Cluster state generation using van der Waals and dipole-dipole interactions in optical lattices

We present a scalable method for generation of a cluster state for measurement-based quantum computing using van der Waals or dipole-dipole interactions between neutral atoms or polar molecules in an optical lattice. Nearest neighbor entanglement is accomplished by performing a phase gate using interaction of atoms in Rydberg states or molecules in large dipole moment states. All nearest neighbors are sequentially entangled in a finite number of operations, independent of the number of qubits, producing a 1D cluster state. A universal 2D cluster state can be generated in several ms in a two-dimensional optical lattice by producing a series of 1D cluster states in one lattice direction, followed by application of the entangling operations in another lattice direction. We discuss the viability of the scheme with Rb Rydberg atoms.

Long-range three-body atom-diatom potential for doublet Li${}_3$

An accurate long-range {\em ab initio} potential energy surface has been calculated for the ground state ${}^2A'$ lithium trimer in the frozen diatom approximation using all electron RCCSD(T). The {\em ab initio} energies are corrected for basis set superposition error and extrapolated to the complete basis limit. Molecular van der Waals dispersion coefficients and three-body dispersion damping terms for the atom-diatomic dissociation limit are presented from a linear least squares fit and shown to be an essentially exact representation of the {\em ab initio} surface at large range.

Rubidium Rydberg macrodimers

We explore long-range interactions between two atoms excited into high principal quantum number n Rydberg states, and present calculated potential energy surfaces (PES) for various symmetries of doubly excited ns and np rubidium atoms. We show that the PES for these symmetries exhibit deep (~GHz) potential wells, which can support very extended (~micrometers) bound vibrational states (macrodimers). We present n-scaling relations for both the depth De of the wells and the equilibrium separations Re of these macrodimers, and explore their response to small electric fields and stability with respect to predissociation. Finally, we present a scheme to form and study these macrodimers via photoassociation, and show how one can probe the various \ell-character of the potential wells.

Formation of Rydberg macrodimers and their properties

We investigate the interaction between two rubidium atoms in highly excited Rydberg states, and find that very long-range potential wells exist. These wells are shown to support many bound states. We calculate the properties of the wells and bound levels, and show that their lifetimes are limited by that of the constituent Rydberg atoms. We also show how these $μ$m-size bound states can be populated {\it via} photoassociation (PA), and how the signature of the ad-mixing of various $\ell$-character producing the potential wells could be probed. We discuss how sharp variations of the PA rate %to macrodimer bound levels could act as a switching mechanism with potential application to quantum information processing.

Polarization of the charge-exchange X-rays induced in the Heliosphere

We report results of a theoretical investigation of polarization of the X-ray emissions induced in charge-exchange collisions of fully stripped solar wind ions C$^{6+}$ and O$^{8+}$ with the heliospheric hydrogen atoms. The polarization of X-ray emissions has been computed for line-of-sight observations within the ecliptic plane as a function of solar wind ion velocities, including a range of velocities corresponding to the slow and fast solar wind, and Coronal Mass Ejections. To determine the variability of polarization of heliospheric X-ray emissions, the polarization has been computed for solar minimum conditions with self-consistent parameters of the solar wind plasma and heliospheric gas and compared with the polarization calculated for an averaged solar activity. We predict the polarization of charge-exchange X-rays to be between 3% and 8%, depending on the line-of-sight geometry, solar wind ion velocity, and the selected emission lines.

Structure and thermochemistry of K$_2$Rb, KRb$_2$ and K$_2$Rb$_2$

The formation and interaction of ultracold polar molecules is a topic of active research. Understanding possible reaction paths and molecular combinations requires accurate studies of the fragment and product energetics. We have calculated accurate gradient optimized ground state structures and zero point corrected atomization energies for the trimers and tetramers formed by the reaction of KRb with KRb and corresponding isolated atoms. The K${}_2$Rb andKRb${}_2$ trimers are found to have global minima at the $C_{2v}$ configurationwith atomization energies of 6065 and 5931 cm${}^{-1}$ while the tetramer is found to have two stable planar structures, of $D_{2h}$ and $C_s$ symmetry, which have atomization energies of 11131 cm${}^{-1}$ an 11133 cm${}^{-1}$, respectively. We have calculated the minimum energy reaction path for the reaction KRb+KRb to K$_2+$Rb$_2$ and found it to be barrierless.

Ab initio potential curves for the X $^2 Σ_{u}^+$ and B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ states of Be$_{2}^+$: Existence of a double minimum

We report ab initio calculations of the X $^2 Σ_{u}^+ $ and B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ states of the Be$_{2}^+$ dimer. Full valence configuration interaction calculations were performed using the aug-cc-pVnZ basis sets and the results were extrapolated to the CBS limit. Core-core, core-valence effects are included at the CCSDT/MTsmall level of theory. Two local minima, separated by a large barrier, are found in the expected repulsive B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ state. Spectroscopic constants have been calculated and good agreement is found with the recent measurements of Merritt et al. Bound vibrational levels, transition moments and lifetimes have also been calculated.

Phase gate and readout with an atom/molecule hybrid platform

We suggest a combined atomic/molecular system for quantum computation, which takes advantage of highly developed techniques to control atoms and recent experimental progress in manipulation of ultracold molecules. We show that two atoms of different species in a given site, {\it e.g.}, in an optical lattice, could be used for qubit encoding, initialization and readout, with one atom carrying the qubit, the other enabling a gate. In particular, we describe how a two-qubit phase gate can be realized by transferring a pair of atoms into the ground rovibrational state of a polar molecule with a large dipole moment, and allowing two molecules to interact via their dipole-dipole interaction. We also discuss how the reverse process of coherently transferring a molecule into a pair of atoms could be used as a readout tool for molecular quantum computers.

Potential energy surface of the 2A' Li2+Li doublet ground state

The lowest doublet electronic state for the lithium trimer (2A') is calculated for use in three-body scattering calculations using the valence electron FCI method with atomic cores represented using an effective core potential. It is shown that an accurate description of core-valence correlation is necessary for accurate calculations of molecular bond lengths, frequencies and dissociation energies. Interpolation between 2A' ab initio surface data points in a sparse grid is done using the global interpolant moving least squares method with a smooth radial data cutoff function included in the fitting weights and bivariate polynomials as a basis set. The Jahn-Teller splitting of the 2E' surface into the 2A1 and 2B2 states is investigated using a combination of both CASSCF and FCI levels of theory. Additionally, preliminary calculations of the 2A'' surface are also presented using second order spin restricted open-shell Moller-Plesset perturbation theory.

Efficient formation of ground state ultracold molecules via STIRAP from the continuum at a Feshbach resonance

We develop a complete theoretical description of photoassociative Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) near a Feshbach resonance in a thermal atomic gas. We show that it is possible to use low intensity laser pulses to directly excite the continuum at a Feshbach resonance and transfer nearly the entire atomic population to the lowest rovibrational level in the molecular ground state. In case of a broad resonance, commonly found in several diatomic alkali molecules, our model predicts a transfer efficiency $η$ up to 97% for a given atom pair, and up to 70% when averaged over an atomic ensemble. The laser intensities and pulse durations needed for optimal transfer are $10^2-10^3$ W/cm$^2$ and several $μ$s. Such efficiency compares to or surpasses currently available techniques for creating stable diatomic molecules, and the versatility of this approach simplifies its potential use for many molecular species.

Giant formation rates of ultracold molecules via Feshbach Optimized Photoassociation

Ultracold molecules offer a broad variety of applications, ranging from metrology to quantum computing. However, forming "real" ultracold molecules, {\it i.e.} in deeply bound levels, is a very difficult proposition. Here, we show how photoassociation in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance enhance molecular formation rates by several orders of magnitude. We illustrate this effect in heteronuclear systems, and find giant rate coefficients even in deeply bound levels. We also give a simple analytical expression for the photoassociation rates, and discuss future applications of the Feshbach Optimized Photoassociation, or FOPA, technique.

Feshbach resonances in ultracold ^{6,7}Li + ^{23}Na atomic mixtures

We report a theoretical study of Feshbach resonances in $^{6}$Li + $^{23}$Na and $^{7}$Li + $^{23}$Na mixtures at ultracold temperatures using new accurate interaction potentials in a full quantum coupled-channel calculation. Feshbach resonances for $l=0$ in the initial collisional open channel $^6$Li$(f=1/2, m_f=1/2) + ^{23}$Na$(f=1, m_f=1)$ are found to agree with previous measurements, leading to precise values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths for the $^{6,7}$Li$+^{23}$Na pairs. We also predict additional Feshbach resonances within experimentally attainable magnetic fields for other collision channels.

Formation of deeply bound molecules via chainwise adiabatic passage

We suggest and analyze a novel technique for efficient and robust creation of dense ultracold molecular ensembles in their ground rovibrational state. In our approach a molecule is brought to the ground state through a series of intermediate vibrational states via a {\em multistate chainwise Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage} (c-STIRAP) technique. We study the influence of the intermediate states decay on the transfer process and suggest an approach that minimizes the population of these states, resulting in a maximal transfer efficiency. As an example, we analyze the formation of $^{87}$Rb$_{2}$ starting from an initial Feshbach molecular state and taking into account major decay mechanisms due to inelastic atom-molecule and molecule-molecule collisions. Numerical analysis suggests a transfer efficiency $>$ 90%, even in the presence of strong collisional relaxation as are present in a high density atomic gas.

Schemes for robust quantum computation with polar molecules: analysis of experimental feasibility

We analyse recently proposed physical implementations of a quantum computer based on polar molecules. A set of general requirements for a molecular system is presented, which would provide an optimal combination of quantum gate times, coherence times, number of operations, high gate accuracy and experimental feasibility. We proceed with a detailed analysis of a scheme utilizing switchable dipole-dipole interactions between polar molecules. Switchable dipole-dipole interaction is an efficient tool for realization of two-qubit quantum gates, necessary to construct a universal set of gates. We consider three possible realizations of a phase gate using specific molecules, such as CO, NF, alkali dimers and alkaline-earth monohalides. We suggest suitable electronic states and ransitions and investigate requirements for the pulses driving them. Finally, we analyse possible sources of decoherence.

Spectroscopic Temperature Determination of Degenerate Fermi Gases

We suggest a simple method for measuring the temperature of ultra-cold gases made of fermions. We show that by using a two-photon Raman probe, it is possible to obtain lineshapes which reveal properties of the degenerate sample, notably its temperature $T$. The proposed method could be used with identical fermions in different hyperfine states interacting via s-wave scattering or identical fermions in the same hyperfine state via p-wave scattering. We illustrate the applicability of the method in realistic conditions for $^6$Li prepared in two different hyperfine states. We find that temperatures down to 0.05 $T_{F}$ can be determined by this {\it in-situ} method.

Collisional properties of trapped cold chromium atoms

We report on calculations of the elastic cross section and thermalization rate for collision between two maximally spin-polarized chromium atoms in the cold and ultracold regimes, relevant to buffer-gas and magneto-optical cooling of chromium atoms. We calculate ab initio potential energy curves for Cr2 and the van der Waals coefficient C6, and construct interaction potentials between two colliding Cr atoms. We explore the effect of shape resonances on elastic cross section, and find that they dramatically affect the thermalization rate. Our calculated value for the s-wave scattering length is compared in magnitude with a recent measurement at ultracold temperatures.
