The bidirectional ballot polytope

A bidirectional ballot sequence (BBS) is a finite binary sequence with the property that every prefix and suffix contains strictly more ones than zeros. BBS's were introduced by Zhao, and independently by Bosquet-M{é}lou and Ponty as $(1,1)$-culminating paths. Both sets of authors noted the difficulty in counting these objects, and to date research on bidirectional ballot sequences has been concerned with asymptotics. We introduce a continuous analogue of bidirectional ballot sequences which we call bidirectional gerrymanders, and show that the set of bidirectional gerrymanders form a convex polytope sitting inside the unit cube, which we refer to as the bidirectional ballot polytope. We prove that every $(2n-1)$-dimensional unit cube can be partitioned into $2n-1$ isometric copies of the $(2n-1)$-dimensional bidirectional ballot polytope. Furthermore, we show that the vertices of this polytope are all also vertices of the cube, and that the vertices are in bijection with BBS's. An immediate corollary is a geometric explanation of the result of Zhao and of Bosquet-M{é}lou and Ponty that the number of BBS's of length $n$ is $Θ(2^n/n)$.

Spectral distributions of periodic random matrix ensembles

Koloğlu, Kopp and Miller compute the limiting spectral distribution of a certain class of real random matrix ensembles, known as $k$-block circulant ensembles, and discover that it is exactly equal to the eigenvalue distribution of an $k \times k$ Gaussian unitary ensemble. We give a simpler proof that under very general conditions which subsume the cases studied by Koloğlu-Kopp-Miller, real-symmetric ensembles with periodic diagonals always have limiting spectral distribution equal to the eigenvalue distribution of a finite Hermitian ensemble with Gaussian entries which is a `complex version' of a $k \times k$ submatrix of the ensemble. We also prove an essentially algebraic relation between certain periodic finite Hermitian ensembles with Gaussian entries, and the previous result may be seen as an asymptotic version of this for real-symmetric ensembles. The proofs show that this general correspondence between periodic random matrix ensembles and finite complex Hermitian ensembles is elementary and combinatorial in nature.

On smoothing singularities of elliptic orbital integrals on GL(n) and Beyond Endoscopy

Recent work of Altuğ continues the preliminary analysis of Langlands' Beyond Endoscopy proposal for $GL(2)$ by removing the contribution of the trivial representation to the trace formula using a Poisson summation formula. We show that Altuğ's method of smoothing real elliptic orbital integrals by an approximate functional equation extends to $GL(n)$. We also discuss the case of an arbitrary reductive group, and remaining obstructions for applying Poisson summation.

Moonshine for All Finite Groups

In recent literature, moonshine has been explored for some groups beyond the Monster, for example the sporadic O'Nan and Thompson groups. This collection of examples may suggest that moonshine is a rare phenomenon, but a fundamental and largely unexplored question is how general the correspondence is between modular forms and finite groups. For every finite group $G$, we give constructions of infinitely many graded infinite-dimensional $\mathbb{C}[G]$-modules where the McKay-Thompson series for a conjugacy class $[g]$ is a weakly holomorphic modular function properly on $Γ_0(\text{ord}(g))$. As there are only finitely many normalized Hauptmoduln, groups whose McKay-Thompson series are normalized Hauptmoduln are rare, but not as rare as one might naively expect. We give bounds on the powers of primes dividing the order of groups which have normalized Hauptmoduln of level $\text{ord}(g)$ as the graded trace functions for any conjugacy class $[g]$, and completely classify the finite abelian groups with this property. In particular, these include $(\mathbb{Z} / 5 \mathbb{Z})^5$ and $(\mathbb{Z} / 7 \mathbb{Z})^4$, which are not subgroups of the Monster.

Random Matrix Ensembles with Split Limiting Behavior

We introduce a new family of $N\times N$ random real symmetric matrix ensembles, the $k$-checkerboard matrices, whose limiting spectral measure has two components which can be determined explicitly. All but $k$ eigenvalues are in the bulk, and their behavior, appropriately normalized, converges to the semi-circle as $N\to\infty$; the remaining $k$ are tightly constrained near $N/k$ and their distribution converges to the $k \times k$ hollow GOE ensemble (this is the density arising by modifying the GOE ensemble by forcing all entries on the main diagonal to be zero). Similar results hold for complex and quaternionic analogues. We isolate the two regimes by using matrix perturbation results and a nonstandard weight function for the eigenvalues, then derive their limiting distributions using a modification of the method of moments and analysis of the resulting combinatorics.

A Generalization of Tokuyama's Formula to the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials

A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.
