Numerical Resolution near t = 0 of Nonlinear Evolution Equations in the Presence of Corner Singularities in Space Dimension 1

The incompatibilities between the initial and boundary data will cause singularities at the time-space corners, which in turn adversely affect the accuracy of the numerical schemes used to compute the solutions. We study the corner singularity issue for nonlinear evolution equations in 1D, and propose two remedy procedures that effectively recover much of the accuracy of the numerical scheme in use. Applications of the remedy procedures to the 1D viscous Burgers equation, and to the 1D nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation are presented. The remedy procedures are applicable to other nonlinear diffusion equations as well.

Time-Dependent Attractor for the Oscillon Equation

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the nonautonomous evolution problem generated by the Klein-Gordon equation in an expanding background, in one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions, with a nonlinear potential of arbitrary polynomial growth. After constructing a suitable dynamical framework to deal with the explicit time dependence of the energy of the solution, we establish the existence of a regular, time-dependent global attractor. The sections of the attractor at given times have finite fractal dimension.

Statistical Estimates For Channel Flows Driven By A Pressure Gradient

We present rigorous estimates for some physical quantities related to turbulent and non-turbulent channel flows driven by a uniform pressure gradient. Such results are based on the concept of stationary statistical solution, which is related to the notion of ensemble average for flows in statistical equilibrium. We provide a lower bound estimate for the mean skin friction coefficient and improve on a previous upper bound estimate for the same quantity; both estimates in terms of the Reynolds number. We also present lower and upper bound estimates for the mean rate of energy dissipation, the mean longitudinal velocity (in the direction of the pressure gradient), and the mean kinetic energy. In particular, we obtain an upper bound related to the energy dissipation law, namely that the mean rate of energy dissipation is essentially bounded by a non-dimensional universal constant times the cube of the mean longitudinal velocity over a characteristic macro-scale length. Finally, we investigate the scale-by-scale energy injection due to the pressure gradient, proving an upper bound estimate for the decrease of this energy injection as the scale length decreases.

Inertial Forms of Navier-Stokes Equations on Sphere

The Navier--Stokes equations for incompressible flows past a two--dimensional sphere are considered in this article. The existence of an inertial form of the equations is established. Furthermore for the first time for fluid equations, we derive an upper bound on the dimension of the differential system (inertial manifold) which fully reproduces the infinite dimensional dynamics. This bound is expressed in terms of Grashof Numbers.
