Vacuum Degeneracy and Conformal Mass in Lovelock AdS Gravity

It is shown that the notion of Conformal Mass can be defined within a given anti-de Sitter (AdS) branch of a Lovelock gravity theory as long as the corresponding vacuum is not degenerate. Indeed, conserved charges obtained by the addition of Kounterterms to the bulk action turn out to be proportional to the electric part of the Weyl tensor, when the fall-off of a generic solution in that AdS branch is considered. The factor of proportionality is the degeneracy condition for the vacua in the particular Lovelock AdS theory under study. This last feature explains the obstruction to define Conformal Mass in the degenerate case.

Holographic correlation functions in Critical Gravity

We compute the holographic stress tensor and the logarithmic energy-momentum tensor of Einstein-Weyl gravity at the critical point. This computation is carried out performing a holographic expansion in a bulk action supplemented by the Gauss-Bonnet term with a fixed coupling. The renormalization scheme defined by the addition of this topological term has the remarkable feature that all Einstein modes are identically cancelled both from the action and its variation. Thus, what remains comes from a nonvanishing Bach tensor, which accounts for non-Einstein modes associated to logarithmic terms which appear in the expansion of the metric. In particular, we compute the holographic $1$-point functions for a generic boundary geometric source.

Constant curvature black holes in Einstein AdS gravity: conserved quantities

We study physical properties of constant curvature black holes (CCBHs) in Einstein anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity. These objects, which are locally AdS throughout the space, are constructed from identifications of global AdS spacetime, in a similar fashion as Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in three dimensions. We find that, in dimensions equal or greater than four, CCBHs have zero mass and angular momentum. Only in odd dimensions we are able to associate a nonvanishing conserved quantity to these solutions, which corresponds to the vacuum (Casimir) energy of the spacetime.

Vacuum energy in asymptotically flat 2+1 gravity

We compute the vacuum energy of three-dimensional asymptotically flat space based on a Chern-Simons formulation for the Poincare group. The equivalent action is nothing but the Einstein-Hilbert term in the bulk plus half of the Gibbons-Hawking term at the boundary. The derivation is based on the evaluation of the Noether charges in the vacuum. We obtain that the vacuum energy of this space has the same value as the one of the asymptotically flat limit of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space.

From conformal to Einstein Gravity

We provide a simple derivation of the equivalence between Einstein and Conformal Gravity (CG) with Neumann boundary conditions given by Maldacena. As Einstein spacetimes are Bach flat, a generic solution to CG would contain both Einstein and non-Einstein part. Using this decomposition of the spacetime curvature in the Weyl tensor, makes manifest the equivalence between the two theories, both at the level of the action and the variation of it. As a consequence, we show that the on-shell action for Critical Gravity in four dimensions is given uniquely in terms of the Bach tensor.

Magnetic Mass in 4D AdS Gravity

We provide a fully-covariant expression for the diffeomorphic charge in 4D anti-de Sitter gravity, when the Gauss-Bonnet and Pontryagin terms are added to the action. The couplings of these topological invariants are such that the Weyl tensor and its dual appear in the on-shell variation of the action, and such that the action is stationary for asymptotic (anti) self-dual solutions in the Weyl tensor. In analogy with Euclidean electromagnetism, whenever the self-duality condition is global, both the action and the total charge are identically vanishing. Therefore, for such configurations the magnetic mass equals the Ashtekhar-Magnon-Das definition.

Conformal mass in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity

In this paper, we show that the physical information given by conserved charges for asymptotically AdS spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is encoded in the electric part of the Weyl tensor. This result generalizes the conformal mass definition by Ashtekar-Magnon-Das (AMD) to a gravity theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term. This proof makes use of the Noether charges obtained from an action renormalized by the addition of counterterms which depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms). If the asymptotic fall-off behaviour of the Weyl tensor is same as the one considered in the AMD method, then the Kounterterm charges and the AMD charges agree in any dimension.

Renormalized AdS action and Critical Gravity

It is shown that the renormalized action for AdS gravity in even spacetime dimensions is equivalent -on shell- to a polynomial of the Weyl tensor, whose first non-vanishing term is proportional to $Weyl^2$. Remarkably enough, the coupling of this last term coincides with the one that appears in Critical Gravity.

Conformal Mass in AdS gravity

We show that the Ashtekar-Magnon-Das (AMD) mass and other conserved quantities are equivalent to the Kounterterm charges in the asymptotically AdS spacetimes that satisfy the Einstein equations, if we assume the same asymptotic fall-off behavior of the Weyl tensor as considered by AMD. This therefore implies that, in all dimensions, the conformal mass can be directly derived from the bulk action and the boundary terms, which are written in terms of the extrinsic curvature.

Vacuum energy in Kerr-AdS black holes

We compute the vacuum energy for Kerr black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics in dimensions $5\leq D\leq 9$ with all rotation parameters. The calculations are carried out employing an alternative regularization scheme for asymptotically AdS gravity, which considers supplementing the bulk action with counterterms which are a given polynomial in the extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of the boundary (also known as Kounterterms). The Kerr-Schild form of the rotating solutions enables us to identify the vacuum energy as coming from the part of the metric that corresponds to global AdS spacetime written in oblate spheroidal coordinates. We find that the zero-point energy for higher-dimensional Kerr-AdS reduces to the one of Schwarzschild-AdS black hole when all the rotation parameters are equal to each other, fact that is well-known in five dimensions. We also sketch a compact expression for the vacuum energy formula in terms of asymptotic quantities that might be useful to extend the computations to higher odd dimensions.

Holography in 3D AdS gravity with torsion

Basic aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence are studied in the framework of 3-dimensional gravity with torsion. After choosing a consistent holographic ansatz, we formulate an improved approach to the Noether--Ward identities for the boundary theory. The method is applied first to the topological Mielke--Baekler model, and then to the more interesting (parity-preserving) 3-dimensional gravity with propagating torsion. In both cases, we find the finite holographic energy-momentum and spin currents and obtain the associated (anomalous) Noether--Ward identities.

Attractor horizons in six-dimensional type IIB supergravity

We consider near horizon geometries of extremal black holes in six-dimensional type IIB supergravity. In particular, we use the entropy function formalism to compute the charges and thermodynamic entropy of these solutions. We also comment on the role of attractor mechanism in understanding the entropy of the Hopf T-dual solutions in type IIA supergravity.

Quantum Statistical Relation for black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics coupled to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity

We consider curvature-squared corrections to Einstein-Hilbert gravity action in the form of Gauss-Bonnet term in D>4 dimensions. In this theory, we study the thermodynamics of charged static black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics, and whose electric field is described by nonlinear electrodynamics (NED). These objects have received considerable attention in recent literature on gravity/gauge dualities. It is well-known that, within the framework of anti de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, there exists a nonvanishing Casimir contribution to the internal energy of the system, manifested as the vacuum energy for global AdS spacetime in odd dimensions. Because of this reason, we derive a Quantum Statistical Relation directly from the Euclidean action and not from the integration of the First Law of thermodynamics. To this end, we employ a background-independent regularization scheme which consists in the addition to the bulk action of counterterms that depend on both extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures of the boundary (Kounterterm series). This procedure results in a consistent inclusion of the vacuum energy and chemical potential in the thermodynamic description for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity regardless the explicit form of the NED Lagrangian.

Conserved charges for black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics in AdS space

Motivated by possible applications within the framework of anti-de Sitter gravity/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, charged black holes with AdS asymptotics, which are solutions to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in D dimensions, and whose electric field is described by a nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) are studied. For a topological static black hole ansatz, the field equations are exactly solved in terms of the electromagnetic stress tensor for an arbitrary NED Lagrangian, in any dimension D and for arbitrary positive values of Gauss-Bonnet coupling. In particular, this procedure reproduces the black hole metric in Born-Infeld and conformally invariant electrodynamics previously found in the literature. Altogether, it extends to D>4 the four-dimensional solution obtained by Soleng in logarithmic electrodynamics, which comes from vacuum polarization effects. Fall-off conditions for the electromagnetic field that ensure the finiteness of the electric charge are also discussed. The black hole mass and vacuum energy as conserved quantities associated to an asymptotic timelike Killing vector are computed using a background-independent regularization of the gravitational action based on the addition of counterterms which are a given polynomial in the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures.

Background-independent charges in Topologically Massive Gravity

We construct background-independent Noether charges in Topologically Massive Gravity with negative cosmological constant using its first-order formulation. The procedure is carried out by keeping track of the surface terms in the variation of the action, regardless the value of the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling $μ$. In particular, this method provides a definition of conserved quantities for solutions at the chiral point $μl = 1$ ($l$ is the AdS radius) that contain logarithmic terms (Log Gravity). It is also shown that the charge formula gives a finite result for warped AdS black holes without the need for any background-substraction procedure.

Topological regularization and self-duality in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity

It is shown that the addition of a topological invariant (Gauss-Bonnet term) to the anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity action in four dimensions recovers the standard regularization given by holographic renormalization procedure. This crucial step makes possible the inclusion of an odd parity invariant (Pontryagin term) whose coupling is fixed by demanding an asymptotic (anti) self-dual condition on the Weyl tensor. This argument allows to find the dual point of the theory where the holographic stress tensor is related to the boundary Cotton tensor as $T_{j}^{i}=\pm (\ell ^{2}/8πG)C_{j}^{i}$, which has been observed in recent literature in solitonic solutions and hydrodynamic models. A general procedure to generate the counterterm series for AdS gravity in any even dimension from the corresponding Euler term is also briefly discussed.

Universal Kounterterms in Lovelock AdS gravity

We show the universal form of the boundary term (Kounterterm series) which regularizes the Euclidean action and background-independent definition of conserved quantities for any Lovelock gravity theory with AdS asymptotics (including Einstein-Hilbert and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet). We discuss on the connection of this procedure to the existence of topological invariants and Chern-Simons forms in the corresponding dimensions.

Thermodynamics of Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes with negative cosmological constant

We study the thermodynamics associated to topological black hole solutions of AdS gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (Born-Infeld) in any dimension, using a background-independent regularization prescription for the Euclidean action given by boundary terms which explicitly depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms series). A finite action principle leads to the correct definition of thermodynamic variables as Noether charges, which satisfy a Smarr-like relation. In particular, for the odd-dimensional case, a consistent thermodynamic description is achieved if the internal energy of the system includes the vacuum energy for AdS spacetime.
