Future stability of large-data wave maps in energy-supercritical dimensions

We consider energy-supercritical co-rotational wave maps from Minkowski spacetime to the sphere in odd spatial dimensions. The equation admits an explicit co-rotational self-similar blowup solution, which also induces solutions that blow up in the past. In the region after the blowup the solution treated in this paper is remarkable, as it is smooth forward in time and exhibits less than dispersive decay. We prove nonlinear asymptotic stability of this large-data self-similar solution inside forward light cones. In particular, we identify an open set of initial data close to the explicit solution that give rise to forward-in-time wave maps whose decay is slower than that of generic free waves.

Mode stability of self-similar wave maps without symmetry in higher dimensions

We consider wave maps from $(1+d)$-dimensional Minkowski space into the $d$-sphere. For every $d \geq 3$, there exists an explicit self-similar solution that exhibits finite time blowup. This solution is corotational and its mode stability in the class of corotational functions is known. Recently, Weissenbacher, Koch, and the first author proved mode stability without symmetry assumptions in $d =3$. In this paper we extend this result to all $d \geq 4$. On a technical level, this is the first successful implementation of the quasi-solution method where two additional parameters are present.

Blowup stability of wave maps without symmetry

We study wave maps from $(1+d)$-dimensional Minkowski space into the $d$-sphere without any symmetry assumptions. There exists an explicit self-similar blowup solution and we prove that this solution is asymptotically stable under small perturbations of the initial data. The proof is fully rigorous and requires no numerical input whatsoever.

Self-similar blowup for mass supercritical Schr\"odinger equations

We consider the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in three spatial dimensions with powers close to three and prove the existence of a self-similar solution. This generalizes a previous result on the cubic case and shows that self-similar blowup is stable under perturbations of the equation.

Stable blowup for supercritical wave maps into perturbed spheres

We consider wave maps from $(1+d)$-dimensional Minkowski space, $d\geq3$, into rotationally symmetric manifolds which arise from small perturbations of the sphere $\mathbb S^d$. We prove the existence of co-rotational self-similar finite time blowup solutions with smooth blowup profiles. Furthermore, we show the nonlinear asymptotic stability of these solutions under suitably small co-rotational perturbations on the full space.

Mode stability of blow-up for wave maps in the absence of symmetry

The wave maps equation in three spatial dimensions with a spherical target admits an explicit blow-up solution. Numerical studies suggest this solution captures the generic blow-up behaviour in the backward light cone of the singularity. In this work, we establish the mode stability of this blow-up solution in the backward light cone of the blow-up point without any assumptions on the symmetries of the perturbation. We classify all smooth mode solutions for growth rates $\lambda$ with $\mathrm{Re} \, \lambda \geq 0$ and demonstrate that the blow-up solution is stable up to the mode solutions arising from the symmetry group of the wave maps equation. Our proof relies on a decomposition of the linearised wave maps equation into a tractable system of symmetry-equivariant ordinary differential equations (ODEs), utilising the representation theory of the stabiliser of the blow-up solution. We then use the quasi-solution method of Costin-Donninger-Glogi\'{c} to show the absence of non-zero smooth solutions for the resulting system of ODEs.

On stable self-similar blowup for corotational wave maps and equivariant Yang-Mills connections

We consider corotational wave maps from Minkowski spacetime into the sphere and the equivariant Yang-Mills equation for all energy-supercritical dimensions. Both models have explicit self-similar finite time blowup solutions, which continue to exist even past the singularity. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of these solutions in spacetime regions that approach the future light cone of the singularity. For this, we develop a general functional analytic framework in adapted similarity coordinates that allows to evolve the stable wave flow near a self-similar blowup solution in such spacetime regions.

Self-similar blowup for the cubic Schr\"odinger equation

We give a rigorous proof for the existence of a finite-energy, self-similar solution to the focusing cubic Schr\"odinger equation in three spatial dimensions. The proof is computer-assisted and relies on a fixed point argument that shows the existence of a solution in the vicinity of a numerically constructed approximation. The latter is obtained by a standard pseudo-spectral method. The computer-assisted part of the rigorous proof uses nothing but fraction arithmetic in order to obtain quantitative bounds for the fixed point argument.

A globally stable self-similar blowup profile in energy supercritical Yang-Mills theory

This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for an energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation in odd space dimensions that arises in equivariant Yang-Mills theory. In each dimension, there is a self-similar finite-time blowup solution to this equation known in closed form. It will be proved that this profile is stable in the whole space under small perturbations of the initial data. The blowup analysis is based on a recently developed coordinate system called hyperboloidal similarity coordinates and depends crucially on growth estimates for the free wave evolution, which will be constructed systematically for odd space dimensions in the first part of this paper. This allows to develop a nonlinear stability theory beyond the singularity.

Spectral theory and self-similar blowup in wave equations

This is an expository article that describes the spectral-theoretic aspects in the study of the stability of self-similar blowup for nonlinear wave equations. The linearization near a self-similar solution leads to a genuinely nonself-adjoint operator which is difficult to analyze. The main goal of this article is to provide an accessible account to the only known method that is capable of providing sufficient spectral information to complete the stability analysis. The exposition is based on a mini course given at the Summer School on Geometric Dispersive PDEs in Obergurgl, Austria, in September 2022.

Optimal blowup stability for three-dimensional wave maps

We study corotational wave maps from $(1+3)$-dimensional Minkowski space into the three-sphere. We establish the asymptotic stability of an explicitly known self-similar wave map under perturbations that are small in the critical Sobolev space. This is accomplished by proving Strichartz estimates for a radial wave equation with a potential in similarity coordinates. Compared to earlier work, the main novelty lies with the fact that the critical Sobolev space is of fractional order.

Co-dimension one stable blowup for the quadratic wave equation beyond the light cone

We study the stability of an explicitly known, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution of the quadratic wave equation in the lowest energy supercritical dimension $d = 7$. This solution blows up at a single point and extends naturally away from the singularity. By using hyperboloidal similarity coordinates, we prove the conditional nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small, compactly supported radial perturbations in a region of spacetime which can be made arbitrarily close to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. To achieve this, we rigorously solve the underlying spectral problem and show that the solution has exactly one genuine instability. The unstable nature of the solution requires a careful construction of suitably adjusted initial data at $t = 0$, which, when propagated to a family of spacelike hypersurfaces of constant hyperboloidal time, takes the required form to guarantee convergence. By this, we introduce a new canonical method to investigate unstable self-similar solutions for nonlinear wave equations within the framework of hyperboloidal similarity coordinates.

Optimal blowup stability for supercritical wave maps

We study corotational wave maps from $(1+4)$-dimensional Minkowski space into the $4$-sphere. We prove the stability of an explicitly known self-similar wave map under perturbations that are small in the critical Sobolev space.

Blowup behavior of strongly perturbed wave equations

We study the blowup behavior of a class of strongly perturbed wave equations with a focusing supercritical power nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions. We show that the ODE blowup profile of the unperturbed equation still describes the asymptotics of stable blowup. As a consequence, stable ODE-type blowup is seen to be a universal phenomenon that exists in a large class of semilinear wave equations.

Strichartz estimates for the one-dimensional wave equation

We study the hyperboloidal initial value problem for the one-dimensional wave equation perturbed by a smooth potential. We show that the evolution decomposes into a finite-dimensional spectral part and an infinite-dimensional radiation part. For the radiation part we prove a set of Strichartz estimates. As an application we study the long-time asymptotics of Yang-Mills fields on a wormhole spacetime.

Hyperboloidal similarity coordinates and a globally stable blowup profile for supercritical wave maps

We consider co-rotational wave maps from (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space into the three-sphere. This model exhibits an explicit blowup solution and we prove the asymptotic nonlinear stability of this solution in the whole space under small perturbations of the initial data. The key ingredient is the introduction of a novel coordinate system that allows one to track the evolution past the blowup time and almost up to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. As a consequence, we also obtain a result on continuation beyond blowup.

Existence and stability of Schrödinger solitons on noncompact manifolds

We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a large class of rotationally symmetric, noncompact manifolds. We prove the existence of a solitary wave by perturbing off the flat Euclidean case. Furthermore, we study the stability of the solitary wave under radial perturbations by analyzing spectral properties of the associated linearized operator. Finally, in the L2-critical case, by considering the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion (see also results of Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss), we provide numerical evidence showing that the introduction of a nontrivial geometry destabilizes the solitary wave in a wide variety of cases, regardless of the curvature of the manifold. In particular, the parameters of the metric corresponding to standard hyperbolic space will lead to instability consistent with the blow-up results of Banica-Duyckaerts (2015). We also provide numerical evidence for geometries under which it would be possible for the Vakhitov-Kolokolov condition to suggest stability, provided certain spectral properties hold in these spaces
