Two pathways to break the insulating state in a correlated transition metal oxide

Correlated transition metal oxides present exciting prospects as switches or memory and storage devices owing to the possibility to control electronic properties using various external stimuli. While their complex behaviour is known to stem from interplay between electronic correlations, atomic structure and orbital physics, they remain poorly understood on the microscopic level. Here, we investigate such origins as a function of temperature and pressure in the transition metal oxide Ti3O5. We find that the insulating room-temperature phase is characterized by one-dimensional zig-zag chains composed by two types of titanium dimers forming orbital selective valence bonds. At the thermal phase transition, one type of titanium dimer breaks up, resulting in an insulator to metal transition with a large orbital repopulation between the two states. Moreover, optical spectroscopy reveals that an additional pressure-driven insulator to metal transition occurs in Ti3O5 at room temperature. The phenomenology of this novel pressure-induced metallic transition is completely different from the insofar studied transitions and results from a competition between intra- and inter-dimer hopping. Our combined results suggest that Ti3O5 is a prototypical correlated transition metal oxide, where both correlations as well as orbital interactions need to be considered to fully understand the evolution of the electronic states.

Structural, magnetic and insulator-to-metal transitions under pressure in the GaV4S8 Mott insulator: A rich phase diagram up to 14.7 GPa

In addition to its promising potential for applications, GaV4S8 shows very interesting physical properties with temperature and magnetic field. These properties can be tuned by applying hydrostatic pressure in order to reveal and understand the physics of these materials. Not only pressure induces an insulator-to-metal transition in GaV4S8 but it also has an interesting effect on the structural and magnetic transitions. Using a combination of AC calorimetry, capacitance, and resistivity measurements under pressure, we determine the evolution of the structural and magnetic transitions with pressure and thus establish the T-P phase diagram of GaV4S8. To detect the insulator-to-metal transition, we use optical conductivity and DC resistivity measurements and we follow the evolution of the Mott gap under pressure. The structural transition temperature increases with pressure and a second transition appears above 6 GPa indicating a possible new phase with a very small gap. Pressure has surprisingly a very weak effect on the ferromagnetic transition that persists even very close to the IMT that occurs at around 14 GPa, implying that the metallic state may also be magnetic.

Identification of spin wave resonances and crystal field transitions in simple chromites RCrO3 (R=Pr, Sm, Er) at ultralow temperatures in the THz spectral region

We report on THz absorption spectroscopy combined with high magnetic fields of polycrystalline RCrO3 (R= Pr, Sm, Er) aiming understanding spin wave resonances at their low temperature magnetic phases. Our measurements show that the temperature, and the implicit anisotropies at which the Cr3+ spin reorientation at TSR takes place, are determinant on the ferromagnetic-like (FM) and the antiferromagnetic-like (AFM) spin modes being optically active. It is found that they are dependent on Rare Earth 4f moment and ion size. We also studied temperature and field dependence of crystal field levels in the same spectroscopic region. Pr3+ non-Kramers emerges at 100 K and Zeeman splits. An observed absence of spin wave resonances in PrCrO3 is attributed to Pr3+ remaining paramagnetic. In SmCrO3 near cancelation of the spin and orbital moments is proposed as the possible reason for not detecting Sm3+ ground state transitions. Here, the FM and AFM resonant modes harden when the temperature decreases and split linearly on applied fields at 5 K and below. In ErCrO3 the Er3+ Kramers doublet becomes active at about the TSR onset. Each line further experiences Zeeman splitting under magnetic fields while an spin reversal induced by a 2.5 T field, back to the Gamma4 (Fz) from the Gamma1 phase at 2 K, produces a secondary splitting. The 5 K AFM and FM excitations in ErCrO3 have a concerted frequency-intensity temperature dependence and a shoulder pointing to the Er3+ smaller ion size also disrupting the two magnetic sublattice approximation . Both resonances reduce to one when the temperature is lowered to 2 K in the Gamma1 representation.
