Localization and resummation of unstable instantons in 2d Yang-Mills

We compute the exact all-orders perturbative expansion for the partition function of 2d $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on closed surfaces around higher critical points. We demonstrate that the expansion can be derived from the lattice partition function for all genera using a distributional generalization of the Poisson summation formula. We then recompute the expansion directly, using a stationary phase version of supersymmetric localization. The result of localization is a novel effective action which is itself a distribution rather than a function of the supersymmetric moduli. We comment on possible applications to A-twisted models and their analogs in higher dimensions.

Supersymmetric localization of (higher-spin) JT gravity: a bulk perspective

We study two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity on the disk topology by using a BF gauge theory in the presence of a boundary term. The system can be equivalently written in a supersymmetric way by introducing auxiliary gauginos and scalars with suitable boundary conditions on the hemisphere. We compute the exact partition function thanks to supersymmetric localization and we recover the result obtained from the Schwarzian theory by accurately identifying the physical scales. The calculation is then easily extended to the higher-spin generalization of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, finding perfect agreement with previous results. We argue that our procedure can also be applied to boundary-anchored Wilson line correlators.

The phase diagram of $T\bar{T}$-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the sphere

We study the large-$N$ dynamics of $T\bar{T}$-deformed two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at genus zero. The 1/$N$-expansion of the free energy is obtained by exploiting the associated flow equation and the complete phase diagram of the theory is derived for both signs of the rescaled deformation parameter $\tau$. We observe a third-order phase transition driven by instanton condensation, which is the deformed version of the familiar Douglas-Kazakov transition separating the weakly-coupled from the strongly-coupled phase. By studying said phases, we compute the deformation of both the perturbative sector and the Gross-Taylor string expansion. Nonperturbative corrections in $\tau$ drive the system into an unexplored disordered phase separated by a novel critical line meeting tangentially the Douglas-Kazakov one at a tricritical point. The associated phase transition is induced by the collision of large-$N$ saddle points, determining its second-order character.

Exact $T\bar{T}$-deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere

We study the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at genus zero by carrying out the analysis at the level of its instanton representation. We first focus on the perturbative sector by considering its power expansion in the deformation parameter $\mu$. By studying the resulting asymptotic series through resurgence theory, we determine the nonperturbative contributions that enter the result for $\mu<0$. We then extend this analysis to any flux sector by solving the relevant flow equation. Specifically, we impose boundary conditions corresponding to two distinct regimes: the quantum undeformed theory and the semiclassical limit of the deformed theory. The full partition function is obtained as a sum over all magnetic fluxes. For any $\mu>0$, only a finite portion of the quantum spectrum survives and the partition function reduces to a sum over a finite set of representations. For $\mu<0$, nonperturbative contributions regularize the partition function through an intriguing mechanism that generates nontrivial subtractions.

Exact $T\overline{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional Maxwell theory

$T\overline{T}$-deformed two-dimensional quantum Maxwell theory on the torus is examined, taking into account nonperturbative effects in the deformation parameter $\mu$. We study the deformed partition function solving the relevant flow equation at the level of individual flux sectors. Summing exactly the "instanton" series, we obtain a well-defined expression for the partition function at arbitrary $\mu$. For $\mu>0$, the quantum spectrum of the theory experiences a truncation, the partition function reducing to a sum over a finite set of positive-energy states. For $\mu<0$ instead, the appearance of nonperturbative contributions in $\mu$ drastically modifies the structure of the partition function, regularizing its naive divergences through instanton-like subtractions. For each flux sector, we show that the semiclassical contribution is dominated by the deformed classical action. The theory is observed to undergo infinite-order phase transitions for certain values of $\mu$, associated with the vanishing of Polyakov-loop correlators.

Nonperturbative effects and resurgence in JT gravity at finite cutoff

We investigate the nonperturbative structure of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity at finite cutoff, as given by its proposed formulation in terms of a $T\bar{T}$-deformed Schwarzian quantum mechanics. Our starting point is a careful computation of the disk partition function to all orders in the perturbative expansion in the cutoff parameter. We show that the perturbative series is asymptotic and that it admits a precise completion exploiting the analytical properties of its Borel transform, as prescribed by resurgence theory. The final result is then naturally interpreted in terms of the nonperturbative branch of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed spectrum. The finite-cutoff trumpet partition function is computed by applying the same strategy. In the second part of the paper, we propose an extension of this formalism to arbitrary topologies, using the basic gluing rules of the undeformed case. The Weil-Petersson integrations can be safely performed due to the nonperturbative corrections and give results that are compatible with the flow equation associated with the $T\bar{T}$ deformation. We derive exact expressions for general topologies and show that these are captured by a suitable deformation of the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion. Finally, we study the "slope" and "ramp" regimes of the spectral form factor as functions of the cutoff parameter.

Topological Correlators and Surface Defects from Equivariant Cohomology

We find a one-dimensional protected subsector of $\mathcal{N}=4$ matter theories on a general class of three-dimensional manifolds. By means of equivariant localization, we identify a dual quantum mechanics computing BPS correlators of the original model in three dimensions. Specifically, applying the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne formula to the original action demonstrates that this localizes on a one-dimensional action with support on the fixed-point submanifold of suitable isometries. We first show that our approach reproduces previous results obtained on $S^3$. Then, we apply it to the novel case of $S^2 \times S^1$ and show that the theory localizes on two noninteracting quantum mechanics with disjoint support. We prove that the BPS operators of such models are naturally associated with a noncommutative star product, while their correlation functions are essentially topological. Finally, we couple the three-dimensional theory to general $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ surface defects and extend the localization computation to capture the full partition function and BPS correlators of the mixed-dimensional system.

Dual conformal invariance for form factors

Form factors of the stress-tensor multiplet operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills reveal surprisingly simple structures similar to those appearing in scattering amplitudes. In this paper we show that, as for the case of amplitudes, they also enjoy dual conformal symmetry. We compute the dual conformal anomaly at one loop for an arbitrary number of particles and generic helicities, which matches the expression of the dual conformal anomaly of amplitudes, and perform explicit checks for MHV and NMHV one-loop form factors. In the NMHV case the realisation of dual conformal symmetry requires a delicate cancellation of offending terms arising from three-mass triangles, which we explicitly check in the case of the four-point NMHV form factor.

Form factor recursion relations at loop level

We introduce a prescription to define form factor integrands at loop level in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This relies on a periodic kinematic configuration that has been instrumental to describe form factors at strong coupling in terms of periodic Wilson loops. With this prescription, we are able to formulate loop-level recursion relations for planar form factor integrands, using a two-line (BCFW) and an all-line shift. We also point out important differences with the known recursion relations of integrands of planar loop amplitudes. We present a number of concrete one-loop examples to illustrate and validate our prescription for form factor integrands.

Supersymmetric Wilson loops in two dimensions and duality

We classify bosonic $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Wilson loops on arbitrary backgrounds with vector-like R-symmetry. These can be defined on any smooth contour and come in two forms which are universal across all backgrounds. We show that these Wilson loops, thanks to their cohomological properties, are all invariant under smooth deformations of their contour. At genus zero they can always be mapped to local operators and computed exactly with supersymmetric localisation. Finally, we find the precise map, under two-dimensional Seiberg-like dualities, of correlators of supersymmetric Wilson loops.

Deconstructing Little Strings with $\mathcal{N}=1$ Gauge Theories on Ellipsoids

A formula was recently proposed for the perturbative partition function of certain $\mathcal N=1$ gauge theories on the round four-sphere, using an analytic-continuation argument in the number of dimensions. These partition functions are not currently accessible via the usual supersymmetric-localisation technique. We provide a natural refinement of this result to the case of the ellipsoid. We then use it to write down the perturbative partition function of an $\mathcal N=1$ toroidal-quiver theory (a double orbifold of $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills) and show that, in the deconstruction limit, it reproduces the zero-winding contributions to the BPS partition function of (1,1) Little String Theory wrapping an emergent torus. We therefore successfully test both the expressions for the $\mathcal N=1$ partition functions, as well as the relationship between the toroidal-quiver theory and Little String Theory through dimensional deconstruction.

The connected prescription for form factors in twistor space

We propose a connected prescription formula in twistor space for all tree-level form factors of the stress tensor multiplet operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills, which is a generalisation of the expression of Roiban, Spradlin and Volovich for superamplitudes. By introducing link variables, we show that our formula is identical to the recently proposed four-dimensional scattering equations for form factors. Similarly to the case of amplitudes, the link representation of form factors is shown to be directly related to BCFW recursion relations, and is considerably more tractable than the scattering equations. We also discuss how our results are related to a recent Grassmannian formulation of form factors, and comment on a possible derivation of our formula from ambitwistor strings.

Global equilibrium and local thermodynamics in stationary spacetimes

In stationary spacetimes global equilibrium states can be defined, applying the maximum entropy principle, by the introduction of local thermodynamic fields determined solely by geometry. As an example, we study a class of equilibrium states for a scalar field in Einstein's static universe, characterized by inhomogeneous thermodynamic properties and nonvanishing angular momentum.
