Non-Drude universal scaling laws for the optical response of local Fermi liquids

We investigate the frequency and temperature dependence of the low-energy electron dynamics in a Landau Fermi liquid with a local self-energy. We show that the frequency and temperature dependencies of the optical conductivity obey universal scaling forms, for which explicit analytical expressions are obtained. For the optical conductivity and the associated memory function, we obtain a number of surprising features that differ qualitatively from the Drude model and are universal characteristics of a Fermi liquid. Different physical regimes of scaling are identified, with marked non-Drude features in the regime where hbar omega ~ kB T. These analytical results for the optical conductivity are compared to numerical calculations for the doped Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory. For the "universal" low-energy electrodynamics, we obtain perfect agreement between numerical calculations and analytical scaling laws. Both results show that the optical conductivity displays a non-Drude "foot", which could be easily mistaken as a signature of breakdown of the Fermi liquid, while it actually is a striking signature of its applicability. The aforementioned scaling laws provide a quantitative tool for the experimental identification and analysis of the Fermi-liquid state using optical spectroscopy, and a powerful method for the identification of alternative states of matter, when applicable.

Padé approximants for improved finite-temperature spectral functions in the numerical renormalization group

We introduce an improved approach for obtaining smooth finite-temperature spectral functions of quantum impurity models using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) technique. It is based on calculating first the Green's function on the imaginary-frequency axis, followed by an analytic continuation to the real-frequency axis using Padé approximants. The arbitrariness in choosing a suitable kernel in the conventional broadening approach is thereby removed and, furthermore, we find that the Padé method is able to resolve fine details in spectral functions with less artifacts on the scale of omega ~ T. We discuss the convergence properties with respect to the NRG calculation parameters (discretization, truncation cutoff) and the number of Matsubara points taken into account in the analytic continuation. We test the technique on the the single-impurity Anderson model and the Hubbard model (within the dynamical mean-field theory). For the Anderson impurity model, we discuss the shape of the Kondo resonance and its temperature dependence. For the Hubbard model, we discuss the inner structure of the Hubbard bands in metallic and insulating solutions at half-filling, as well as in the doped Mott insulator. Based on these test cases we conclude that the Padé approximant approach provides more reliable results for spectral functions at low-frequency scales of omega < T and that it is capable of resolving sharp spectral features also at high frequencies. It outperforms broadening in most respects.

Tunable Kondo effect in double quantum dots coupled to ferromagnetic contacts

We investigate the effects induced by spin polarization in the contacts attached to a serial double quantum dot. The polarization generates effective magnetic fields and suppresses the Kondo effect in each dot. The super-exchange interaction ($J_{\mathrm{AFM}}$), tuned by the inter-dot tunnelling rate $t$, can be used to compensate the effective fields and restore the Kondo resonance when the contact polarizations are aligned. As a consequence, the direction of the spin conductance can be controlled and even reversed using electrostatic gates alone. Furthermore, we study the associated two-impurity Kondo model and show that a ferromagnetic exchange coupling ($J_{\mathrm{FM}}$) leads to an effective spin-1 exchange-anisotropic Kondo model which exhibits a quantum phase transition in the presence of partially polarized contacts.
