Particle Physics Outreach at Non-traditional Venues

Since 2016 the group known as `The Big Bang Collective' has brought High Energy Physics outreach to music and culture festivals across Europe, successfully engaging with and inspiring audiences who may never have sought this out themselves through activities in their `Physics Pavilions'. The US has a very long, glorious tradition of music festivals, and an incredible community of sci-comm engaged physicists, from students to senior staff. With the experience already gained in Europe, The Big Bang Collective believes the time is now ripe to bring their Physics Pavilions to US music festivals.

HEP Software Foundation Community White Paper Working Group - Training, Staffing and Careers

The rapid evolution of technology and the parallel increasing complexity of algorithmic analysis in HEP requires developers to acquire a much larger portfolio of programming skills. Young researchers graduating from universities worldwide currently do not receive adequate preparation in the very diverse fields of modern computing to respond to growing needs of the most advanced experimental challenges. There is a growing consensus in the HEP community on the need for training programmes to bring researchers up to date with new software technologies, in particular in the domains of concurrent programming and artificial intelligence. We review some of the initiatives under way for introducing new training programmes and highlight some of the issues that need to be taken into account for these to be successful.

Status Report of the DPHEP Collaboration: A Global Effort for Sustainable Data Preservation in High Energy Physics

Data from High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organizational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP and an extended blueprint paper was published in 2012. In July 2014 the DPHEP collaboration was formed as a result of the signature of the Collaboration Agreement by seven large funding agencies (others have since joined or are in the process of acquisition) and in June 2015 the first DPHEP Collaboration Workshop and Collaboration Board meeting took place. This status report of the DPHEP collaboration details the progress during the period from 2013 to 2015 inclusive.

DMP Planning for Big Science Projects

This report exists to provide high-level guidance for the strategic and engineering development of Data Management and Preservation plans for 'Big Science' data. Although the report's nominal audience is therefore rather narrow, we intend the document to be of use to other planners and data architects who wish to implement good practice in this area. For the purposes of this report, we presume that the reader is broadly persuaded (by external fiat if nothing else) of the need to preserve research data appropriately, and that they have both sophisticated technical support and the budget to support developments. The goal of the document is not to provide mechanically applicable recipes, but to allow the user to develop and lead a high-level plan which is appropriate to their organisation. Throughout, the report is informed where appropriate by the OAIS reference model.

Evaluation of the Beam Coupling Impedance of New Beam Screen Designs for the LHC Injection Kicker Magnets

During the 2011 run of the LHC there was a significant measured temperature increase in the LHC Injection Kicker Magnets (MKI) during operation with 50ns bunch spacing. This was due to increased beam-induced heating of the magnet due to beam impedance. Due to concerns about future heating with the increased total intensity to nominal and ultimate luminosities a review of the impedance reduction techniques within the magnet was required. A number of new beam screen designs are proposed and their impedance evaluated. Heating estimates are also given with a particular attention paid to future intensity upgrades to ultimate parameters.

Beam Coupling Impedance of the LHC TCTP Collimators

As part of an upgrade to the LHC collimation system, 8 TCTP and 1 TCSG collimators are proposed to replace existing collimators in the collimation system. In an effort to review all equipment placed in the accelerator complex for potential side effects due to collective effects and beam-equipment interactions, beam coupling impedance simulations are carried out in both the time-domain and frequency-domain of the full TCTP design. Particular attention is paid to trapped modes that may induce beam instabilities and beam-induced heating due to cavity modes of the device.

Status Report of the DPHEP Study Group: Towards a Global Effort for Sustainable Data Preservation in High Energy Physics

Data from high-energy physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organisational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP. This paper includes and extends the intermediate report. It provides an analysis of the research case for data preservation and a detailed description of the various projects at experiment, laboratory and international levels. In addition, the paper provides a concrete proposal for an international organisation in charge of the data management and policies in high-energy physics.

Simulations of Coaxial Wire Measurements of the Impedance of Asymmetric Structures

Coaxial wire measurements have provided a simple and effective way to measure the beam coupling impedance of accelerator structures for a number of years. It has been known how to measure the longitudinal and dipolar transverse impedance using one and two wires for some time. Recently the ability to measure the quadrupolar impedance of structures exhibiting top/bottom and left/right symmetry has been demonstrated. A method for measuring the beam coupling impedance of asymmetric structures using displaced single wires and two wire measurements is proposed. Simulations of the measurement system are presented with further work proposed.

Coaxial Wire Measurements of Ferrite Kicker Magnets

Fast kicker magnets are used to inject beam into and eject beam out of the CERN accelerator rings. These kickers are generally transmission line type magnets with a rectangular shaped aperture through which the beam passes. Unless special precautions are taken the impedance of the yoke can provoke significant beam induced heating, especially for high intensities. In addition the impedance may contribute to beam instabilities. The results of longitudinal and transverse impedance measurements, for various kicker magnets, are presented and compared with analytical calculations: in addition predictions from a numerical analysis are discussed.

Comparison of the current LHC Collimators and the SLAC Phase 2 Collimator Impedances

One of the key sources of transverse impedance in the LHC has been the secondary graphite collimators that sit close to the beam at all energies. This limits the stable bunch intensity due to transverse coupled-bunch instabilities and transverse mode coupling instability. To counteract this, new secondary collimators have been proposed for the phase II upgrade of the LHC collimation system. A number of designs based on different jaw materials and mechanical designs have been proposed. A comparison of the beam coupling impedance of these different designs derived from simulations are presented, with reference to the existing phase I secondary collimator design.

Exponential sums with coefficients 0 or 1 and concentrated L^{p} norms

Let f be a sum of exponentials of the form exp(2 pi i N x), where the N are distinct integers. We call f an idempotent trigonometric polynomial (because the convolution of f with itself is f) or, simply, an idempotent. We show that for every p > 1, and every set E of the torus T = R/Z with |E| > 0, there are idempotents concentrated on E in the Lp sense. More precisely, for each p > 1, there is an explicitly calculated constant Cp > 0 so that for each E with |E| > 0 and epsilon > 0 one can find an idempotent f such that the pth root of the ratio of the integral over E of the pth power of |f| to the integral over T of the pth power of |f| is greater than Cp - epsilon. This is in fact a lower bound result and, though not optimal, it is close to the best that our method gives. We also give both heuristic and computational evidence for the still open problem of whether the Lp concentration phenomenon fails to occur when p = 1.
