gravitational background in Anti-de Sitter space.

Gauge/gravity duality and thermalization of a boost-invariant perfect fluid

We derive the equation for the quasi-normal modes corresponding to the scalar excitation of a black hole moving away in the fifth dimension. This geometry is the AdS/CFT dual of a boost-invariant expanding perfect fluid in N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills theory at large proper-time. On the gauge-theory side, the dominant solution of the equation describes the decay back to equilibrium of a scalar excitation of the perfect fluid. Its characteristic proper-time can be interpreted as a thermalization time of the perfect fluid, which is a universal (and numerically small) constant in units of the unique scale of the problem. This may provide a new insight on the short thermalization-time puzzle encountered in heavy-ion collision phenomenology. A nontrivial scaling behaviour in proper-time is obtained which can be interpreted in terms of a slowly varying adiabatic approximation.

Spin-glass model of QCD near saturation

We establish a connection between the cascading of gluon momenta modeled with the diffusive approximation of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov kernel and the thermodynamics of directed polymers on a tree with disorder. Using known results on the low-temperature spin-glass phase of this statistical-mechanic problem we describe the dynamical phase space of gluon transverse momenta near saturation including its fluctuation pattern. It exhibits a nontrivial clustering structure, analoguous to ``hot spots'', whose distributions are derived and possess universal features in common with other spin-glass systems.

Asymptotic perfect fluid dynamics as a consequence of AdS/CFT

We study the dynamics of strongly interacting gauge-theory matter (modelling quark-gluon plasma) in a boost-invariant setting using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Using Fefferman-Graham coordinates and with the help of holographic renormalization, we show that perfect fluid hydrodynamics emerges at large times as the unique nonsingular asymptotic solution of the nonlinear Einstein equations in the bulk. The gravity dual can be interpreted as a black hole moving off in the fifth dimension. Asymptotic solutions different from perfect fluid behaviour can be ruled out by the appearance of curvature singularities in the dual bulk geometry. Subasymptotic deviations from perfect fluid behaviour remain possible within the same framework.

Traveling waves in high energy QCD

Saturation is expected to occur when a high density of partons (mainly gluons)- or equivalently strong fields in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) - is realized in the weak coupling regime. A way to reach saturation is through the high-energy evolution of an extended target probed at a fixed hard scale. In this case, the transition to saturation is expected to occur from nonlinear perturbative QCD dynamics. We discuss this approach to saturation, which is mathematically characterized by the appearance of traveling wave patterns in a suitable kinematical representation. A short review on traveling waves in high energy QCD and a first evidence of this phenomenon in deep-inelastic proton scattering are presented.

The Lund Model at Nonzero Impact Parameter

We extend the formulation of the longitudinal 1+1 dimensional Lund model to nonzero impact parameter using the minimal area assumption. Complete formulae for the string breaking probability and the momenta of the produced mesons are derived using the string worldsheet Minkowskian helicoid geometry. For strings stretched into the transverse dimension, we find probability distribution with slope linear in m_T similar to the statistical models but without any thermalization assumptions.
