Study of Sparsity-Aware Set-Membership Adaptive Algorithms with Adjustable Penalties

In this paper, we propose sparsity-aware data-selective adaptive filtering algorithms with adjustable penalties. Prior work incorporates a penalty function into the cost function used in the optimization that originates the algorithms to improve their performance by exploiting sparsity. However, the strength of the penalty function is controlled by a scalar that is often a fixed parameter. In contrast to prior work, we develop a framework to derive algorithms that automatically adjust the penalty function parameter and the step size to achieve a better performance. Simulations for a system identification application show that the proposed algorithms outperform in convergence speed existing sparsity-aware algorithms.

Study of Joint MSINR and Relay Selection Algorithms for Distributed Beamforming

This paper presents joint maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR) and relay selection algorithms for distributed beamforming. We propose a joint MSINR and restricted greedy search relay selection (RGSRS) algorithm with a total relay transmit power constraint that iteratively optimizes both the beamforming weights at the relays nodes, maximizing the SINR at the destination. Specifically, we devise a relay selection scheme that based on greedy search and compare it to other schemes like restricted random relay selection (RRRS) and restricted exhaustive search relay selection (RESRS). A complexity analysis is provided and simulation results show that the proposed joint MSINR and RGSRS algorithm achieves excellent bit error rate (BER) and SINR performances.

Study of Buffer-aided physical-layer network coding with ML and MMSE linear code designs for cooperative DS-CDMA systems

In this work, we propose buffer-aided physical-layer network coding (PLNC) techniques for cooperative direct-sequence code-division multiple access systems. In the proposed buffer-aided PLNC schemes, a relay pair selection algorithm is employed to obtain the relay pair and the packets in the buffer entries with the best performance and the associated link combinations used for data transmission. We also devise PLNC schemes based on the design of linear network coding matrices using maximum likelihood and minimum mean-square error criteria to generate the network coded symbols that are sent to the destination. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques significantly outperform prior art.

Sparsity-Based STAP Design Based on Alternating Direction Method with Gain/Phase Errors

We present a novel sparsity-based space-time adaptive processing (STAP) technique based on the alternating direction method to overcome the severe performance degradation caused by array gain/phase (GP) errors. The proposed algorithm reformulates the STAP problem as a joint optimization problem of the spatio-Doppler profile and GP errors in both single and multiple snapshots, and introduces a target detector using the reconstructed spatio-Doppler profiles. Simulations are conducted to illustrate the benefits of the proposed algorithm.

Widely-Linear Precoding for Large-Scale MIMO with IQI: Algorithms and Performance Analysis

In this paper we study widely-linear precoding techniques to mitigate in-phase/quadrature-phase (IQ) imbalance (IQI) in the downlink of large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We adopt a real-valued signal model which takes into account the IQI at the transmitter and then develop widely-linear zero-forcing (WL-ZF), widely-linear matched filter (WL-MF), widely-linear minimum mean-squared error (WL-MMSE) and widely-linear block-diagonalization (WL-BD) type precoding algorithms for both {\color{red} single- and multiple-antenna users.} We also present a performance analysis of WL-ZF and WL-BD. It is proved that without IQI, WL-ZF has exactly the same multiplexing gain and power offset as ZF, while when IQI exists, WL-ZF achieves the same multiplexing gain as ZF with ideal IQ branches, but with a minor power loss which is related to the system scale and the IQ parameters. We also compare the performance of WL-BD with BD. The analysis shows that with ideal IQ branches, WL-BD has the same data rate as BD, while when IQI exists, WL-BD achieves the same multiplexing gain as BD without IQ imbalance. Numerical results verify the analysis and show that the proposed widely-linear type precoding methods significantly outperform their conventional counterparts with IQI and approach those with ideal IQ branches.

Efficient Reduced-Rank DOA Estimation Algorithms Using Alternating Low-Rank Decompositions

In this work, we propose an alternating low-rank decomposition (ALRD) approach and novel subspace algorithms for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. In the ALRD scheme, the decomposition matrix for rank reduction is composed of a set of basis vectors. A low-rank auxiliary parameter vector is then employed to compute the output power spectrum. Alternating optimization strategies based on recursive least squares (RLS), denoted as ALRD-RLS and modified ALRD-RLS (MARLD-RLS), are devised to compute the basis vectors and the auxiliary parameter vector. Simulations for large sensor arrays with both uncorrelated and correlated sources are presented, showing that the proposed algorithms are superior to existing techniques.

Study of Sparsity-Aware Distributed Conjugate Gradient Algorithms for Sensor Networks

This paper proposes distributed adaptive algorithms based on the conjugate gradient (CG) method and the diffusion strategy for parameter estimation over sensor networks. We present sparsity-aware conventional and modified distributed CG algorithms using $l_{1}$ and log-sum penalty functions. The proposed sparsity-aware diffusion distributed CG algorithms have an improved performance in terms of mean square deviation (MSD) and convergence as compared with the consensus least-mean square (Diffusion-LMS) algorithm, the diffusion CG algorithms and a close performance to the diffusion distributed recursive least squares (Consensus-RLS) algorithm. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms are reliable and can be applied in several scenarios.

Low-Rank Signal Processing: Design, Algorithms for Dimensionality Reduction and Applications

We present a tutorial on reduced-rank signal processing, design methods and algorithms for dimensionality reduction, and cover a number of important applications. A general framework based on linear algebra and linear estimation is employed to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of reduced-rank signal processing and to describe how dimensionality reduction is performed on an observed discrete-time signal. A unified treatment of dimensionality reduction algorithms is presented with the aid of least squares optimization techniques, in which several techniques for designing the transformation matrix that performs dimensionality reduction are reviewed. Among the dimensionality reduction techniques are those based on the eigen-decomposition of the observed data vector covariance matrix, Krylov subspace methods, joint and iterative optimization (JIO) algorithms and JIO with simplified structures and switching (JIOS) techniques. A number of applications are then considered using a unified treatment, which includes wireless communications, sensor and array signal processing, and speech, audio, image and video processing. This tutorial concludes with a discussion of future research directions and emerging topics.

Iterative Detection and Decoding Algorithms using LDPC Codes for MIMO Systems in Block-Fading Channels

We propose iterative detection and decoding (IDD) algorithms with Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems operating in block-fading and fast Rayleigh fading channels. Soft-input soft-output minimum mean-square error receivers with successive interference cancellation are considered. In particular, we devise a novel strategy to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of IDD schemes, which takes into account the soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel when Root-Check LDPC codes are used. A MIMO IDD receiver with soft information processing that exploits the code structure and the behavior of the log likelihood ratios is also developed. Moreover, we present a scheduling algorithm for decoding LDPC codes in block-fading channels. Simulations show that the proposed techniques result in significant gains in terms of BER for both block-fading and fast-fading channels.

Adaptive Delay-Tolerant Distributed Space-Time Coding Based on Adjustable Code Matrices for Cooperative MIMO Relaying Systems

An adaptive delay-tolerant distributed space-time coding (DSTC) scheme that exploits feedback is proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. Maximum likelihood (ML) receivers and adjustable code matrices are considered subject to a power constraint with a decode-and-forward (DF) cooperation strategy. In the proposed delay-tolerant DSTC scheme, an adjustable code matrix is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay nodes. Least-squares (LS) algorithms are developed with reduced computational complexity to adjust the parameters of the codes. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms obtain significant performance gains and address the delay issue for cooperative MIMO systems as compared to existing delay-tolerant DSTC schemes.

Alternating Optimization Techniques for Power Allocation and Receiver Design in Multihop Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we consider a multihop wireless sensor network with multiple relay nodes for each hop where the amplify-and-forward scheme is employed. We present algorithmic strategies to jointly design linear receivers and the power allocation parameters via an alternating optimization approach subject to different power constraints which include global, local and individual ones. Two design criteria are considered: the first one minimizes the mean-square error and the second one maximizes the sum-rate of the wireless sensor network. We derive constrained minimum mean-square error and constrained maximum sum-rate expressions for the linear receivers and the power allocation parameters that contain the optimal complex amplification coefficients for each relay node. An analysis of the computational complexity and the convergence of the algorithms is also presented. Computer simulations show good performance of our proposed methods in terms of bit error rate and sum-rate compared to the method with equal power allocation and an existing power allocation scheme.

Set-Membership Adaptive Constant Modulus Algorithm with a Generalized Sidelobe Canceler and Dynamic Bounds for Beamforming

In this work, we propose an adaptive set-membership constant modulus (SM-CM) algorithm with a generalized sidelobe canceler (GSC) structure for blind beamforming. We develop a stochastic gradient (SG) type algorithm based on the concept of SM filtering for adaptive implementation. The filter weights are updated only if the constraint cannot be satisfied. In addition, we also propose an extension of two schemes of time-varying bounds for beamforming with a GSC structure and incorporate parameter and interference dependence to characterize the environment which improves the tracking performance of the proposed algorithm in dynamic scenarios. A convergence analysis of the proposed adaptive SM filtering techniques is carried out. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive SM-CM-GSC algorithm with dynamic bounds achieves superior performance to previously reported methods at a reduced update rate.

Adaptive Link Selection Strategies for Distributed Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks

In this work, we propose adaptive link selection strategies for distributed estimation in diffusion-type wireless networks. We develop an exhaustive search-based link selection algorithm and a sparsity-inspired link selection algorithm that can exploit the topology of networks with poor-quality links. In the exhaustive search-based algorithm, we choose the set of neighbors that results in the smallest excess mean square error (EMSE) for a specific node. In the sparsity-inspired link selection algorithm, a convex regularization is introduced to devise a sparsity-inspired link selection algorithm. The proposed algorithms have the ability to equip diffusion-type wireless networks and to significantly improve their performance. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithms have lower EMSE values, a better convergence rate and significantly improve the network performance when compared with existing methods.

Sparsity-Aware Adaptive Algorithms Based on Alternating Optimization with Shrinkage

This letter proposes a novel sparsity-aware adaptive filtering scheme and algorithms based on an alternating optimization strategy with shrinkage. The proposed scheme employs a two-stage structure that consists of an alternating optimization of a diagonally-structured matrix that speeds up the convergence and an adaptive filter with a shrinkage function that forces the coefficients with small magnitudes to zero. We devise alternating optimization least-mean square (LMS) algorithms for the proposed scheme and analyze its mean-square error. Simulations for a system identification application show that the proposed scheme and algorithms outperform in convergence and tracking existing sparsity-aware algorithms.

Distributed Iterative Detection Based on Reduced Message Passing for Networked MIMO Cellular Systems

This paper considers base station cooperation (BSC) strategies for the uplink of a multi-user multi-cell high frequency reuse scenario where distributed iterative detection (DID) schemes with soft/hard interference cancellation algorithms are studied. The conventional distributed detection scheme exchanges {soft symbol estimates} with all cooperating BSs. Since a large amount of information needs to be shared via the backhaul, the exchange of hard bit information is preferred, however a performance degradation is experienced. In this paper, we consider a reduced message passing (RMP) technique in which each BS generates a detection list with the probabilities for the desired symbol that are sorted according to the calculated probability. The network then selects the best {detection candidates} from the lists and conveys the index of the constellation symbols (instead of double-precision values) among the cooperating cells. The proposed DID-RMP achieves an inter-cell-interference (ICI) suppression with low backhaul traffic overhead compared with {the conventional soft bit exchange} and outperforms the previously reported hard/soft information exchange algorithms.

Knowledge-Aided STAP Using Low Rank and Geometry Properties

This paper presents knowledge-aided space-time adaptive processing (KA-STAP) algorithms that exploit the low-rank dominant clutter and the array geometry properties (LRGP) for airborne radar applications. The core idea is to exploit the fact that the clutter subspace is only determined by the space-time steering vectors, {red}{where the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization approach is employed to compute the clutter subspace. Specifically, for a side-looking uniformly spaced linear array, the} algorithm firstly selects a group of linearly independent space-time steering vectors using LRGP that can represent the clutter subspace. By performing the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, the orthogonal bases of the clutter subspace are obtained, followed by two approaches to compute the STAP filter weights. To overcome the performance degradation caused by the non-ideal effects, a KA-STAP algorithm that combines the covariance matrix taper (CMT) is proposed. For practical applications, a reduced-dimension version of the proposed KA-STAP algorithm is also developed. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, and show that the proposed algorithms converge rapidly and provide a SINR improvement over existing methods when using a very small number of snapshots.

Robust Adaptive Beamforming Based on Low-Complexity Shrinkage-Based Mismatch Estimation

In this work, we propose a low-complexity robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) technique which estimates the steering vector using a Low-Complexity Shrinkage-Based Mismatch Estimation (LOCSME) algorithm. The proposed LOCSME algorithm estimates the covariance matrix of the input data and the interference-plus-noise covariance (INC) matrix by using the Oracle Approximating Shrinkage (OAS) method. LOCSME only requires prior knowledge of the angular sector in which the actual steering vector is located and the antenna array geometry. LOCSME does not require a costly optimization algorithm and does not need to know extra information from the interferers, which avoids direction finding for all interferers. Simulations show that LOCSME outperforms previously reported RAB algorithms and has a performance very close to the optimum.
