Non-linear electric transport in graphene: quantum quench dynamics and the Schwinger mechanism

We present a unified view of electric transport in undoped clean graphene for finite electric field. The weak field results agree with the Kubo approach. For strong electric field, the current increases non-linearly with the electric field as E^{3/2}. As the Dirac point is moved around in reciprocal space by the field, excited states are generated, in a way analogous to the generation of defects in a quench through a quantum critical point. These results are also analyzed in terms of Schwinger's pair production and Landau-Zener tunneling. An experiment for cold atoms in optical lattices is proposed to test these ideas.

Magnetic Monopoles in Spin Ice

Electrically charged particles, such as the electron, are ubiquitous. By contrast, no elementary particles with a net magnetic charge have ever been observed, despite intensive and prolonged searches. We pursue an alternative strategy, namely that of realising them not as elementary but rather as emergent particles, i.e., as manifestations of the correlations present in a strongly interacting many-body system. The most prominent examples of emergent quasiparticles are the ones with fractional electric charge e/3 in quantum Hall physics. Here we show that magnetic monopoles do emerge in a class of exotic magnets known collectively as spin ice: the dipole moment of the underlying electronic degrees of freedom fractionalises into monopoles. This enables us to account for a mysterious phase transition observed experimentally in spin ice in a magnetic field, which is a liquid-gas transition of the magnetic monopoles. These monopoles can also be detected by other means, e.g., in an experiment modelled after the celebrated Stanford magnetic monopole search.

Unconventional continuous phase transition in a three dimensional dimer model

Phase transitions occupy a central role in physics, due both to their experimental ubiquity and their fundamental conceptual importance. The explanation of universality at phase transitions was the great success of the theory formulated by Ginzburg and Landau, and extended through the renormalization group by Wilson. However, recent theoretical suggestions have challenged this point of view in certain situations. In this Letter we report the first large-scale simulations of a three-dimensional model proposed to be a candidate for requiring a description beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson framework: we study the phase transition from the dimer crystal to the Coulomb phase in the cubic dimer model. Our numerical results strongly indicate that the transition is continuous and are compatible with a tricritical universality class, at variance with previous proposals.

Linear independence of localized magnon states

At the magnetic saturation field, certain frustrated lattices have a class of states known as "localized multi-magnon states" as exact ground states. The number of these states scales exponentially with the number $N$ of spins and hence they have a finite entropy also in the thermodynamic limit $N\to \infty$ provided they are sufficiently linearly independent. In this article we present rigorous results concerning the linear dependence or independence of localized magnon states and investigate special examples. For large classes of spin lattices including what we called the orthogonal type and the isolated type as well as the kagomé, the checkerboard and the star lattice we have proven linear independence of all localized multi-magnon states. On the other hand the pyrochlore lattice provides an example of a spin lattice having localized multi-magnon states with considerable linear dependence.
