Beamline Simulation for the NNBAR Experiment at the European Spallation Source

The HIBEAM and NNBAR experiments are a proposed fundamental science experiments at the European Spallation Source, performing high precision searches for neutron conversions in several baryon number violating (BNV) channels. For simulations of the NNBAR beamline, a new sampling method has been developed. The method is based on probability density evaluation and duct source biasing and enables the simulations of the entire NNBAR beamline with high statistics while also preserving correlations of the neutron tracks.

Neutron absorption in supermirror coatings: Effects on shielding

The quantification of the dose rate and the composition of the dose in the vicinity of supermirror coated guides is essential for designing shielding for beamlines transporting neutrons with a high flux. We present results on a calculation of radiative neutron absorption in Ni/Ti and NiMo/Ti supermirror coatings which leads to the emission of high energy gamma rays. A simple parameterization of the absorption probability in the coating materials per incident neutron is given as a function of momentum transfer at reflection.

Coherent medium-induced gluon radiation in hard forward $1\to 1$ partonic processes

We revisit the medium-induced coherent radiation associated to hard and forward (small angle) scattering of an energetic parton through a nuclear medium. We consider all $1\to 1$ hard forward processes ($g \to g$, $q \to q$, $q \to g$ and $g \to q$), and derive the energy spectrum of induced coherent radiation rigorously to all orders in the opacity expansion and for the specific case of a Coulomb scattering potential. We obtain a simple general formula for the induced coherent spectrum, which encompasses the results corresponding to previously known special cases.

On the process-dependence of coherent medium-induced gluon radiation

Considering forward dijet production in the $q\to qg$ partonic process, we derive the spectrum of accompanying soft gluon radiation induced by rescatterings in a nuclear target. The spectrum is obtained to logarithmic accuracy for an arbitrary energy sharing between the final quark and gluon, and for final transverse momenta as well as momentum imbalance being large as compared to transverse momentum nuclear broadening. In the case of equal energy sharing and for approximately back-to-back quark and gluon transverse momenta, we reproduce a previous result of Liou and Mueller. Interpreting our result, we conjecture a simple formula for the medium-induced radiation spectrum associated to hard forward $1 \to n$ processes, which we explicitly check in the case of the $g \to gg$ process.

Reaction-diffusion approach in soft diffraction

We apply the reaction-diffusion (stochastic) approach to the numerical calculation of the elastic amplitude in the Reggeon Field Theory (RFT) and its single diffractive cut. Fits to the total, integrated and differential elastic cross sections with account of all Pomeron loops are reported together with all-loop calculation of the single difraction dissociation cross section.

Centrality and pT dependence of J/psi suppression in proton-nucleus collisions from parton energy loss

The effects of parton energy loss and pT-broadening in cold nuclear matter on the pT and centrality dependence, at various rapidities, of J/psi suppression in p-A collisions are investigated. Calculations are systematically compared to E866 and PHENIX measurements. The very good agreement between the data and the theoretical expectations further supports pT-broadening and the associated medium-induced parton energy loss as dominant effects in J/psi suppression in high-energy p-A collisions. Predictions for J/psi (and Upsilon) suppression in p-Pb collisions at the LHC are given.

Mass Hierarchy of Collisional Energy Loss

Collisional parton energy loss is revisited within a simple model assuming incoherent elastic scattering of on-shell projectile partons on partonic constituents of the QGP with HTL screening. The thermal motion of plasma particles is carefully taken into account. Results on $dE/dx$ are found to be consistent with other authors. There is a significant discrepancy in the energy loss pattern for the cases with thermal motion on and off, which illustrates the importance of taking the kinematics into account exactly. The dependence on the mass of the partons forming the plasma is included in the calculations and its influence on the collisional energy loss is studied. The mass hierarchy of collisional energy loss is found to have a strong dependence on the mass introduced for plasma particles. Due to difference in the mass hierarchy with radiative energy loss, the collisional one when included increases the relative suppression of heavy quarks compared to light quarks.

Varying and inverting the mass hierarchy in collisional energy loss

Heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC give access to the medium-induced suppression patterns of heavy-flavored single inclusive hadron spectra at high transverse momentum. This opens novel opportunities for a detailed characterization of the medium produced in the collision. In this note, we point out that the capacity of a QCD medium to absorb the recoil of a partonic projectile is an independent signature, which may differ for different media at the same density. In particular, while the mass hierarchy (i.e., the projectile mass dependence) of radiative energy loss depends solely on a property of the projectile, the mass hierarchy of collisional energy loss depends significantly on properties of the medium. By varying these properties in a class of models, we find that the mass hierarchy of collisional parton energy loss can be modified considerably and can even be inverted, compared to that of radiative parton energy loss. This may help to disentangle the relative strengths of radiative and collisional contributions to jet quenching, and it may be employed to constrain properties of the produced QCD medium beyond its density.
