Quivers and Poisson structures

We produce natural quadratic Poisson structures on moduli spaces of representations of quivers. In particular, we study a natural Poisson structure for the generalised Kronecker quiver with 3 arrows.

Pluricomplex geometry and hyperbolic monopoles

Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary quaternions. We still require, however, that the 2-sphere of complex structures determines a decomposition of the complexified tangent space as tensor product of C^{2n} and C^2. Among interesting properties of pluricomplex manifold is the existence of a canonical torsion free connection. Pluricomplex manifolds have also remarkable twistor theory: they parameterise algebraic curves of higher genera.

On the symplectic structure of instanton moduli spaces

We study the complex symplectic structure of the quiver varieties corresponding to the moduli spaces of SU(2) instantons on both commutative and non-commutative R^4. We identify global Darboux coordinates and quadratic Hamiltonians on classical phase spaces for which these quiver varieties are natural completions. We also show that the group of non-commutative symplectomorphisms of the corresponding path algebra acts transitively on the moduli spaces of non-commutative instantons. This paper should be viewed as a step towards extending known results for Calogero-Moser spaces to the instanton moduli spaces.

Line bundles on spectral curves and the generalised Legendre transform construction of hyperkaehler metrics

An analogue of the correspondence between GL(k)-conjugacy classes of matricial polynomials and line bundles is given for K-conjugacy classes, where K is one of the following: maximal parabolic, maximal torus, GL(k-1) embedded diagonally. The generalised Legendre transform construction of hyperkaehler metrics is studied further, showing that many known hyperkaehler metrics (including the ones on coadjoint orbits) arise in this way, and giving a large class of new (pseudo-)hyperkaehler metrics, analogous to monopole metrics.

Monopoles and clusters

We define and study certain hyperkaehler manifolds which capture the asymptotic behaviour of the SU(2)-monopole metric in regions where monopoles break down into monopoles of lower charges. The rate at which these new metrics approximate the monopole metric is exponential, as for the Gibbons-Manton metric.

Curvature of hyperkaehler quotients

We prove estimates for the sectional curvature of hyperkaehler quotients and give applications to moduli spaces of solutions to Nahm's equations and Hitchin's equations.

Gelfand-Zeitlin actions and rational maps

We observe that the analogue of the Gelfand-Zeitlin action on gl(n,C), which exists on any symplectic manifold M with an Hamiltonian action of GL(n,C), has a natural interpretation as a residual action, after we identify M with a symplectic quotient of the product of M with T*GL(n-1,C)x...xT*GL(1,C). We also show that the Gelfand-Zeitlin actions on T*GL(n,C) and on the regular part of gl(n,C) can be identified with natural Hamiltonian actions on spaces of rational maps into full flag manifolds, while the Gelfand-Zeitlin action on the whole gl(n,C) corresponds to a natural action on a space of rational maps into the manifold of half-full flags in C^{2n}.

Manifolds with an SU(2)-action on the tangent bundle

We study manifolds arising as spaces of sections of complex manifolds fibering over the projective line with normal bundle of each section isomorphic to several copies of O(k). Such manifolds provide a natural setting for certain integrable systems, "monopoles", which comprise the Bogomolny hierarchy and the self-dual hierarchy.

Complexification and hypercomplexification of manifolds with a linear connection

We give a simple interpretation of the adapted complex structure of Lempert-Szoke and Guillemin-Stenzel: it is given by a polar decomposition of the complexified manifold. We then give a twistorial construction of an SO(3)-invariant hypercomplex structure on a neighbourhood of $X$ in $TTX$, where $X$ is a real-analytic manifold equipped with a linear connection. We show that the Nahm equations arise naturally in this context: for a connection with zero curvature and arbitrary torsion, the real sections of the twistor space can be obtained by solving Nahm's equations in the Lie algebra of certain vector fields. Finally, we show that, if we start with a metric connection, then our construction yields an SO(3)-invariant hyperkähler metric.

Kaehler metrics on G^C

We study G-invariant Kaehler metrics on G^C from the Hamiltonian point of view. As an application we show that there exist (GxG)-invariant Ricci-flat Kaehler metrics on G^C for any compact semisimple Lie group G.

Nahm's equations, configuration spaces and flag manifolds

We give a positive answer to the Berry-Robbins problem for any compact Lie group G, i.e. we show the existence of a smooth W-equivariant map from the space of regular triples in a Cartan subalgebra to the flag manifold G/T. This map is constructed via solutions to Nahm's equations and it is compatible with the SO(3) action, where SO(3) acts on G/T via a regular homomorphism from SU(2) to G. We then generalize this picture to include an arbitrary homomorphism from SU(2) to G. This leads to an interesting geometrical picture which appears to be related to the Springer representation of the Weyl group and the work of Kazhdan and Lusztig on representations of Hecke algebras.

Twistor quotients of hyperkaehler manifolds

We generalize the hyperkaehler quotient construction to the situation where there is no group action preserving the hyperkaehler structure but for each complex structure there is an action of a complex group preserving the corresponding complex symplectic structure. Many (known and new) hyperkaehler manifolds arise as quotients in this setting. For example, all hyperkaehler structures on semisimple coadjoint orbits of a complex semisimple Lie group $G$ arise as such quotients of $T^*G$. The generalized Legendre transform construction of Lindstroem and Rocek is also explained in this framework.
