Universality issues in surface kinetic roughening of thin solid films

Since publication of the main contributions on the theory of kinetic roughening more than fifteen years ago, many works have been reported on surface growth or erosion that employ the framework of dynamic scaling. This interest was mainly due to the predicted existence of just a few universality classes to describe the statistical properties of the morphology of growing surfaces and interfaces that appear in a wide range of physical systems. Nowadays, this prediction seems to be inaccurate. This situation has caused a clear detriment of these studies in spite of the undeniable existence of kinetic roughening in many different real systems, and without a clear understanding of the reasons behind the mismatch between theoretical expectations and experimental observations. In this chapter we aim to explore existing problems and shortcomings of both the theoretical and experimental approaches, focusing mainly on growth of thin solid films. Our analysis suggests that the theoretical framework as yet is not complete, while more systematic and consistent experiments need to be performed. Once these issues are taken into account, a more consistent and useful theory of kinetic roughening might develop.

A microscopic model for thin film spreading

A microscopic, driven lattice gas model is proposed for the dynamics and spatio-temporal fluctuations of the precursor film observed in spreading experiments. Matter is transported both by holes and particles, and the distribution of each can be described by driven diffusion with a moving boundary. This picture leads to a stochastic partial differential equation for the shape of the boundary, which agrees with the simulations of the lattice gas. Preliminary results for flow in a thermal gradient are discussed.

Transients due to instabilities hinder Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling: a unified derivation for surface growth by electrochemical and chemical vapor deposition

We propose a unified moving boundary problem for surface growth by electrochemical and chemical vapor deposition, which is derived from constitutive equations into which stochastic forces are incorporated. We compute the coefficients in the interface equation of motion as functions of phenomenological parameters. The equation features the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) non-linearity and instabilities which, depending on surface kinetics, can hinder the asymptotic KPZ scaling. Our results account for the universality and the experimental scarcity of KPZ scaling in the growth processes considered.

Dynamic renormalization group study of a generalized continuum model of crystalline surfaces

We apply the Nozieres-Gallet dynamic renormalization group (RG) scheme to a continuum equilibrium model of a d-dimensional surface relaxing by linear surface tension and linear surface diffusion, and which is subject to a lattice potential favoring discrete values of the height variable. The model thus interpolates between the overdamped sine-Gordon model and a related continuum model of crystalline tensionless surfaces. The RG flow predicts the existence of an equilibrium roughening transition only for d = 2 dimensional surfaces, between a flat low-temperature phase and a rough high-temperature phase in the Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) universality class. The surface is always in the flat phase for any other substrate dimensions d > 2. For any value of d, the linear surface diffusion mechanism is an irrelevant perturbation of the linear surface tension mechanism, but may induce long crossovers within which the scaling properties of the linear molecular-beam epitaxy equation are observed, thus increasing the value of the sine-Gordon roughening temperature. This phenomenon originates in the non-linear lattice potential, and is seen to occur even in the absence of a bare surface tension term. An important consequence of this is that a crystalline tensionless surface is asymptotically described at high temperatures by the EW universality class.

Production of ordered silicon nanocrystals by low-energy ion sputtering

We report on the production of ordered assemblies of silicon nanostructures by means of irradiation of a Si(100) substrate with 1.2 keV Ar ions at normal incidence. Atomic Force and High-Resolution Transmission Electron microscopies show that the silicon structures are crystalline, display homogeneous height, and spontaneously arrange into short-range hexagonal ordering. Under prolonged irradiation (up to 16 hours) all dot characteristics remain largely unchanged and a small corrugation develops at long wavelengths. We interpret the formation of the dots as a result of an instability due to the sputtering yield dependence on the local surface curvature

Morphology of Ion-Sputtered Surfaces

We derive a stochastic nonlinear continuum theory to describe the morphological evolution of amorphous surfaces eroded by ion bombardment. Starting from Sigmund's theory of sputter erosion, we calculate the coefficients appearing in the continuum equation in terms of the physical parameters characterizing the sputtering process. We analyze the morphological features predicted by the continuum theory, comparing them with the experimentally reported morphologies. We show that for short time scales, where the effect of nonlinear terms is negligible, the continuum theory predicts ripple formation. We demonstrate that in addition to relaxation by thermal surface diffusion, the sputtering process can also contribute to the smoothing mechanisms shaping the surface morphology. We explicitly calculate an effective surface diffusion constant characterizing this smoothing effect, and show that it is responsible for the low temperature ripple formation observed in various experiments. At long time scales the nonlinear terms dominate the evolution of the surface morphology. The nonlinear terms lead to the stabilization of the ripple wavelength and we show that, depending on the experimental parameters such as angle of incidence and ion energy, different morphologies can be observed: asymptotically, sputter eroded surfaces could undergo kinetic roughening, or can display novel ordered structures with rotated ripples. Finally, we discuss in detail the existing experimental support for the proposed theory, and uncover novel features of the surface morphology and evolution, that could be directly tested experimentally.

Multiparticle Biased DLA with surface diffusion: a comprehensive model of electrodeposition

We present a complete study of the Multiparticle Biased Diffusion-Limited Aggregation (MBDLA) model supplemented with surface difussion (SD), focusing on the relevance and effects of the latter transport mechanism. By comparing different algorithms, we show that MBDLA+SD is a very good qualitative model for electrodeposition in practically all the range of current intensities {\em provided} one introduces SD in the model in the proper fashion: We have found that the correct procedure involves simultaneous bulk diffusion and SD, introducing a time scale arising from the ratio of the rates of both processes. We discuss in detail the different morphologies obtained and compare them to the available experimental data with very satisfactory results. We also characterize the aggregates thus obtained by means of the dynamic scaling exponents of the interface height, allowing us to distinguish several regimes in the mentioned interface growth. Our asymptotic scaling exponents are again in good agreement with recent experiments. We conclude by discussing a global picture of the influence and consequences of SD in electrodeposition.

Dynamics of Rough Interfaces in Chemical Vapor Deposition: Experiments and a Model for Silica Films

We study the surface dynamics of silica films grown by low pressure chemical vapor deposition. Atomic force microscopy measurements show that the surface reaches a scale invariant stationary state compatible with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in three dimensions. At intermediate times the surface undergoes an unstable transient due to shadowing effects. By varying growth conditions and using spectroscopic techniques, we determine the physical origin of KPZ scaling to be a low value of the surface sticking probability, related to the surface concentration of reactive groups. We propose a stochastic equation that describes the qualitative behavior of our experimental system.

Analytical results for a continuum model of crystalline tensionless surfaces. I. Variational mean field study

We study analytically the equilibrium and near-equilibrium properties of a model of surfaces relaxing via linear surface diffusion and subject to a lattice potential. We employ the variational mean field formalism introduced by Saito for the study of the sine Gordon model. In equilibrium, our variational theory predicts a first order roughening transition between a flat low temperature phase and a rough high temperature phase with the properties of the linear molecular beam epitaxy equation. The study of a Gaussian approximation to the Langevin dynamics of the system indicates that the surface shows hysteresis when we continuously tune temperature. Out of equilibrium, this Langevin dynamics approach shows that the surface mobility can have different behaviours as a function of a driving flux. Some considerations are made regarding different dimensionalities and underlying lattices, and connections are drawn to related models or different approaches to the same model we study.

Anomalous scaling in a non local growth model in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class

We study the interface dynamics of a discrete model to quantitatively describe electrochemical deposition experiments. Extensive numerical simulations indicate that the interface dynamics is unstable at early times, but asymptotically displays the scaling of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. During the time interval in which the surface is unstable, its power spectrum is anomalous; hence the behaviors at length scales smaller than or comparable with the system size are described by different roughness exponents. These results are expected to apply to a wide range of electrochemical deposition experiments.

Super-roughening versus intrinsic anomalous scaling of surfaces

In this paper we study kinetically rough surfaces which display anomalous scaling in their local properties such as roughness, or height-height correlation function. By studying the power spectrum of the surface and its relation to the height-height correlation, we distinguish two independent causes for anomalous scaling. One is super-roughening (global roughness exponent larger than or equal to one), even if the spectrum behaves non anomalously. Another cause is what we term an intrinsically anomalous spectrum, in whose scaling an independent exponent exists, which induces different scaling properties for small and large length scales (that is, the surface is not self-affine). In this case, the surface does not need to be super-rough in order to display anomalous scaling. In both cases, we show how to extract the independent exponents and scaling relations from the correlation functions, and we illustrate our analysis with two exactly solvable examples. One is the simplest linear equation for molecular beam epitaxy , well known to display anomalous scaling due to super-roughening. The second example is a random diffusion equation, which features anomalous scaling independent of the value of the global roughness exponent below or above one.

Noisy Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation for an erosion model

We derive the continuum equation for a discrete model for ion sputtering. We follow an approach based on the master equation, and discuss how it can be truncated to a Fokker-Planck equation and mapped to a discrete Langevin equation. By taking the continuum limit, we arrive at the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with a stochastic noise term.

Stochastic Model for Surface Erosion Via Ion-Sputtering: Dynamical Evolution from Ripple Morphology to Rough Morphology

Surfaces eroded by ion-sputtering are sometimes observed to develop morphologies which are either ripple (periodic), or rough (non-periodic). We introduce a discrete stochastic model that allows us to interpret these experimental observations within a unified framework. We find that a periodic ripple morphology characterizes the initial stages of the evolution, whereas the surface displays self-affine scaling in the later time regime. Further, we argue that the stochastic continuum equation describing the surface height is a noisy version of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.

Renormalization Group Analysis of a Noisy Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation

We have analyzed the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation with a stochastic noise term through a dynamic renormalization group calculation. For a system in which the lattice spacing is smaller than the typical wavelength of the linear instability occurring in the system, the large-distance and long-time behavior of this equation is the same as for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in one and two spatial dimensions. For the $d=2$ case the agreement is only qualitative. On the other hand, when coarse-graining on larger scales the asymptotic flow depends on the initial values of the parameters.

Dynamic Scaling of Ion-Sputtered Surfaces

We derive a stochastic nonlinear equation to describe the evolution and scaling properties of surfaces eroded by ion bombardment. The coefficients appearing in the equation can be calculated explicitly in terms of the physical parameters characterizing the sputtering process. We find that transitions may take place between various scaling behaviors when experimental parameters such as the angle of incidence of the incoming ions or their average penetration depth, are varied.

Spectrum of an Elliptic Free Fermionic Corner Transfer Matrix Hamiltonian

The eigenvalues of the Corner Transfer Matrix Hamiltonian associated to the elliptic $R$ matrix of the eight vertex free fermion model are computed in the anisotropic case for magnetic field smaller than the critical value. An argument based on generating functions is given, and the results are checked numerically. The spectrum consists of equally spaced levels.
