Semi-Cosimplicial Hilbert Spaces with Isometric Coface Operators

Semi-cosimplicial objects in the category of Hilbert spaces with isometries which are motivated by non-commutative probability theory, in particular by the distributional symmetry of spreadability, are introduced and systematically developed in various directions: partial shifts, cohomology, Hessenberg form, a related graph, decomposition into labeled subspaces, representation theory of the infinite symmetric and braid groups, classification and extensions for semi-cosimplicial sets with injective coface maps and a toy version of spreadability.

Universal Preparability of States and Asymptotic Completeness

We introduce a notion of universal preparability for a state of a system, more precisely: for a normal state on a von Neumann algebra. It describes a situation where from an arbitrary initial state it is possible to prepare a target state with arbitrary precision by a repeated interaction with a sequence of copies of another system. For $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ we give criteria sufficient to ensure that all normal states are universally preparable which can be verified for a class of non-commutative birth and death processes realized, in particular, by the interaction of a micromaser with a stream of atoms. As a tool the theory of tight sequences of states and of stationary states is further developed and we show that in the presence of stationary faithful normal states universal preparability of all normal states is equivalent to asymptotic completeness, a notion studied earlier in connection with the scattering theory of non-commutative Markov processes.

Semi-Cosimplicial Objects and Spreadability

To a semi-cosimplicial object (SCO) in a category we associate a system of partial shifts on the inductive limit. We show how to produce an SCO from an action of the infinite braid monoid $\mathbb{B}^+_\infty$ and provide examples. In categories of (noncommutative) probability spaces SCOs correspond to spreadable sequences of random variables, hence SCOs can be considered as the algebraic structure underlying spreadability.

Weak Markov Processes as Linear Systems

A noncommutative Fornasini-Marchesini system (a multi-variable version of a linear system) can be realized within a weak Markov process (a model for quantum evolution). For a discrete time parameter the resulting structure is worked out systematically and some quantum mechanical interpretations are given. We introduce subprocesses and quotient processes and then the notion of a $γ$-extension for processes which leads to a complete classification of all the ways in which processes can be built from subprocesses and quotient processes. We show that within a $γ$-extension we have a cascade of noncommutative Fornasini-Marchesini systems. We study observability in this setting and as an application we gain new insights into stationary Markov chains where observability for the system is closely related to asymptotic completeness in a scattering theory for the chain.

A Trotter-Kato Theorem for Quantum Markov Limits

Using the Trotter-Kato theorem we prove the convergence of the unitary dynamics generated by an increasingly singular Hamiltonian in the case of a single field coupling. The limit dynamics is a quantum stochastic evolution of Hudson-Parthasarathy type, and we establish in the process a graph limit convergence of the pre-limit Hamiltonian operators to the Chebotarev-Gregoratti-von Waldenfels Hamiltonian generating the quantum Ito evolution.

Functional Models and Minimal Contractive Liftings

Based on a careful analysis of functional models for contractive multi-analytic operators we establish a one-to-one correspondence between unitary equivalence classes of minimal contractive liftings of a row contraction and injective symbols of contractive multi-analytic operators. This allows an effective construction and classification of all such liftings with given defects. Popescu's theory of characteristic functions of completely non-coisometric row contractions is obtained as a special case satisfying a Szegö condition. In another special case of single contractions and defects equal to $1$ all non-zero Schur functions on the unit disk appear in the classification. It is also shown that the process of constructing liftings iteratively reflects itself in a factorization of the corresponding symbols.

Transfer Functions for Pairs of Wandering Subspaces

To a pair of subspaces wandering with respect to a row isometry we associate a transfer function which in general is multi-Toeplitz and in interesting special cases is multi-analytic. Then we describe in an expository way how characteristic functions from operator theory as well as transfer functions from noncommutative Markov chains fit into this scheme.

Noncommutative Independence in the Infinite Braid and Symmetric Group

This is an introductory paper about our recent merge of a noncommutative de Finetti type result with representations of the infinite braid and symmetric group which allows to derive factorization properties from symmetries. We explain some of the main ideas of this approach and work out a constructive procedure to use in applications. Finally we illustrate the method by applying it to the theory of group characters.

Noncommutative Independence from Characters of the Infinite Symmetric Group $\mathbb{s}_\infty$

We provide an operator algebraic proof of a classical theorem of Thoma which characterizes the extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group $\mathbb{S}_\infty$. Our methods are based on noncommutative conditional independence emerging from exchangeability and we reinterpret Thoma's theorem as a noncommutative de Finetti type result. Our approach is, in parts, inspired by Jones' subfactor theory and by Okounkov's spectral proof of Thoma's theorem, and we link them by inferring spectral properties from certain commuting squares.

Decompositions of Beurling Type for E_0-Semigroups

We define tensor product decompositions of $E_0$-semigroups with a structure analogous to a classical theorem of Beurling. Such decompositions can be characterized by adaptedness and exactness of unitary cocycles. For CCR-flows we show that such cocycles are convergent.

Noncommutative independence from the braid group $B_\infty$

We introduce `braidability' as a new symmetry for (infinite) sequences of noncommutative random variables related to representations of the braid group $B_\infty$. It provides an extension of exchangeability which is tied to the symmetric group $S_\infty$. Our key result is that braidability implies spreadability and thus conditional independence, according to the noncommutative extended de Finetti theorem (of C. Köstler). This endows the braid groups $B_n$ with a new intrinsic (quantum) probabilistic interpretation. We underline this interpretation by a braided extension of the Hewitt-Savage Zero-One Law. Furthermore we use the concept of product representations of endomorphisms (of R. Gohm) with respect to certain Galois type towers of fixed point algebras to show that braidability produces triangular towers of commuting squares and noncommutative Bernoulli shifts. As a specific case we study the left regular representation of $B_\infty$ and the irreducible subfactor with infinite Jones index in the non-hyperfinite $II_1$-factor $L(B_\infty)$ related to it. Our investigations reveal a new presentation of the braid group $B_\infty$, the `square root of free generator presentation' $F_\infty^{1/2}$. These new generators give rise to braidability while the squares of them yield a free family. Hence our results provide another facet of the strong connection between subfactors and free probability theory and we speculate about braidability as an extension of (amalgamated) freeness on the combinatorial level.

Non-Commutative Markov Chains and Multi-Analytic Operators

We study a model of repeated interaction between quantum systems which can be thought of as a non-commutative Markov chain. It is shown that there exists an outgoing Cuntz scattering system associated to this model which induces an input-output formalism with a transfer function corresponding to a multi-analytic operator, in the sense of multivariate operator theory. Finally we show that observability for this system is closely related to the scattering theory of non-commutative Markov chains.

Characteristic Functions of Liftings

We introduce characteristic functions for certain contractive liftings of row contractions. These are multi-analytic operators which classify the liftings up to unitary equivalence and provide a kind of functional model. The most important cases are subisometric and coisometric liftings. We also identify the most general setting which we call reduced liftings. We derive properties of these new characteristic functions and discuss the relation to Popescu's definition for completely non-coisometric row contractions. Finally we apply our theory to completely positive maps and prove a one-to-one correspondence between the fixed point sets of completely positive maps related to each other by a subisometric lifting.

Characteristic Functions for Ergodic Tuples

Motivated by a result on weak Markov dilations, we define a notion of characteristic function for ergodic and coisometric row contractions with a one-dimensional invariant subspace for the adjoints. This extends a definition given by G. Popescu. We prove that our characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant for such tuples and show how it can be computed.

Constructing Extensions of CP-Maps via Tensor Dilations with the Help of Von Neumann Modules

We apply Hilbert module methods to show that normal completely positive maps admit weak tensor dilations. Appealing to a duality between weak tensor dilations and extensions of CP-maps, we get an existence proof for certain extensions. We point out that this duality is part of a far reaching duality between a von Neumann bimodule and its commutant in which also other dualities, known and new, find their natural common place.
