Automorphic Black Holes as Probes of Extra Dimensions

Recent progress in the understanding of the statistical nature of black hole entropy shows that the counting functions in certain classes of models are determined by automorphic forms of higher rank. In this paper we combine these results with Langlands' reciprocity conjecture to view black holes as probes of the geometry of spacetime. This point of view can be applied in any framework leading to automorphic forms, independently of the degree of supersymmetry of the models. In the present work we focus on the class of Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken compactifications defined as quotients associated to $\mathZ_N$ groups. We show that the black hole entropy of these CHL$_N$ models can be derived from elliptic motives, thereby providing the simplest possible geometric building blocks of the Siegel type entropy count.

String Modular Phases in Calabi-Yau Families

We investigate the structure of singular Calabi-Yau varieties in moduli spaces that contain a Brieskorn-Pham point. Our main tool is a construction of families of deformed motives over the parameter space. We analyze these motives for general fibers and explicitly compute the $L-$series for singular fibers for several families. We find that the resulting motivic $L-$functions agree with the $L-$series of modular forms whose weight depends both on the rank of the motive and the degree of the degeneration of the variety. Surprisingly, these motivic $L-$functions are identical in several cases to $L-$series derived from weighted Fermat hypersurfaces. This shows that singular Calabi-Yau spaces of non-conifold type can admit a string worldsheet interpretation, much like rational theories, and that the corresponding irrational conformal field theories inherit information from the Gepner conformal field theory of the weighted Fermat fiber of the family. These results suggest that phase transitions via non-conifold configurations are physically plausible. In the case of severe degenerations we find a dimensional transmutation of the motives. This suggests further that singular configurations with non-conifold singularities may facilitate transitions between Calabi-Yau varieties of different dimensions.

String modular motives of mirrors of rigid Calabi-Yau varieties

The modular properties of some higher dimensional varieties of special Fano type are analyzed by computing the L-function of their $Ω-$motives. It is shown that the emerging modular forms are string theoretic in origin, derived from the characters of the underlying rational conformal field theory. The definition of the class of Fano varieties of special type is motivated by the goal to find candidates for a geometric realization of the mirrors of rigid Calabi-Yau varieties. We consider explicitly the cubic sevenfold and the quartic fivefold, and show that their motivic L-functions agree with the L-functions of their rigid mirror Calabi-Yau varieties. We also show that the cubic fourfold is string theoretic, with a modular form that is determined by that of an exactly solvable K3 surface.

Emergent spacetime from modular motives

The program of constructing spacetime geometry from string theoretic modular forms is extended to Calabi-Yau varieties of dimensions two, three, and four, as well as higher rank motives. Modular forms on the worldsheet can be constructed from the geometry of spacetime by computing the L-functions associated to omega motives of Calabi-Yau varieties, generated by their holomorphic $n-$forms via Galois representations. The modular forms that emerge from the omega motive and other motives of the intermediate cohomology are related to characters of the underlying rational conformal field theory. The converse problem of constructing space from string theory proceeds in the class of diagonal theories by determining the motives associated to modular forms in the category of motives with complex multiplication. The emerging picture indicates that the L-function can be interpreted as a map from the geometric category of motives to the category of conformal field theories on the worldsheet.

Applied String Theory

This is a review. Comments are welcome. The observation that the structure of string theory is rich enough to include the standard model in rough outline is an old one, starting with the early constructions of free field constructions, orbifold theories, and in particular Calabi-Yau compactifications in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At the time these constructions provided a large collection of different vacua, with thousands of explicitly constructed Calabi-Yau manifolds, and estimates of vast numbers of bosonic models, each one associated with its own moduli space. It was clear even then that it would be impossible to systematically search this string vacua landscape. This, however, is not a fundamental problem. Adopting the point of view that any physical theory has to describe not only our universe, but all possible consistent universes, leads to the obvious strategy of using some phenomenological input to select viable models among the ocean of models that obviously do not describe physics as we know it.

A modularity test for elliptic mirror symmetry

In this note a prediction of an algebraic mirror construction is checked for elliptic curves of Brieskorn-Pham type via number theoretic methods. It is shown that the modular forms associated to the Hasse-Weil L-series of mirror pairs of such curves are identical.

The Langlands Program and String Modular K3 Surfaces

A number theoretic approach to string compactification is developed for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in arbitrary dimensions. The motivic strategy involved is illustrated by showing that the Hecke eigenforms derived from Galois group orbits of the holomorphic two-form of a particular type of K3 surfaces can be expressed in terms of modular forms constructed from the worldsheet theory. The process of deriving string physics from spacetime geometry can be reversed, allowing the construction of K3 surface geometry from the string characters of the partition function. A general argument for K3 modularity follows from mirror symmetry, in combination with the proof of the Shimura-Taniyama conjecture.

Arithmetic Spacetime Geometry from String Theory

An arithmetic framework to string compactification is described. The approach is exemplified by formulating a strategy that allows to construct geometric compactifications from exactly solvable theories at $c=3$. It is shown that the conformal field theoretic characters can be derived from the geometry of spacetime, and that the geometry is uniquely determined by the two-dimensional field theory on the world sheet. The modular forms that appear in these constructions admit complex multiplication, and allow an interpretation as generalized McKay-Thompson series associated to the Mathieu and Conway groups. This leads to a string motivated notion of arithmetic moonshine.

Geometric Kac-Moody Modularity

It is shown how the arithmetic structure of algebraic curves encoded in the Hasse-Weil L-function can be related to affine Kac-Moody algebras. This result is useful in relating the arithmetic geometry of Calabi-Yau varieties to the underlying exactly solvable theory. In the case of the genus three Fermat curve we identify the Hasse-Weil L-function with the Mellin transform of the twist of a number theoretic modular form derived from the string function of a non-twisted affine Lie algebra. The twist character is associated to the number field of quantum dimensions of the conformal field theory.

Black Hole Attractor Varieties and Complex Multiplication

Black holes in string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau varieties a priori might be expected to have moduli dependent features. For example the entropy of the black hole might be expected to depend on the complex structure of the manifold. This would be inconsistent with known properties of black holes. Supersymmetric black holes appear to evade this inconsistency by having moduli fields that flow to fixed points in the moduli space that depend only on the charges of the black hole. Moore observed in the case of compactifications with elliptic curve factors that these fixed points are arithmetic, corresponding to curves with complex multiplication. The main goal of this talk is to explore the possibility of generalizing such a characterization to Calabi-Yau varieties with finite fundamental groups.

Complex Multiplication Symmetry of Black Hole Attractors

We show how Moore's observation, in the context of toroidal compactifications in type IIB string theory, concerning the complex multiplication structure of black hole attractor varieties, can be generalized to Calabi-Yau compactifications with finite fundamental groups. This generalization leads to an alternative general framework in terms of motives associated to a Calabi-Yau variety in which it is possible to address the arithmetic nature of the attractor varieties in a universal way via Deligne's period conjecture.

The Shimura-Taniyama Conjecture and Conformal Field Theory

The Shimura-Taniyama conjecture states that the Mellin transform of the Hasse-Weil L-function of any elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers is a modular form. Recent work of Wiles, Taylor-Wiles and Breuil-Conrad-Diamond-Taylor has provided a proof of this longstanding conjecture. Elliptic curves provide the simplest framework for a class of Calabi-Yau manifolds which have been conjectured to be exactly solvable. It is shown that the Hasse-Weil modular form determined by the arithmetic structure of the Fermat type elliptic curve is related in a natural way to a modular form arising from the character of a conformal field theory derived from an affine Kac-Moody algebra.

Aspects of Conformal Field Theory from Calabi-Yau Arithmetic

This paper describes a framework in which techniques from arithmetic algebraic geometry are used to formulate a direct and intrinsic link between the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and aspects of the underlying conformal field theory. As an application the algebraic number field determined by the fusion rules of the conformal field theory is derived from the number theoretic structure of the cohomological Hasse-Weil L-function determined by Artin's congruent zeta function of the algebraic variety. In this context a natural number theoretic characterization arises for the quantum dimensions in this geometrically determined algebraic number field.

Arithmetic of Calabi-Yau Varieties and Rational Conformal Field Theory

It is proposed that certain techniques from arithmetic algebraic geometry provide a framework which is useful to formulate a direct and intrinsic link between the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and the underlying conformal field theory. Specifically it is pointed out how the algebraic number field determined by the fusion rules of the conformal field theory can be derived from the number theoretic structure of the cohomological Hasse-Weil L-function determined by Artin's congruent zeta function of the algebraic variety. In this context a natural number theoretic characterization arises for the quantum dimensions in this geometrically determined algebraic number field.

K3-fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds I, the twist map

A construction of Calabi-Yaus as quotients of products of lower-dimensional spaces in the context of weighted hypersurfaces is discussed, including desingularisation. The construction leads to Calabi-Yaus which have a fiber structure, in particular one case has K3 surfaces as fibers. These Calabi-Yaus are of some interest in connection with Type II -heterotic string dualities in dimension 4. A section at the end of the paper summarises this for the non-expert mathematician.

Landau-Ginzburg Vacua of String, M- and F-Theory at c=12

Theories in more than ten dimensions play an important role in understanding nonperturbative aspects of string theory. Consistent compactifications of such theories can be constructed via Calabi-Yau fourfolds. These models can be analyzed particularly efficiently in the Landau-Ginzburg phase of the linear sigma model, when available. In the present paper we focus on those sigma models which have both a Landau-Ginzburg phase and a geometric phase described by hypersurfaces in weighted projective five-space. We describe some of the pertinent properties of these models, such as the cohomology, the connectivity of the resulting moduli space, and mirror symmetry among the 1,100,055 configurations which we have constructed.

Scaling Behavior on the Space of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

Recent work is reviewed which suggests that certain universal quantities, defined for all Calabi-Yau manifolds, exhibit a specific behavior which is not present for general Kähler manifolds. The variables in question, natural from a mathematical perspective, are of physical importance because they determine aspects of the low-energy string physics in four dimensions, such as Yukawa couplings and threshold corrections. It is shown that these quantities, evaluated on the complete class of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective 4-space, exhibit scaling behavior with respect to a new scaling variable. (To appear in Mirror Symmetry II.)
