On-sky Fibre-Target-Alignment of the 4MOST instrument: calibration and performance

The 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST) is a new wide-field, fibre-fed spectroscopic survey facility for the VISTA telescope at ESOs Paranal Observatory. The instrument enables the simultaneous acquisition of 2436 spectra across a 4.2 square deg field of view, using a tilting spine fibre positioner feeding three dedicated spectrographs. In this paper, we describe the calibration process, and performance verification of the Fibre-Target-Alignment (FTA) process for 4MOST. We show the complete FTA process, including calibration of the individual hardware- and software components. Namely the Metrology camera system, the Fibre Positioner AESOP, a spine based Secondary Guiding System, the sky to focal surface projection software, and residual minimization via raster scans. In total, the FTA system required one special tool, a large calibration target for the focal surface, and approximately 1 month of accumulated calibration work on the telescope. The FTA process reached approx. 24 um (0.4 arc sec) RMS distance between fibres and targets on sky about 3 weeks after installation of the final hardware components of 4MOST, which is when 4MOST had its first light event. By the time of writing this paper, i.e. 6 months later, we reach approx. 16 um (0.27 arc sec) RMS. Currently, we far exceed our requirements in terms of accuracy, and are doing trade-off studies to maximize scientific returns.

Micromagnetic simulations for magnetic multipoles

Cluster magnetic multipoles are order parameters that characterize the symmetry of spin arrangements in magnetic materials. In particular, high-order multipoles play a pivotal role in altermagnets and non-collinear antiferromagnets where they govern electrical and optical phenomena. While spatially non-uniform multipole textures have been observed on the micrometer scale, their behavior at mesoscopic lengths remains largely unexplored. Here, we introduce a comprehensive micromagnetic framework for vector-like cluster magnetic multipoles, enabling quantitative, spatially resolved analysis of non-uniform multipole systems. As a demonstration, we apply the framework to magnetic-octupole domain-wall motion in the non-collinear antiferromagnet $\text{Mn}_3\text{Sn}$. Our simulations capture key features of domain-wall dynamics, including profile deformation and the emergence of an effective inertial mass. This work provides a unified approach for investigating the mesoscopic dynamics of high-order cluster multipoles, and opens new avenues for understanding and engineering the physical properties of functional magnetic materials, such as altermagnets and non-collinear antiferromagnets, for advanced spintronic technologies.

Fermi level tuning and band alignment in Mn doped InAs/GaSb

InAs/GaSb hosts a broken gap band alignment that has been shown to generate helical topological edge states. Upon the introduction of Mn into the structure, it has been predicted to host a quantized anomalous Hall effect. Here, we show that dilute Mn doping on InAs in InAs/GaSb, allows a tuning of the Fermi level, the introduction of paramagnetism, but also has a non-trivial impact on the band alignment of the system. The measurement of Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations, cyclotron resonance, and a non-linear Hall effect in Mn-doped samples indicate the coexistence of a high mobility two-dimensional electron gas and a hole gas. Conversely, in undoped InAs/GaSb, pure-n-type transport is observed. We hypothesize that Mn acceptor levels can pin the Fermi energy near the valence band edge of InAs, far from the interface, which introduces a strong band bending to preserve the band offset at the InAs/GaSb interface. The realization of the QAHE in this structure will thus require a careful control of the band alignment to preserve topological insulating character.

Spin-orbit splitting and effective masses in p-type GaAs two-dimensional hole gases

We present magnetotransport measurements performed on two-dimensional hole gases embedded in carbon doped p-type GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures grown on [001] oriented substrates. A pronounced beating pattern in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations proves the presence of strong spin-orbit interaction in the device under study. We estimate the effective masses of spin-orbit split subbands by measuring the temperature dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations at different hole densities. While the lighter heavy-hole effective mass is not energy dependent, the heavier heavy-hole effective mass has a prominent energy dependence, indicating a strong spin-orbit induced non parabolicity of the valence band. The measured effective masses show qualitative agreement with self-consistent numerical calculations.

4MOST - 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope

The 4MOST consortium is currently halfway through a Conceptual Design study for ESO with the aim to develop a wide-field (>3 square degree, goal >5 square degree), high-multiplex (>1500 fibres, goal 3000 fibres) spectroscopic survey facility for an ESO 4m-class telescope (VISTA). 4MOST will run permanently on the telescope to perform a 5 year public survey yielding more than 20 million spectra at resolution R~5000 (λ=390-1000 nm) and more than 2 million spectra at R~20,000 (395-456.5 nm & 587-673 nm). The 4MOST design is especially intended to complement three key all-sky, space-based observatories of prime European interest: Gaia, eROSITA and Euclid. Initial design and performance estimates for the wide-field corrector concepts are presented. We consider two fibre positioner concepts, a well-known Phi-Theta system and a new R-Theta concept with a large patrol area. The spectrographs are fixed configuration two-arm spectrographs, with dedicated spectrographs for the high- and low-resolution. A full facility simulator is being developed to guide trade-off decisions regarding the optimal field-of-view, number of fibres needed, and the relative fraction of high-to-low resolution fibres. Mock catalogues with template spectra from seven Design Reference Surveys are simulated to verify the science requirements of 4MOST. The 4MOST consortium aims to deliver the full 4MOST facility by the end of 2018 and start delivering high-level data products for both consortium and ESO community targets a year later with yearly increments.

Spin and angular resolved photoemission experiments on epitaxial graphene

Our recently reported spin and angular resolved photoemission (SARPES) results on an epitaxial graphene monolayer on SiC(0001) suggested the presence of a large Rashba-type spin splitting of Δk=(0.030+-0.005)1/A [1]. Although this value was orders of magnitude larger than predicted theoretically, it could be reconciled with the line width found in conventional spin-integrated high resolution angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. Here we present novel measurements for a hydrogen intercalated quasi free-standing graphene monolayer on SiC(0001) that reveal a spin polarization signal that - when interpreted in terms of the Rashba-Bychkov effect [2,3] - corresponds to a spin splitting of Δk=(0.024+-0.005)1/A. This splitting is significantly larger than the half width at half maximum of spin-integrated high resolution ARPES measurements which is a strong indication that the measured polarization signal does not originate from a Rashba-type spin splitting of the graphene pi-bands as we suggested in our previous report [1].

On the nature of steady states of spin distributions in the presence of spin-orbit interactions

In the presence of spin-orbit interactions, the steady state established for spin distributions in an electric field is qualitatively different from the steady state for charge distributions. This is primarily because the steady state established for spin distributions involves spin precession due to spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate in this work that the spin density matrix in an external electric field acquires two corrections with different dependencies on the characteristic momentum scattering time. One part is associated with conserved spins, diverges in the clean limit and is responsible for the establishment of a steady-state spin density in electric fields. Another part is associated with precessing spins, is finite in the clean limit and is responsible for the establishment of spin currents in electric fields. Scattering between these distributions has important consequences for spin dynamics and spin-related effects in general, and explains some recent puzzling observations, which are captured by our unified theory.

Spin polarization decay in spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 systems

We present a general unifying theory for spin polarization decay due to the interplay of spin precession and momentum scattering that is applicable to both spin-1/2 electrons and spin-3/2 holes. Our theory allows us to identify and characterize a wide range of qualitatively different regimes. For strong momentum scattering or slow spin precession we recover the D'yakonov-Perel result, according to which the spin relaxation time is inversely proportional to the momentum relaxation time. On the other hand, we find that, in the ballistic regime the carrier spin polarization shows a very different qualitative behavior. In systems with isotropic spin splitting the spin polarization can oscillate indefinitely, while in systems with anisotropic spin splitting the spin polarization is reduced by spin dephasing, which is non-exponential and may result in an incomplete decay of the spin polarization. For weak momentum scattering or fast spin precession, the oscillations or non-exponential spin dephasing are modulated by an exponential envelope proportional to the momentum relaxation time. Nevertheless, even in this case in certain systems a fraction of the spin polarization may survive at long times. Finally it is shown that, despite the qualitatively different nature of spin precession in the valence band, spin polarization decay in spin-3/2 hole systems has many similarities to its counterpart in spin-1/2 electron systems.
