Hierarchical Retrieval: The Geometry and a Pretrain-Finetune Recipe

Dual encoder (DE) models, where a pair of matching query and document are embedded into similar vector representations, are widely used in information retrieval due to their simplicity and scalability. However, the Euclidean geometry of the embedding space limits the expressive power of DEs, which may compromise their quality. This paper investigates such limitations in the context of hierarchical retrieval (HR), where the document set has a hierarchical structure and the matching documents for a query are all of its ancestors. We first prove that DEs are feasible for HR as long as the embedding dimension is linear in the depth of the hierarchy and logarithmic in the number of documents. Then we study the problem of learning such embeddings in a standard retrieval setup where DEs are trained on samples of matching query and document pairs. Our experiments reveal a lost-in-the-long-distance phenomenon, where retrieval accuracy degrades for documents further away in the hierarchy. To address this, we introduce a pretrain-finetune recipe that significantly improves long-distance retrieval without sacrificing performance on closer documents. We experiment on a realistic hierarchy from WordNet for retrieving documents at various levels of abstraction, and show that pretrain-finetune boosts the recall on long-distance pairs from 19% to 76%. Finally, we demonstrate that our method improves retrieval of relevant products on a shopping queries dataset.

Decay of correlations in 1D lattice systems of continuous spins and long-range interaction

We consider an one-dimensional lattice system of unbounded and continuous spins. The Hamiltonian consists of a perturbed strictly-convex single-site potential and with longe-range interaction. We show that if the interactions decay algebraically of order 2+a, a>0 then the correlations also decay algebraically of order 2+ã for some ã > 0. For the argument we generalize a method from Zegarlinski from finite-range to infinite-range interaction to get a preliminary decay of correlations, which is improved to the correct order by a recursive scheme based on Lebowitz inequalities. Because the decay of correlations yields the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure, the main result of this article yields that the on-phase region of a continuous spin system is at least as large as for the Ising model.

Convergence of sectorial operators on varying Hilbert space

Convergence of operators acting on a given Hilbert space is an old and well studied topic in operator theory. The idea of introducing a related notion for operators acting on arying spaces is natural. However, it seems that the first results in this direction have been obtained only recently, to the best of our knowledge. Here we consider sectorial operators on scales of Hilbert spaces. We define a notion of convergence that generalises convergence of the resolvents in operator norm to the case when the operators act on different spaces and show that this kind of convergence is compatible with the functional calculus of the operator and moreover implies convergence of the spectrum. Finally, we present examples for which this convergence can be checked, including convergence of coefficients of parabolic problems. Convergence of a manifold (roughly speaking consisting of thin tubes) towards the manifold's skeleton graph plays a prominent role, being our main application.

A new proof of Doob's theorem

We prove that every bounded, positive, irreducible, stochastically continuous semigroup on the space of bounded, measurable functions which is strong Feller, consists of kernel operators and possesses an invariant measure converges pointwise. This differs from Doob's theorem in that we do not require the semigroup to be Markovian and request a fairly weak kind of irreducibility. In addition, we elaborate on the various notions of kernel operators in this context, show the stronger result that the adjoint semigroup converges strongly and discuss as an example diffusion equations on rough domains. The proofs are based on the theory of positive semigroups and do not use probability theory.

A note on the implicit function theorem for quasi-linear eigenvalue problems

We consider the quasi-linear eigenvalue problem $-Δ_p u = λg(u)$ subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded open set $Ω$, where $g$ is a locally Lipschitz continuous functions. Imposing no further conditions on $Ω$ or $g$ we show that for small $λ$ the problem has a bounded solution which is unique in the class of all small solutions. Moreover, this curve of solutions depends continuously on $λ$.

Inhomogeneous Parabolic Neumann Problems

We study second order parabolic equations on Lipschitz domains subject to inhomogeneous Neumann (or, more generally, Robin) boundary conditions. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and their continuity up to the boundary of the parabolic cylinder. Under natural assumptions on the coefficients and the inhomogeneity we can also prove convergence to an equilibrium or asymptotic almost periodicity.

Convergence of operator-semigroups associated with generalised elliptic forms

In a recent article, Arendt and ter Elst have shown that every sectorial form is in a natural way associated with the generator of an analytic strongly continuous semigroup, even if the form fails to be closable. As an intermediate step they have introduced so-called j-elliptic forms, which generalises the concept of elliptic forms in the sense of Lions. We push their analysis forward in that we discuss some perturbation and convergence results for semigroups associated with j-elliptic forms. In particular, we study convergence with respect to the trace norm or other Schatten norms. We apply our results to Laplace operators and Dirichlet-to-Neumann-type operators.

Quasilinear elliptic and parabolic Robin problems on Lipschitz domains

We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in $C(\barΩ)$ is m-accretive and densely defined. Thus it generates a non-linear strongly continuous contraction semigroup on $C(\barΩ)$.

Isometric Lattice Homomorphisms between Sobolev Spaces

Given bounded domains $Ω_1$ and $Ω_2$ in $\mathds{R}^N$ and an isometry $T$ from $W^{1,p}(Ω_1)$ to $W^{1,p}(Ω_2)$, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that $T$ corresponds to a rigid motion of the space, i.e., $Tu = \pm (u \circ ξ)$ for an isometry $ξ$, and that the domains are congruent. More general versions of the involved results are obtained along the way.

Regularity of Solutions of Linear Second Order Elliptic and Parabolic Boundary Value Problems on Lipschitz Domains

For a linear, strictly elliptic second order differential operator in divergence form with bounded, measurable coefficients on a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ we show that solutions of the corresponding elliptic problem with Robin and thus in particular with Neumann boundary conditions are Hoelder continuous for sufficiently $L^p$-regular right-hand sides. From this we deduce that the parabolic problem with Robin or Wentzell-Robin boundary conditions are well-posed on $\mathrm{C}(\barΩ)$.

Properties of Representations of Operators acting between Spaces of Vector-Valued Functions

A well-known result going back to the 1930s states that all bounded linear operators mapping scalar-valued $L^1$-spaces into $L^\infty$-spaces are kernel operators and that in fact this relation induces an isometric isomorphism between the space of such operators and the space of all bounded kernels. We extend this result to the case of spaces of vector-valued functions. A recent result due to Arendt and Thomaschewski states that the local operators acting on $L^p$-spaces of functions with values in separable Banach spaces are precisely the multiplication operators. We extend this result to non-separable dual spaces. Moreover, we relate positivity and other order properties of the operators to corresponding properties of the representations.

On the Banach-Mazur Type for Normed Spaces

In order to measure qualitative properties we introduce a notion of a type for arbitrary normed spaces which measures the worst possible growth of partial sums of sequences weakly converging to zero. The ideas can be traced back to Banach and Mazur who used this type to compare the so-called linear dimension of classical Banach spaces. As an application we compare the linear dimension and investigate isomorphy of some classical Banach spaces.

Approximation of the Semigroup generated by the Robin Laplacian in terms of the Gaussian Semigroup

For smooth bounded open sets in euclidean space, we construct corresponding contractive linear extension operators for the space of continuous functions which preserve regularity of functions in the domain of the Robin Laplacian. We also prove a Trotter-like approximation for the semigroup generated by the Laplacian subject to Robin boundary conditions in terms of these extension operators. The limiting case of Dirichlet boundary conditions is treated separately.

Well-Posedness and Symmetries of Strongly Coupled Network Equations

We consider a diffusion process on the edges of a finite network and allow for feedback effects between different, possibly non-adjacent edges. This generalizes the setting that is common in the literature, where the only considered interactions take place at the boundary, i. e., in the nodes of the network. We discuss well-posedness of the associated initial value problem as well as contractivity and positivity properties of its solutions. Finally, we discuss qualitative properties that can be formulated in terms of invariance of linear subspaces of the state space, i. e., of symmetries of the associated physical system. Applications to a neurobiological model as well as to a system of linear Schroedinger equations on a quantum graph are discussed.
