Logarithmic laws and unique ergodicity

We show that Masur's logarithmic law of geodesics in the moduli space of translation surfaces does not imply unique ergodicity of the translation flow, but that a similar law involving the flat systole of a Teichmüller geodesic does imply unique ergodicity. It shows that the flat geometry has a better control on ergodic properties of translation flow than hyperbolic geometry.

Flat surfaces, Bratteli diagrams, and unique ergodicity à la Masur

Recalling the construction of a flat surface from a Bratteli diagram, this paper considers the dynamics of the shift map on the space of all bi-infinite Bratteli diagrams as the renormalizing dynamics on a moduli space of flat surfaces of finite area. A criterion of unique ergodicity similar to that of Masur's for flat surface holds: if there is a subsequence of the renormalizing dynamical system which has a good accumulation point, the translation flow or Bratteli-Vershik transformation is uniquely ergodic. Related questions are explored.

Flat surface models of ergodic systems

We propose a general framework for constructing and describing infinite type flat surfaces of finite area. Using this method, we characterize the range of dynamical behaviors possible for the vertical translation flows on such flat surfaces. We prove a sufficient condition for ergodicity of this flow and apply the condition to several examples. We present specific examples of infinite type flat surfaces on which the translation flow exhibits dynamical phenomena not realizable by translation flows on finite type flat surfaces.

On the Ergodicity of Flat Surfaces of Finite Area

We prove some ergodic theorems for flat surfaces of finite area. The first result concerns such surfaces whose Teichmuller orbits are recurrent to a compact subset of $SL(2;R)/SL(S)$, where $SL(S)$ is the Veech group of the surface. In this setting, this means that the translation flow on a flat surface can be renormalized through its Veech group to reveal ergodic properties of the translation flow. This result applies in particular to flat surfaces of infinite genus and finite area. Our second result is an criterion for ergodicity based on the control of deforming metric of a flat surface. Applied to translation flows on compact surfaces, it improves and generalizes a theorem of Cheung and Eskin.

On the Non-Uniform Hyperbolicity of the Kontsevich-Zorich Cocycle for Quadratic Differentials

We prove the non-uniform hyperbolicity of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle for a measure supported on abelian differentials which come from non-orientable quadratic differentials through a standard orientating, double cover construction. The proof uses Forni's criterion for non-uniform hyperbolicity of the cocycle for SL(2,R)-invariant measures. We apply these results to the study of deviations in homology of typical leaves of the vertical and horizontal (non-orientable) foliations and deviations of ergodic averages.

Efficient automation of index pairs in computational Conley index theory

We present new methods of automating the construction of index pairs, essential ingredients of discrete Conley index theory. These new algorithms are further steps in the direction of automating computer-assisted proofs of semi-conjugacies from a map on a manifold to a subshift of finite type. We apply these new algorithms to the standard map at different values of the perturbative parameter ε and obtain rigorous lower bounds for its topological entropy for ε in [.7, 2].
