Boundary Modes in the Chamon Model

We study the fracton phase described by the Chamon model in a manifold with a boundary. The new processes and excitations emerging at the boundary can be understood by means of a diagrammatic framework. From a continuum perspective, the boundary theory is described by a set of scalar fields in similarity with the standard $K$-matrix Chern-Simons theory. The continuum theory recovers the gapped boundaries of the lattice model once we include sufficiently strong interactions that break charge conservation. The analysis of the perturbative relevance of the leading interactions reveals a regime in which the Chamon model can have a stable gapless fractonic phase at its boundary.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of Majorana zero modes in a Kitaev spin liquid

We describe scanning tunneling spectroscopic signatures of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in Kitaev spin liquids. The tunnel conductance is determined by the dynamical spin correlations of the spin liquid, which we compute exactly, and by spin-anisotropic cotunneling form factors. Near a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex, the tunnel conductance has a staircase voltage dependence, where conductance steps arise from MZMs and (at higher voltages) from additional vortex configurations. By scanning the probe tip position, one can detect the vortex locations. Our analysis suggests that topological magnon bound states near defects or magnetic impurities generate spectroscopic signatures that are qualitatively different from those of MZMs.

Quench dynamics of the Kondo effect: transport across an impurity coupled to interacting wires

We study the real-time dynamics of the Kondo effect after a quantum quench in which a magnetic impurity is coupled to two metallic Hubbard chains. Using an effective field theory approach, we find that for noninteracting electrons the charge current across the impurity is given by a scaling function that involves the Kondo time. In the interacting case, we show that the Kondo time decreases with the strength of the repulsive interaction and the time dependence of the current reveals signatures of the Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid. In addition, we verify that the relaxation of the impurity magnetization does not exhibit universal scaling behavior in the perturbative regime below the Kondo time. Our results highlight the role of nonequilibrium dynamics as a valuable tool in the study of quantum impurities in interacting systems.

Chiral fixed point in a junction of critical spin-1 chains

Junctions of one-dimensional systems are of great interest to the development of synthetic materials that harbor topological phases. We study a junction of three gapless spin-1 chains described by the $\mathrm{SU(2)}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Wittten model and coupled by exchange and chiral three-spin interactions. We show that a chiral fixed point appears as a special point on the transition line separating two regimes described by open boundary conditions, corresponding to decoupled chains and the formation of a boundary spin singlet state. Along this transition line, the junction behaves as a tunable spin circulator as the spin conductance varies continuously with the coupling constant of a marginal boundary operator. Since the spectrum of the junction contains fractional excitations such as Majorana fermions, in this paper, we set the stage for network constructions of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids.

Noncoplanar magnetic orders and gapless chiral spin liquid on the kagome lattice with staggered scalar spin chirality

Chiral three-spin interactions can suppress long-range magnetic order and stabilize quantum spin liquid states in frustrated lattices. We study a spin-1/2 model on the kagome lattice involving a staggered three-spin interaction $J_χ$ in addition to Heisenberg exchange couplings $J_1$ on nearest-neighbor bonds and $J_d$ across the diagonals of the hexagons. We explore the phase diagram using a combination of a classical approach, parton mean-field theory, and variational Monte Carlo methods. We obtain a variety of noncoplanar magnetic orders, including a phase that interpolates between cuboc-1 and cuboc-2 states. In the regime of dominant $J_χ$, we find a classically disordered region and argue that it may harbor a gapless chiral spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface. Our results show that the competition between the staggered three-spin interaction and Heisenberg exchange interactions gives rise to unusual ground states of spin systems.

Continuous phase transition from a chiral spin state to collinear magnetic order in a zigzag chain with Kitaev interactions

Quantum spin systems can break time reversal symmetry by developing spontaneous magnetization or spin chirality. However, collinear magnets and chiral spin states are invariant under different symmetries, implying that the order parameter of one phase vanishes in the other. We show how to construct one-dimensional anisotropic spin models that exhibit a "Landau-forbidden" continuous phase transition between such states. As a concrete example, we focus on a zigzag chain with bond-dependent exchange and six-spin interactions. Using a combination of exact solutions, effective field theories, and numerical simulations, we show that the transition between the chiral and magnetic phases has an emergent U(1) symmetry. The excitations governing the transition from the chiral phase can be pictured as mobile defects in a $\mathbb Z_2$ flux configuration which bind fermionic modes. We briefly discuss extensions to two dimensions and analogies with deconfined quantum criticality. Our results suggest new prospects for unconventional phase transitions involving chiral spin states.

Phonon-limited Transport and Fermi Arc Lifetime in Weyl Semimetals

Weyl semimetals harbor topological Fermi-arc surface states which determine the nontrivial charge current response to external fields. We here study the quasiparticle decay rate of Fermi arc states arising from their coupling to acoustic phonons, as well as the phonon-limited conductivity tensor for a clean Weyl semimetal slab. Using the phonon modes for an isotropic elastic continuum with a deformation potential coupling to electrons, we determine the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle decay rate, both near and far away from the arc termination points. By solving the coupled Boltzmann equations for the bulk and arc state distribution functions in the slab geometry, we show how the linear response conductivity depends on key parameters such as the temperature, the chemical potential, the geometric shape of the Fermi arcs, or the slab width. The chiral nature of Fermi arc states causes an enhancement of the longitudinal conductivity along the chiral direction at low temperatures, together with a 1/T^2 scaling regime at intermediate temperatures without counterpart for the conductivity along the perpendicular direction.

Gapless excitations in non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquids with line defects

We show that line defects in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid harbor gapless one-dimensional Majorana modes if the interaction across the defect falls below a critical value. Treating the weak interaction at the line defect within a mean-field approximation, we determine the critical interaction strength as a function of the external magnetic field. In the gapless regime, we use the low-energy effective field theory to calculate the spin-lattice relaxation rate for a nuclear spin near the defect and find a cubic temperature dependence that agrees with experiments in the Kitaev material $α\text{-RuCl}_3$.

Fractons from a liquid of singlet pairs

Fracton phases of matter feature a variety of exciting phenomena stemming from the restricted mobility of their quasiparticles. Here we consider a model of interacting electrons in one dimension that describes hopping of spin-singlet pairs and obeys both charge and dipole conservation laws. The model contains Bethe ansatz integrable sectors which allow us to solve the ground state and calculate the exact spin and single-electron excitation gaps. We observe hallmarks of fractonic behavior, including localization of single-electron excitations and propensity to clustering. Our results demonstrate the important role of the dipole moment conservation law in a simple model of spin-1/2 fermions.

Electrical Access to Ising Anyons in Kitaev Spin Liquids

We show that spin-spin correlations in a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid are associated with a characteristic inhomogeneous charge density distribution in the vicinity of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices. This density profile and the corresponding local electric fields are observable, e.g., by means of surface probe techniques. Conversely, by applying bias voltages to several probe tips, one can stabilize Ising anyons ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices harboring a Majorana zero mode) at designated positions, where we predict a clear Majorana signature in energy absorption spectroscopy.

Quadrupolar spin liquid, octupolar Kondo coupling and odd-frequency superconductivity in an exactly solvable model

We propose an exactly solvable model for $j_{\text{eff}}=\frac32$ local moments on the honeycomb lattice. Our construction is guided by a symmetry analysis and by the requirement of an exact solution in terms of a Majorana fermion representation for multipole operators. The main interaction in the model can be interpreted as a bond-dependent quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. When time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, we obtain a gapped spin liquid with a single chiral Majorana edge mode. We also investigate another solvable model in which the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid is coupled to conduction electrons in a superconductor. In the presence of a Kondo-like coupling that involves the octupole moment of the localized spins, the itinerant electrons hybridize with the emergent Majorana fermions in the spin liquid. This leads to spontaneous time reversal symmetry breaking and generates odd-frequency pairing. Our results suggest that $j_{\text{eff}}=\frac32$ systems with strong quadrupole-quadrupole interactions may provide a route towards non-Abelian quantum spin liquids and unconventional superconductivity.

Confinement and bound states of bound states in a transverse-field two-leg Ising ladder

Weakly coupled Ising chains provide a condensed-matter realization of confinement. In these systems, kinks and antikinks bind into mesons due to an attractive interaction potential that increases linearly with the distance between the particles. While single mesons have been directly observed in experiments, the role of the multiparticle continuum and bound states of mesons in the excitation spectrum is far less clear. Using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group methods, we study the dynamical structure factors of one- and two-spin operators in a transverse-field two-leg Ising ladder in the ferromagnetic phase. The propagation of time-dependent correlations and the two-spin excitation spectrum reveal the existence of interchain bound states, which are absent in the one-spin dynamical structure factor. We also identify two-meson bound states that appear at higher energies, above the thresholds of several two-meson continua.

Bound states in two-dimensional Fermi systems with quadratic band touching

The formation of bound states between mobile impurity particles and fermionic atoms has been demonstrated in spin-polarized Fermi gases with attractive interspecies interaction. We investigate bound states of mobile impurities immersed in a two-dimensional system with a symmetry-protected quadratic band touching. In addition to the standard s-wave interaction, we consider an anisotropic dipolar exchange interaction that locally breaks point group symmetries. Using a weak-coupling renormalization group approach and a ladder approximation for the impurity-fermion propagator, we establish that the number of bound states can be controlled by varying the anisotropy of the exchange interaction. Our results show that the degeneracy and momentum dependence of the binding energies reflect some distinctive properties of the quadratic band touching.

Spin chain network construction of chiral spin liquids

We show that a honeycomb lattice of Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chains with three-spin junction interactions allows for controlled analytical studies of chiral spin liquids (CSLs). Tuning these interactions to a chiral fixed point, we find a Kalmeyer-Laughlin CSL phase which here is connected to the critical point of a boundary conformal field theory. Our construction directly yields a quantized spin Hall conductance and localized spinons with semionic statistics as elementary excitations. We also outline the phase diagram away from the chiral point where spinons may condense. Generalizations of our approach can provide microscopic realizations for many other CSLs.

Superconductivity from piezoelectric interactions in Weyl semimetals

We present an analytical low-energy theory of piezoelectric electron-phonon interactions in undoped Weyl semimetals, taking into account also Coulomb interactions. We show that piezoelectric interactions generate a long-range attractive potential between Weyl fermions. This potential comes with a characteristic angular anisotropy. From the one-loop renormalization group approach and a mean-field analysis, we predict that superconducting phases with either conventional s-wave singlet pairing or nodal-line triplet pairing could be realized for sufficiently strong piezoelectric coupling. For small couplings, we show that the quasi-particle decay rate exhibits a linear temperature dependence where the prefactor vanishes only in a logarithmic manner as the quasi-particle energy approaches the Weyl point. For practical estimates, we consider the Weyl semimetal TaAs.

SU(4)-symmetric spin-orbital liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice

We study the effective spin-orbital model that describes the magnetism of 4$d^1$ or 5$d^1$ Mott insulators in ideal tricoordinated lattices. In the limit of vanishing Hund's coupling, the model has an emergent SU(4) symmetry which is made explicit by means of a Klein transformation on pseudospin degrees of freedom. Taking the hyperhoneycomb lattice as an example, we employ parton constructions with fermionic representations of the pseudospin operators to investigate possible quantum spin-orbital liquid states. We then use variational Monte Carlo (VMC) methods to compute the energies of the projected wave functions. Our numerical results show that the lowest-energy quantum liquid corresponds to a zero-flux state with a Fermi surface of four-color fermionic partons. In spite of the Fermi surface, we demonstrate that this state is stable against tetramerization. A combination of linear flavor wave theory and VMC applied to the complete microscopic model also shows that this liquid state is stable against the formation of collinear long-range order.

Dynamical structure factors in the nematic phase of frustrated ferromagnetic spin chains

Frustrated spin systems can show phases with spontaneous breaking of spin-rotational symmetry without the formation of local magnetic order. We study the dynamic response of the spin-nematic phase of one-dimensional spin-1/2 systems, characterized by slow large-distance decay of quadrupolar correlations, by numerically computing one-spin and two-spin dynamical structure factors at zero temperature using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group methods. We interpret the results in terms of an effective theory of gapped magnon excitations interacting with a quasi-condensate of bound magnon pairs. This employs an extension of the well-known Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory which includes the magnon states as a mobile impurity. A good qualitative understanding of the characteristic thresholds and their intensity in the structure factors is obtained this way. Our results are useful in the interpretation of inelastic neutron scattering and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments.

Kondo effect in a parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

The combination of non-Hermitian physics and strong correlations can give rise to new effects in open quantum many-body systems with balanced gain and loss. We propose a generalized Anderson impurity model that includes non-Hermitian hopping terms between an embedded quantum dot and two wires. These non-Hermitian hopping terms respect a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. In the regime of a singly occupied localized state, we map the problem to a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Kondo model and study the effects of the interactions using a perturbative renormalization group approach. We find that the Kondo effect persists if the couplings are below a critical value that corresponds to an exceptional point of the non-Hermitian Kondo interaction. On the other hand, in the regime of spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the Kondo effect is suppressed and the low-energy properties are governed by a local-moment fixed point with vanishing conductance.
