Squared eigenvalue condition numbers and eigenvector correlations from the single ring theorem

We extend the so-called "single ring theorem"[1], also known as the Haagerup-Larsen theorem[2], by showing that in the limit when the size of the matrix goes to infinity a particular correlator between left and right eigenvectors of the relevant non-hermitian matrix $X$, being the spectral density weighted by the squared eigenvalue condition number, is given by a simple formula involving only the radial spectral cumulative distribution function of $X$. We show that this object allows to calculate the conditional expectation of the squared eigenvalue condition number. We give examples and we provide cross-check of the analytic prediction by the large scale numerics.

Epsilon-noncrossing partitions and cumulants in free probability

Motivated by recent work on mixtures of classical and free probabilities, we introduce and study the notion of $ε$-noncrossing partitions. It is shown that the set of such partitions forms a lattice, which interpolates as a poset between the poset of partitions and the one of noncrossing partitions. Moreover, $ε$-cumulants are introduced and shown to characterize the notion of $ε$-independence.

Mixtures of classical and free independence

We revive the concept of Lambda-freeness of Mlotkowski, which describes a mixture of classical and free independence between algebras of random variables. In particular, we give a description of this in terms of cumulants; this will be instrumental in the subsequent paper [SW] where the quantum symmetries underlying these mixtures of classical and free independences will be considered.

Quantum groups with partial commutation relations

We define new noncommutative spheres with partial commutation relations for the coordinates. We investigate the quantum groups acting maximally on them, which yields new quantum versions of the orthogonal group: They are partially commutative in a way such that they do not interpolate between the classical and the free quantum versions of the orthogonal group. Likewise we define non-interpolating, partially commutative quantum versions of the symmetric group recovering Bichon's quantum automorphism groups of graphs. They fit with the mixture of classical and free independence as recently defined by Speicher and Wysoczanski (rediscovering $Λ$-freeness of Mlotkowski), due to some weakened version of a de Finetti theorem.

Absence of algebraic relations and of zero divisors under the assumption of full non-microstates free entropy dimension

We show that in a tracial and finitely generated $W^\ast$-probability space existence of conjugate variables excludes algebraic relations for the generators. Moreover, under the assumption of maximal non-microstates free entropy dimension, we prove that there are no zero divisors in the sense that the product of any non-commutative polynomial in the generators with any element from the von Neumann algebra is zero if and only if at least one of those factors is zero. In particular, this shows that in this case the distribution of any non-constant self-adjoint non-commutative polynomial in the generators does not have atoms. Questions on the absence of atoms for polynomials in non-commuting random variables (or for polynomials in random matrices) have been an open problem for quite a while. We solve this general problem by showing that maximality of free entropy dimension excludes atoms.

Polynomials in Asymptotically Free Random Matrices

Recent work of Belinschi, Mai and Speicher resulted in a general algorithm to calculate the distribution of any selfadjoint polynomial in free variables. Since many classes of independent random matrices become asymptotically free if the size of the matrices goes to infinity, this algorithm allows then also the calculation of the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of polynomials in such independent random matrices. We will recall the main ideas of this approach and then also present its extension to the case of the Brown measure of non-selfadjoint polynomials.

Absence of algebraic relations and of zero divisors under the assumption of finite non-microstates free Fisher information

We show that in a tracial and finitely generated $W^\ast$-probability space existence of conjugate variables in an appropriate sense exclude algebraic relations for the generators. Moreover, under the assumption of finite non-microstates free Fisher information, we prove that there are no zero divisors in the sense that the product of any non-commutative polynomial in the generators with any element from the von Neumann algebra is zero if and only if at least one of those factors is zero.

Outage Capacity of Rayleigh Product Channels: a Free Probability Approach

The Rayleigh product channel model is useful in capturing the performance degradation due to rank deficiency of MIMO channels. In this paper, such a performance degradation is investigated via the channel outage probability assuming slowly varying channel with delay-constrained decoding. Using techniques of free probability theory, the asymptotic variance of channel capacity is derived when the dimensions of the channel matrices approach infinity. In this asymptotic regime, the channel capacity is rigorously proven to be Gaussian distributed. Using the obtained results, a fundamental tradeoff between multiplexing gain and diversity gain of Rayleigh product channels can be characterized by closed-form expression at any finite signal-to-noise ratio. Numerical results are provided to compare the relative outage performance between Rayleigh product channels and conventional Rayleigh MIMO channels.

Free probability and random matrices

The concept of freeness was introduced by Voiculescu in the context of operator algebras. Later it was observed that it is also relevant for large random matrices. We will show how the combination of various free probability results with a linearization trick allows to address successfully the problem of determining the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of general selfadjoint polynomials in independent random matrices.

Analytic subordination theory of operator-valued free additive convolution and the solution of a general random matrix problem

We develop an analytic theory of operator-valued additive free convolution in terms of subordination functions. In contrast to earlier investigations our functions are not just given by power series expansions, but are defined as Frechet analytic functions in all of the operator upper half plane. Furthermore, we do not have to assume that our state is tracial. Combining this new analytic theory of operator-valued free convolution with Anderson's selfadjoint version of the linearization trick we are able to provide a solution to the following general random matrix problem: How can we calculate the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of a polynomial evaluated in independent random matrices with known asymptotic eigenvalue distributions?

Schwinger-Dyson equations: classical and quantum

In this note we want to have another look on Schwinger-Dyson equations for the eigenvalue distributions and the fluctuations of classical unitarily invariant random matrix models. We are exclusively dealing with one-matrix models, for which the situation is quite well understood. Our point is not to add any new results to this, but to have a more algebraic point of view on these results and to understand from this perspective the universality results for fluctuations of these random matrices. We will also consider corresponding non-commutative or "quantum" random matrix models and contrast the results for fluctuations and Schwinger-Dyson equations in the quantum case with the findings from the classical case.

De Finetti theorems for easy quantum groups

We study sequences of noncommutative random variables which are invariant under "quantum transformations" coming from an orthogonal quantum group satisfying the "easiness" condition axiomatized in our previous paper. For 10 easy quantum groups, we obtain de Finetti type theorems characterizing the joint distribution of any infinite quantum invariant sequence. In particular, we give a new and unified proof of the classical results of de Finetti and Freedman for the easy groups S_n, O_n, which is based on the combinatorial theory of cumulants. We also recover the free de Finetti theorem of Köstler and Speicher, and the characterization of operator-valued free semicircular families due to Curran. We consider also finite sequences, and prove an approximation result in the spirit of Diaconis and Freedman.

Operator-valued free multiplicative convolution: analytic subordination theory and applications to random matrix theory

We give an explicit description, via analytic subordination, of free multiplicative convolution of operator-valued distributions. In particular, the subordination function is obtained from an iteration process. This algorithm is easily numerically implementable. We present two concrete applications of our method: the product of two free operator-valued semicircular elements and the calculation of the distribution of $dcd+d^2cd^2$ for scalar-valued $c$ and $d$, which are free. Comparision between the solution obtained by our methods and simulations of random matrices shows excellent agreement.

Wigner chaos and the fourth moment

We prove that a normalized sequence of multiple Wigner integrals (in a fixed order of free Wigner chaos) converges in law to the standard semicircular distribution if and only if the corresponding sequence of fourth moments converges to 2, the fourth moment of the semicircular law. This extends to the free probabilistic, setting some recent results by Nualart and Peccati on characterizations of central limit theorems in a fixed order of Gaussian Wiener chaos. Our proof is combinatorial, analyzing the relevant noncrossing partitions that control the moments of the integrals. We can also use these techniques to distinguish the first order of chaos from all others in terms of distributions; we then use tools from the free Malliavin calculus to give quantitative bounds on a distance between different orders of chaos. When applied to highly symmetric kernels, our results yield a new transfer principle, connecting central limit theorems in free Wigner chaos to those in Gaussian Wiener chaos. We use this to prove a new free version of an important classical theorem, the Breuer-Major theorem.

Operator-valued and multivariate free Berry-Esseen theorems

We address the question of a Berry-Esseen type theorem for the speed of convergence in a multivariate free central limit theorem. For this, we estimate the difference between the operator-valued Cauchy transforms of the normalized partial sums in an operator-valued free central limit theorem and the Cauchy transform of the limiting operator-valued semicircular element. Since we have to deal with in general non-self-adjoint operators, we introduce the notion of matrix-valued resolvent sets and study the behavior of Cauchy transforms on them.

Free Deterministic Equivalents, Rectangular Random Matrix Models, and Operator-Valued Free Probability Theory

Motivated by the asymptotic collective behavior of random and deterministic matrices, we propose an approximation (called "free deterministic equivalent") to quite general random matrix models, by replacing the matrices with operators satisfying certain freeness relations. We comment on the relation between our free deterministic equivalent and deterministic equivalents considered in the engineering literature. We do not only consider the case of square matrices, but also show how rectangular matrices can be treated. Furthermore, we emphasize how operator-valued free probability techniques can be used to solve our free deterministic equivalents. As an illustration of our methods we consider a random matrix model studied first by R. Couillet, J. Hoydis, and M. Debbah. We show how its free deterministic equivalent can be treated and we thus recover in a conceptual way their result. On a technical level, we generalize a result from scalar valued free probability, by showing that randomly rotated deterministic matrices of different sizes are asymptotically free from deterministic rectangular matrices, with amalgamation over a certain algebra of projections. In the Appendix, we show how estimates for differences between Cauchy transforms can be extended from a neighborhood of infinity to a region close to the real axis. This is of some relevance if one wants to compare the original random matrix problem with its free deterministic equivalent.

Multidimensional semicircular limits on the free Wigner chaos

We show that, for sequences of vectors of multiple Wigner integrals with respect to a free Brownian motion, componentwise convergence to semicircular is equivalent to joint convergence. This result extends to the free probability setting some findings by Peccati and Tudor (2005), and represents a multidimensional counterpart of a limit theorem inside the free Wigner chaos established by Kemp, Nourdin, Peccati and Speicher (2011).

Quantum invariant families of matrices in free probability

We consider (self-adjoint) families of infinite matrices of noncommutative random variables such that the joint distribution of their entries is invariant under conjugation by a free quantum group. For the free orthogonal and hyperoctahedral groups, we obtain complete characterizations of the invariant families in terms of an operator-valued $R$-cyclicity condition. This is a surprising contrast with the Aldous-Hoover characterization of jointly exchangeable arrays.
