Burkholder inequalities for submartingales, Bessel processes and conformal martingales

The motivation for this paper comes from the following question on comparison of norms of conformal martingales $X$, $Y$ in $\R^d$, $d\geq 2$. Suppose that $Y$ is differentially subordinate to $X$. For $0 1$ is not an integer, which has further interesting applications to stopped Bessel processes and to the behavior of smooth functions on Euclidean domains. The inequality for conformal martingales, which has its roots on the study of the $L^p$ norms of the Beurling-Ahlfors singular integral operator \cite{BW}, extends a recent result of Borichev, Janakiraman and Volberg \cite{BJV2}.

Martingales and Sharp Bounds for Fourier multipliers

Using the argument of Geiss, Montgomery-Smith and Saksman \cite{GMSS}, and a new martingale inequality, the $L^p$--norms of certain Fourier multipliers in $\R^d$, $d\geq 2$, are identified. These include, among others, the second order Riesz transforms $R_j^2$, $j=1, 2,..., d$, and some of the Lévy multipliers studied in \cite{BBB}, \cite{BB}

Martingale transforms and their projection operators on manifolds

We prove the boundedness on $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, of operators on manifolds which arise by taking conditional expectation of transformations of stochastic integrals. These operators include various classical operators such as second order Riesz transforms and operators of Laplace transform-type.

The foundational inequalities of D.L. Burkholder and some of their ramifications

This paper present an overview of some of the applications of the martingale inequalities of D.L. Burkholder to $L^p$-bounds for singular integral operators, concentrating on the Hilbert transform, first and second order Riesz transforms, the Beurling-Ahlfors operator and other multipliers obtained by projections (conditional expectations) of transformations of stochastic integrals. While martingale inequalities can be used to prove the boundedness of a wider class of Calderón-Zygmund singular integrals, the aim of this paper is to show results which give optimal or near optimal bounds in the norms, hence our restriction to the above operators. Connections of Burkholder's foundational work on sharp martingale inequalities to other areas of mathematics where either the results themselves or techniques to prove them have become of considerable interest in recent years, are discussed. These include the 1952 conjecture of C.B. Morrey on rank-one convex and quasiconvex functions with connections to problems in the calculus of variations and the 1982 conjecture of T. Iwaniec on the $L^p$-norm of the Beurling-Ahlfors operator with connections to problems in the theory of qasiconformal mappings. Open questions, problems and conjectures are listed throughout the paper and copious references are provided.

Lévy processes and Fourier multipliers

We study Fourier multipliers which result from modulating jumps of Lévy processes. Using the theory of martingale transforms we prove that these operators are bounded in $L^p(\Rd)$ for $1<p<\infty$ and we obtain the same explicit bound for their norm as the one known for the second order Riesz transforms.
