Towards AMS measurements of $^{91}$Nb, $^{94}$Nb and $^{93}$Mo produced in fusion environment

Long-lived radionuclides, such as $^{91}$Nb, $^{94}$Nb and $^{93}$Mo, are expected to be produced in nuclear fusion reactors by reactions of high-energy neutrons with the structural material. Accurate predictions of waste categorization require experimental validation of simulation codes like FISPACT-II. This work explores the use of Ion-Laser InterAction Mass Spectrometry (ILIAMS) at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) to measure these three radionuclides by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The ILIAMS setup employs laser photodetachment to suppress their respective stable isobars: $^{91}$Zr, $^{94}$Zr and $^{94}$Mo, and $^{93}$Nb. For $^{91,94}$Nb measurements, NbO$_3^-$ is selected, with interferences from ZrO$_3^-$ suppressed by collisions with the He buffer gas in the ion cooler. The suppression can be enhanced by overlapping a 355\,nm laser with the ion beam. The lower limit for the suppression factor is 37000. In that way, we reach $^{91}$Zr/$^{93}$Nb and $^{94}$Zr/$^{93}$Nb levels of $1.2\,\times\,10^{-14}$ and $1.8\,\times\,10^{-14}$, respectively, in targets prepared from commercial Nb$_2$O$_5$. MoO$_3$ is suppressed by a factor of 4360, leading to a $^{94}$Mo/$^{93}$Nb interference of $1.28\,\times\,10^{-10}$ in the same targets. For $^{93}$Mo measurements, MoO$_2^-$ is selected, with interference from $^{93}$NbO$_2^-$ suppressed by 637\,nm photons by a factor of $5.5\,\times\,10^6$. This results in a $^{93}$Nb/$^\text{nat}$Mo level of $1.3\,\times\,10^{-13}$ in targets prepared from commercial MoO$_3$. Suppression factors as high as this are not achieved by isobar suppression techniques based on differences in energy loss, not even by AMS facilities with terminal voltages above 8.5\,MV.

Detection of $^{135}$Cs & $^{137}$Cs in environmental samples by AMS

The detection of low abundances of $^{135}$Cs in environmental samples is of significant interest in different fields of environmental sciences, especially in combination with its shorter-lived sister isotope $^{137}$Cs. The method of Ion-Laser InterAction Mass Spectrometry (ILIAMS) for barium separation at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) was investigated and further improved for low abundance cesium detection. The difluorides BaF$_2^-$ and CsF$_2^-$ differ in their electron detachment energies and make isobar suppression with ILIAMS by more than 7 orders of magnitude possible. By this method, samples with ratios down to the order of $^{135,137}$Cs/$^{133}$Cs $\approx 10^{-11}$ are measurable and the $^{135}$Cs/$^{137}$Cs ratios of first environmental samples were determined by AMS.

Precise measurement of the thermal and stellar $^{54}$Fe($n, γ$)$^{55}$Fe cross sections via AMS

The detection of long-lived radionuclides through ultra-sensitive single atom counting via accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) offers opportunities for precise measurements of neutron capture cross sections, e.g. for nuclear astrophysics. The technique represents a truly complementary approach, completely independent of previous experimental methods. The potential of this technique is highlighted at the example of the $^{54}$Fe($n, γ$)$^{55}$Fe reaction. Following a series of irradiations with neutrons from cold and thermal to keV energies, the produced long-lived $^{55}$Fe nuclei ($t_{1/2}=2.744(9)$ yr) were analyzed at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA). A reproducibility of about 1% could be achieved for the detection of $^{55}$Fe, yielding cross section uncertainties of less than 3%. Thus, the new data can serve as anchor points to time-of-flight experiments. We report significantly improved neutron capture cross sections at thermal energy ($σ_{th}=2.30\pm0.07$ b) as well as for a quasi-Maxwellian spectrum of $kT=25$ keV ($σ=30.3\pm1.2$ mb) and for $E_n=481\pm53$ keV ($σ= 6.01\pm0.23$ mb). The new experimental cross sections have been used to deduce improved Maxwellian average cross sections in the temperature regime of the common $s$-process scenarios. The astrophysical impact is discussed using stellar models for low-mass AGB stars.

The Link Between the Local Bubble and Radioisotopic Signatures on Earth

Traces of 2-3 Myr old 60Fe were recently discovered in a manganese crust and in lunar samples. We have found that this signal is extended in time and is present in globally distributed deep-sea archives. A second 6.5-8.7 Myr old signature was revealed in a manganese crust. The existence of the Local Bubble hints to a recent nearby supernova-activity starting 13 Myr ago. With analytical and numerical models generating the Local Bubble, we explain the younger 60Fe-signature and thus link the evolution of the solar neighborhood to terrestrial anomalies.
