Dynamical Formation of Regular Black Holes

We study dynamical gravitational collapse in a theory with an infinite tower of higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action and we show that, under very general conditions, it leads to the formation of regular black holes. Our results are facilitated by the use of a class of theories that possess second-order equations on spherically symmetric metrics, but which are general enough to provide a basis for the gravitational effective action. We analytically solve the collapse of a thin shell of dust and show that it inevitably experiences a bounce at small radius and that its motion can be extended to arbitrary proper time. The collapse of the shell always gives rise to a singularity-free, geodesically complete spacetime that contains horizons if the total mass is above a critical value. In that case, the shell bounces into a new universe through a white hole explosion. Our construction provides, to the best of our knowlege, the first fully dynamical description of formation of regular black holes, and it suggests that higher-derivative corrections may be the most natural way to resolve the singularities of Einstein's theory.

Nucleation of charged quantum de-Sitter$_{3}$ black holes

We construct charged, static black holes in three-dimensional de Sitter (dS$_{3}$) space that exactly account for semi-classical backreaction effects due to quantum conformal matter. This is accomplished using braneworld holography, where an accelerating, electrically charged anti-de Sitter$_{4}$ black hole localizes on a Randall-Sundrum end-of-the-world brane. Absent of backreaction, the black hole disappears, leaving a chemical conical defect. The "quantum" black hole has a physical parameter space characterized by a shark-fin diagram, with extremal, Nariai, and ultracold limits. We give a detailed analysis of the horizon thermodynamics, where we find the heat capacity of charged and neutral dS$_{3}$ black holes features Schottky peaks. In particular, for a specific temperature range, charged quantum black holes behave as thermal systems with a finite number of energy levels available to their underlying microscopic degrees of freedom, beyond which many energy levels become available. Finally, we compute the probability of nucleating quantum dS black holes. Our work gives a first step to study quantum matter backreaction effects on dS black hole decay.

Kasner eons in Lovelock black holes

In the vicinity of space-like singularities, general relativity predicts that the metric behaves, at each point, as a Kasner space which undergoes a series of "Kasner epochs" and "eras" characterized by certain transition rules. The period during which this process takes place defines a "Kasner eon", which comes to an end when higher-curvature or quantum effects become relevant. When higher-curvature densities are included in the action, spacetime can undergo transitions into additional Kasner eons. During each eon, the metric behaves locally as a Kasner solution to the higher-curvature density controlling the dynamics. In this paper we identify the presence of Kasner eons in the interior of static and spherically symmetric Lovelock gravity black holes. We determine the conditions under which eons occur and study the Kasner metrics which characterize them, as well as the transitions between them. We show that the null energy condition implies a monotonicity property for the effective Kasner exponent at the end of the Einsteinian eon. We also characterize the Kasner solutions of more general higher-curvature theories of gravity. In particular, we observe that the Einstein gravity condition that the sum of the Kasner exponents adds up to one, $\sum_{i=1}^{D-1}p_i=1$, admits a universal generalization in the form of a family of Kasner metrics satisfying $\sum_{i=1}^{D-1}p_i=2n -1$ which exists for any order-$n$ higher-curvature density and in general dimensions.

Kasner Epochs, Eras and Eons

As shown in the classic work of Belinski, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz, the approach to a generic space-like singularity in general relativity consists of a sequence of eras and epochs in which the metric is locally Kasner, connected by brief transitions. When quantum gravity effects are included, we argue that a new type of transition arises, giving rise to Kasner eons: periods which are dominated by emergent physics at each energy scale. We comment on the different ways in which the Einsteinian eon may come to an end and show explicitly how additional Kasner eons arise in the interior of a black hole solution due to higher-derivative corrections.

Evolution of creases on the event horizon of a black hole merger

A generic black hole merger occurs through a restructuring of creases (sharp edges) on the event horizon. This process is studied for a black hole merger in the limit of infinite mass ratio, for which constructing the event horizon reduces to finding a null hypersurface that asymptotes to a Rindler horizon in the Kerr spacetime. Geometrical properties of the creases on this horizon are determined and the results are compared with the predictions of an exact local description of the event horizon in a generic merger. The crease set is shown to have finite area. A recently proposed expression for the gravitational entropy of a crease is shown to diverge at the instant of merger. Caustics on (and off) the event horizon are determined by exploiting the correspondence with the problem of gravitational lensing by a Kerr black hole. Caustics form an "astroid tube" in spacetime, two edges of which lie on the event horizon of the merger. Perturbative expressions for the location of this tube are presented, extending previous work to much higher perturbative order.

Quantum inequalities for quantum black holes

We formulate spacetime inequalities applicable to quantum-corrected black holes to all orders of backreaction in semiclassical gravity. Namely, we propose refined versions of the quantum Penrose and reverse isoperimetric inequalities, valid for all known three-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter quantum black holes. Previous proposals of the quantum Penrose inequality apply in higher dimensions but fail when applied in three dimensions beyond the perturbative regime. Our quantum Penrose inequality, valid in three dimensions, holds at all orders of backreaction. This suggests cosmic censorship must exist in non-perturbative semiclassical gravity. Our quantum reverse isoperimetric inequality implies a maximum entropy state for quantum black holes at fixed volume.

Nonlocal Massive Gravity from Einstein Gravity

We present a top-down construction of a three-dimensional non-local theory of massive gravity. This "Non-Local Massive Gravity" (NLMG) is obtained as the gravitational theory induced by Einstein gravity on a brane inserted in Anti-de Sitter space modified by an overall minus sign. The theory involves an infinite series of increasingly complicated higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action, with the quadratic term coinciding with New Massive Gravity. We obtain an analytic formula for the quadratic action of NLMG and show that its linearized spectrum consists of an infinite tower of positive-energy massive spin-2 modes. We compute the Newtonian potential and show that the introduction of the infinite series of terms makes it behave as $\sim 1/r$ at short distances, as opposed to the logarithmic behavior encountered when the series is truncated at any finite order. We use this and input from brane-world holography to argue that the theory may contain asymptotically flat black hole solutions.

Chemical Potential and Charge in Quantum Black Holes

We study systems in $2+1$ dimensions consisting of defects that source an electric charge, or a magnetic flux, of a $U(1)$ field, and we use holography to compute their effects on quantum conformal fields. We can also hide the defects inside the horizon of a black hole, where they continue to affect the quantum fields outside. By extending the solutions to braneworld holography, we find the non-linear backreaction of the quantum fields on the defect and black hole backgrounds. This gives quantum charged point particles and black holes. The charged quantum black holes markedly differ from classically charged BTZ black holes, since the quantum-induced electromagnetic field in $2+1$ dimensions has a better asymptotic behavior than its classical counterpart. The construction also gives a new class of (near-)extremal charged quantum black holes with AdS$_2$ throats.

Regular Black Holes From Pure Gravity

We show via an explicit construction how an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections generically leads to a resolution of the Schwarzschild singularity in any spacetime dimension $D \ge 5$. The theories we consider have two key properties that ensure the results are general and robust: (1) they provide a basis for (vacuum) gravitational effective field theory in five and higher-dimensions, (2) for each value of the mass, they have a unique static spherically symmetric solution. We present several exact solutions of the theories that include the Hayward black hole and metrics similar to the Bardeen and Dymnikova ones. Unlike previous constructions, these regular black holes arise as vacuum solutions, as we include no matter fields whatsoever in our analysis. We show how the black hole thermodynamics can be studied in a completely universal and unambiguous way for all solutions.

Entropy Bounds for Rotating AdS Black Holes

We propose novel thermodynamic inequalities that apply to stationary asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. These inequalities incorporate the thermodynamic volume and refine the reverse isoperimetric inequality. To assess the validity of our conjectures, we apply them to a wide range of analytical black hole solutions, observing compelling evidence in their favour. Intriguingly, our findings indicate that these inequalities may also apply for black holes of non-spherical horizon topology, as we show their validity as well for thin black rings in AdS.

Marginally Outer Trapped Tori in Black Hole Spacetimes

During a binary black hole merger, multiple intermediary marginally outer trapped tubes connect the initial pair of apparent horizons with the final (single) apparent horizon. The marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTSs) that foliate these tubes can have complicated geometries as well as non-spherical topologies. In particular, toroidal MOTSs form inside both of the original black holes during the early stages of a head-on merger that starts from time-symmetric initial data [1]. We show that toroidal MOTSs also form in the maximal analytic extension of the Schwarzschild spacetime as Kruskal time advances from the $T=0$ moment of time symmetry. As for the merger simulations, they cross the Einstein-Rosen bridge and are tightly sandwiched between the apparent horizons in the two asymptotic regions at early times. This strongly suggests that their formation is a consequence of the initial conditions rather than merger physics. Finally, we consider MOTSs of spherical topology in the Kruskal-Szekeres slicing and study their properties. All of these are contained within the apparent horizon but some do not enclose the wormhole.

No logarithmic corrections to entropy in shift-symmetric Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Employing the covariant phase space formalism, we discuss black hole thermodynamics in four-dimensional scalar-tensor Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We argue that logarithmic corrections to Wald entropy previously reported in this theory do not appear, due to the symmetry of the theory under constant shifts of the scalar field. Instead, we obtain the standard Bekenstein entropy of general relativity. Then, to satisfy the first law of black hole mechanics, the Hawking temperature must be modified. It has been proposed that such temperature modifications occur generically in scalar-tensor theories, due to different propagation speeds of gravitons and photons. We show that the temperature modifications also emerge in the Euclidean canonical ensemble approach to black hole thermodynamics. Notably, the boundary terms of the type we consider here can be considered in any scalar-tensor gravitational theories. Hence, we illustrate that adding a suitable boundary term to action may drastically affect black hole thermodynamics, changing both the entropy and the temperature.

Aspects of higher-curvature gravities with covariant derivatives

We study various aspects of higher-curvature theories of gravity built from contractions of the metric, the Riemann tensor and the covariant derivative, $\mathcal{L}(g^{ab},R_{abcd},\nabla_a)$. We characterise the linearized spectrum of these theories and compute the modified Newton potential in the general case. Then, we present the first examples of Generalized Quasi-topological (GQT) gravities involving covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We argue that they always have second-order equations on maximally symmetric backgrounds. Focusing on four spacetime dimensions, we find new densities of that type involving eight and ten derivatives of the metric. In the latter case, we find new modifications of the Schwarzschild black hole. These display thermodynamic properties which depart from the ones of polynomial GQT black holes. In particular, the relation between the temperature and the mass of small black holes, $T\sim M^{1/3}$, which universally holds for general polynomial GQT modifications of Einstein gravity, gets modified in the presence of the new density with covariant derivatives to $T\sim M^{3}$. Finally, we consider brane-world gravities induced by Einstein gravity in the AdS bulk. We show that the effective quadratic action for the brane-world theory involving arbitrary high-order terms in the action can be written explicitly in a closed form in terms of Bessel functions. We use this result to compute the propagator of metric perturbations on the brane and its pole structure in various dimensions, always finding infinite towers of ghost modes, as well as tachyons and more exotic modes in some cases.

On the stability of Einsteinian Cubic Gravity black holes in EFT

In this note we revisit the analysis performed in arXiv:2305.07217 of odd-parity perturbations around static and spherically symmetric black holes in Einsteinian Cubic Gravity (ECG). We show that the additional propagating modes always have masses much above the cutoff of the theory. Therefore, contrary to what is claimed in that paper, the ECG black holes remain stable within the effective field theory regime. We consider the same analysis for a general cubic theory, showing that the ECG results are not special in this regard. We use the occasion to make some clarifications on the role, uses and limitations of ECG and its generalizations.

Phase Transitions and Stability of Eguchi-Hanson-AdS Solitons

The Eguchi-Hanson-AdS$_5$ family of spacetimes are a class of static, geodesically complete asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ soliton solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations with negative cosmological constant. They have negative mass and are parameterized by an integer $p\geq 3$ with a conformal boundary with spatial topology $L(p,1)$. We investigate mode solutions of the scalar wave equation on this background and show that, similar to AdS$_5$, the geometry admits a normal mode spectrum (i.e. solutions that neither grow or decay in time). In addition, we also discuss other geometric properties of these soliton spacetimes, including the behaviour of causal geodesics and their thermodynamic properties. We also point out a surprising connection with the AdS soliton.

Universality for Black Hole Heat Engines Near Critical Points

Johnson has shown [arXiv:1703.06119] that in the vicinity of a critical point the efficiency of a black hole heat engine can approach the Carnot efficiency while maintaining finite power. We characterize and extend this result in several ways, and we show how the rate of approach to the Carnot efficiency is governed by the critical exponents. We apply these results to several classes of black holes to illustrate their validity. Odd-order Lovelock black holes are known to have isolated critical points for which the critical exponents differ from the mean field theory values, providing a non-trivial test of the results. In this case, our results indicate the impossibility of even-order Lovelock black holes with isolated critical points in this class: their existence would constitute a violation of the second law of thermodynamics.

Exotic marginally outer trapped surfaces in rotating spacetimes of any dimension

The recently developed MOTSodesic method for locating marginally outer trapped surfaces was effectively restricted to non-rotating spacetimes. In this paper we extend the method to (multi-)axisymmetric time slices of (multi-)axisymmetric spacetimes of any dimension. We then apply this method to study marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTSs) in the BTZ, Kerr and Myers-Perry black holes. While there are many similarities between the MOTSs observed in these spacetimes and those seen in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström, details of the more complicated geometries also introduce some new, previously unseen, behaviours.

Generalized quasi-topological gravities: the whole shebang

Generalized quasi-topological gravities (GQTGs) are higher-curvature extensions of Einstein gravity in $D$-dimensions. Their defining properties include possessing second-order linearized equations of motion around maximally symmetric backgrounds as well as non-hairy generalizations of Schwarzschild's black hole characterized by a single function, $f(r)\equiv - g_{tt}=g_{rr}^{-1}$, which satisfies a second-order differential equation. In arXiv:1909.07983 GQTGs were shown to exist at all orders in curvature and for general $D$. In this paper we prove that, in fact, $n-1$ inequivalent classes of order-$n$ GQTGs exist for $D\geq 5$. Amongst these, we show that one -- and only one -- type of densities is of the Quasi-topological kind, namely, such that the equation for $f(r)$ is algebraic. Our arguments do not work for $D=4$, in which case there seems to be a single unique GQT density at each order which is not of the Quasi-topological kind. We compute the thermodynamic charges of the most general $D$-dimensional order-$n$ GQTG, verify that they satisfy the first law and provide evidence that they can be entirely written in terms of the embedding function which determines the maximally symmetric vacua of the theory.
