Exponential decay of the linear Maxwell system due to conductivity near the boundary

We study the anisotropic linear Maxwell system on a bounded domain $Ω$ with perfectly conducting boundary conditions. It is damped via a conductivity $σ$ which is strictly positive on a collar at the boundary. We prove that solutions decay exponentially to 0, if the fields have no magnetic charges on $Ω$ and no electric charges off the support of $σ$. Our approach relies on a splitting of the solution via a Helmholtz decomposition and an observability-type estimate for a related second-order system without charges, shown using Morawetz multipliers. Corresponding exact observability and controllability results are also established.

Normal trace inequalities and decay of solutions to the nonlinear Maxwell system with absorbing boundary

We study the quasilinear Maxwell system with a strictly positive, state dependent boundary conductivity. For small data we show that the solution exists for all times and decays exponentially to $0$. As in related literature we assume a nontrapping condition. Our approach relies on a new trace estimate for the corresponding non-autonomous linear problem, an observability-type estimate, and a detailed regularity analysis. The results are improved in the linear autonomous case, using properties of the Helmholtz decomposition in Sobolev spaces of (small) negative order.

Error analysis of the Lie splitting for semilinear wave equations with finite-energy solutions

We study time integration schemes for $\dot H^1$-solutions to the energy-(sub)critical semilinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$. We show first-order convergence in $L^2$ for the Lie splitting and convergence order $3/2$ for a corrected Lie splitting. To our knowledge this includes the first error analysis performed for scaling-critical dispersive problems. Our approach is based on discrete-time Strichartz estimates, including one (with a logarithmic correction) for the case of the forbidden endpoint. Our schemes and the Strichartz estimates contain frequency cut-offs.

On growth and instability for semilinear evolution equations: an abstract approach

We propose a new approach to the study of (nonlinear) growth and instability for semilinear evolution equations with compact nonlinearities. We show, in particular, that compact nonlinear perturbations of a linear evolution equation can be treated as linear ones as far as the growth of their solutions is concerned. We obtain exponential lower bounds of solutions for initial values from a dense set if, e.g., the resolvent of the generator is unbounded on a vertical line in the right halfplane.

Rigorous Envelope Approximation for Interface Wave-Packets in Maxwell's Equations with 2D Localization

We study transverse magnetic (vector valued) wave-packets in the time dependent Kerr nonlinear Maxwell's equations at the interface of two inhomogeneous dielectrics with an instantaneous material response. The resulting model is quasilinear. The problem is solved on each side of the interface and the fields are coupled via natural interface conditions. The wave-packet is localized at the interface and propagates in the tangential direction. For a slowly modulated envelope approximation the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is formally derived as an amplitude equation for the envelope. We rigorously justify the approximation in a Sobolev space norm on the corresponding asymptotically large time intervals. The well-posedness result for the quasilinear Maxwell problem builds on the local theory of [R. Schnaubelt und M. Spitz, Local wellposedness of quasilinear Maxwell equations with conservative interface conditions, \textit{Commun. Math. Sci.}, accepted, 2022] and extends this to asymptotically large time intervals for small data using an involved bootstrapping argument.

Strichartz estimates for Maxwell equations in media: The fully anisotropic case

We prove Strichartz estimates for Maxwell equations in media in the fully anisotropic case with Hölder-continuous coefficients. To this end, we use the FBI transform to conjugate the problem to phase space. After reducing to a scalar estimate by means of a matrix symmetrizer, we show oscillatory integral estimates for a variable-coefficient Fourier extension operator. The characteristic surface has conical singularities for any non-vanishing time frequency. Combined with energy estimates, we improve the local well-posedness for certain fully anisotropic quasilinear Maxwell equations.

Wellposedness for a (1+1)-dimensional wave equation with quasilinear boundary condition

We consider the linear wave equation $V(x) u_{tt}(x, t) - u_{xx}(x, t) = 0$ on $[0, \infty)\times[0, \infty)$ with initial conditions and a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition $u_x(0, t) = (f(u_t(0,t)))_t$ at $x=0$. This problem is an exact reduction of a nonlinear Maxwell problem in electrodynamics. In the case where $f\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is an increasing homeomorphism we study global existence, uniqueness and wellposedness of the initial value problem by the method of characteristics and fixed point methods. We also prove conservation of energy and momentum and discuss why there is no wellposedness in the case where $f$ is a decreasing homeomorphism. Finally we show that previously known time-periodic, spatially localized solutions (breathers) of the wave equation with the nonlinear Neumann boundary condition at $x=0$ have enough regularity to solve the initial value problem with their own initial data.

On quasilinear Maxwell equations in two dimensions

New sharp Strichartz estimates for the Maxwell system in two dimensions with rough permittivity and non-trivial charges are proved. We use the FBI transform to carry out the analysis in phase space. For this purpose, the Maxwell equations are conjugated to a system of half-wave equations with rough coefficients. For this system, Strichartz estimates are similarly derived as in previous work by Tataru on scalar wave equations with rough coefficients. We use the estimates to improve the local well-posedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations in two dimensions.

Global Strichartz estimates for an inhomogeneous Maxwell system

We show global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the isotropic Maxwell system with divergence free data. On the scalar permittivity and permeability we impose decay assumptions as $|x|\to\infty$ and a non-trapping condition. The proof is based on smoothing estimates in weighted $L^2$ spaces which follow from corresponding resolvent estimates for the underlying Helmholtz problem.

Biharmonic wave maps: Local wellposedness in high regularity

We show the local wellposedness of biharmonic wave maps with initial data of sufficiently high Sobolev regularity and a blow-up criterion in the sup-norm of the gradient of the solutions. In contrast to the wave maps equation we use a vanishing viscosity argument and an appropriate parabolic regularization in order to obtain the existence result. The geometric nature of the equation is exploited to prove convergence of approximate solutions, uniqueness of the limit, and continuous dependence on initial data.

Biharmonic wave maps into spheres

A global weak solution of the biharmonic wave map equation in the energy space for spherical targets is constructed. The equation is reformulated as a conservation law and solved by a suitable Ginzburg-Landau type approximation.

Boundary Stabilization of Quasilinear Maxwell Equations

We investigate an initial-boundary value problem for a quasilinear nonhomogeneous, anisotropic Maxwell system subject to an absorbing boundary condition of Silver & Müller type in a smooth, bounded, strictly star-shaped domain of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Imposing usual smallness assumptions in addition to standard regularity and compatibility conditions, a nonlinear stabilizability inequality is obtained by showing nonlinear dissipativity and observability-like estimates enhanced by an intricate regularity analysis. With the stabilizability inequality at hand, the classic nonlinear barrier method is employed to prove that small initial data admit unique classical solutions that exist globally and decay to zero at an exponential rate. Our approach is based on a recently established local well-posedness theory in a class of $\mathcal{H}^{3}$-valued functions.

Local wellposedness of quasilinear Maxwell equations with absorbing boundary conditions

In this article we provide a local wellposedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations with absorbing boundary conditions in $\mathcal{H}^m$ for $m \geq 3$. The Maxwell equations are equipped with instantaneous nonlinear material laws leading to a quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic first order system. We consider both linear and nonlinear absorbing boundary conditions. We show existence and uniqueness of a local solution, provide a blow-up criterion in the Lipschitz norm, and prove the continuous dependence on the data. In the case of nonlinear boundary conditions we need a smallness assumption on the tangential trace of the solution. The proof is based on detailed apriori estimates and the regularity theory for the corresponding linear problem which we also develop here.

Local wellposedness of quasilinear Maxwell equations with conservative interface conditions

We establish a comprehensive local wellposedness theory for the quasilinear Maxwell system with interfaces in the space of piecewise $H^m$-functions for $m \geq 3$. The system is equipped with instantaneous and piecewise regular material laws and perfectly conducting interfaces and boundaries. We also provide a blow-up criterion in the Lipschitz norm and prove the continuous dependence on the data. The proof relies on precise a priori estimates and the regularity theory for the corresponding linear problem also shown here.

Exponential Decay of Quasilinear Maxwell Equations with Interior Conductivity

We consider a quasilinear nonhomogeneous, anisotropic Maxwell system in a bounded smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a strictly positive conductivity subject to the boundary conditions of a perfect conductor. Under appropriate regularity conditions, adopting a classical $L^{2}$-Sobolev solution framework, a nonlinear energy barrier estimate is established for local-in-time $H^{3}$-solutions to the Maxwell system by a proper combination of higher-order energy and observability-type estimates under a smallness assumption on the initial data. Technical complications due to quasilinearity, anisotropy and the lack of solenoidality, etc., are addressed. Finally, provided the initial data are small, the barrier method is applied to prove that local solutions exist globally and exhibit an exponential decay rate.

Regularity of stochastic Volterra equations by functional calculus methods

We establish pathwise continuity properties of solutions to a stochastic Volterra equation with an additive noise term given by a local martingale. The deterministic part is governed by an operator with an $H^\infty$-calculus and a scalar kernel. The proof relies on the dilation theorem for positive definite operator families on a Hilbert space.

Stable foliations near a traveling front for reaction diffusion systems

We establish the existence of a stable foliation in the vicinity of a traveling front solution for systems of reaction diffusion equations in one space dimension that arise in the study of chemical reactions models and solid fuel combustion. In this way we complement the orbital stability results from earlier papers by A. Ghazaryan, S. Schecter and Y. Latushkin. The essential spectrum of the differential operator obtained by linearization at the front touches the imaginary axis. In spaces with exponential weights, one can shift the spectrum to the left. We study the nonlinear equation on the intersection of the unweighted and weighted spaces. Small translations of the front form a center unstable manifold. For each small translation we prove the existence of a stable manifold containing the translated front and show that the stable manifolds foliate a small ball centered at the front.

Strong convergence of solutions to nonautonomous Kolmogorov equations

We study a class of nonautonomous, linear, parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients on $\mathbb R^{d}$ which admit an evolution system of measures. It is shown that the solutions of these equations converge to constant functions as $t\to+\infty$. We further establish the uniqueness of the tight evolution system of measures and treat the case of converging coefficients.
