Characterization of Non-Deterministic Chaos in Two-Dimensional Non-Smooth Vector Fields

Our context is Filippov systems defined on two-dimensional manifolds having a finite number of tangency points. We prove that topological transitivity is a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of non-deterministic chaos when the Filippov system has non-empty sliding or escaping regions. A fundamental result for continuous flows is the equivalence of topological transitivity and existence of a dense orbit. We prove in our setting that topological transitivity for Filippov systems is indeed equivalent to the existence of a dense Filippov orbit, although, in contrast to the continuous case, we are not able to garantee that the dense orbit implies the existence of a residual set of dense orbits. Finally we prove that, in this context, topological transitivity implies strictly positive topological entropy for the Filippov system. This calculation is made using techniques similar to those from symbolic dynamics.

Limit sets of discontinuous vector fields on two-dimensional manifolds

In this paper the asymptotic behavior of trajectories of discontinuous vector fields is studied. The vector fields are defined on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ and the confinement of trajectories on some suitable compact set $K$ of $M$ is assumed. The behavior of the global trajectories is fully analyzed and their limit sets are classified. The presence of limit sets having non-empty interior is observed. Moreover, the existence of the so called sliding motion is allowed on $M$. The results contemplate a list of possible limit sets as well the existence of non-recurrent dynamics and the presence of nondeterministic chaos. Some examples and classes of systems fitting the hypotheses of the main theorems are also provided in the paper.

Invariant manifolds for piecewise smooth differential systems in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$

In this paper some piecewise smooth perturbations of a three-dimensional differential system are considered. The existence of invariant manifolds filled by periodic orbits is obtained after suitable small perturbations of the original differential system. These manifolds emerge from a continuum of cylinders of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which does exist for the piecewise smooth differential systems after a rotation of some planar algebraic polynomial curves. The main tool used in order to obtain the results is the averaging theory for piecewise smooth differential systems.

Lower bounds for the number of limit cycles in a generalized Rayleigh-Liénard oscillator

In this paper a generalized Rayleigh-Liénard oscillator is consider and lower bounds for the number of limit cycles bifurcating from weak focus equilibria and saddle connections are provided. By assuming some open conditions on the parameters of the considered system the existence of up to twelve limit cycles is provided. More precisely, the approach consists in perform suitable changes in the sign of some specific parameters and apply Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for assure the existence of limit cycles. In particular, the method for obtaining the limit cycles through the referred approach is explicitly exhibited. The main techniques applied in this study are the Lyapunov constants and the Melnikov method.

On the number of limit cycles in discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems with two pieces separated by a straight line

In this paper we study the maximum number $N$ of limit cycles that can exhibit a planar piecewise linear differential system formed by two pieces separated by a straight line. More precisely, we prove that this maximum number satisfies $2\leq N \leq 3$ if one of the two linear differential systems has its equilibrium point on the straight line of discontinuity.

On Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem and Non-Trivial Minimal Sets in Planar Nonsmooth Vector Fields

In this paper some qualitative and geometric aspects of nonsmooth vector fields theory are discussed. In the class of nonsmooth systems, that do not present sliding regions, a Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem is presented. A minimal set in planar Filippov systems not predicted in classical Poincaré-Bendixson theory and whose interior is non-empty is exhibited. The concepts of limit sets, recurrence and minimal sets for nonsmooth systems are defined and compared with the classical ones. Moreover some differences between them are pointed out.
