Propagation of Laguerre-Gaussian and Bessel-Gaussian scalar beams in an effective anisotropic background

We investigate the propagation of structured scalar optical beams in an effective anisotropic background inspired by the scalar sector of the Standard-Model Extension and controlled by a single dimensionless parameter $λ$. The physically relevant configuration is a transverse radial director field that modifies the radial part of the Helmholtz operator while preserving axial symmetry. Starting from the Green-function representation, we cast the propagation problem as an initial-value spectral reconstruction of a prescribed finite-aperture entrance profile at $z=0$ and verify that this profile is recovered at the launch plane across the values of $λ$ used in the analysis, within small numerical error. We use the Laguerre--Gaussian mode $L_3$ as the representative vortex-free Laguerre case, retain $L_4$ only as a quantitative benchmark for radial-order dependence, and compare both with a Bessel--Gaussian beam of input order $m=0$. The effective anisotropy produces a systematic redistribution of radial intensity, determines whether the central peak remains dominant or is overtaken by off-axis maxima as propagation advances, and controls the radial displacement of the dominant side lobes. For the finite-aperture Bessel--Gaussian beam, the same parameter quantifies how the approximately diffraction-resistant ring structure broadens for negative $λ$ and compresses for positive $λ$ during propagation.

Casimir effect in Plebański nonlinear electrodynamics with spontaneously Lorentz-breaking magnetic vacua

We study the Casimir effect in a class of gauge-invariant nonlinear electrodynamics models designed to admit spontaneously Lorentz-breaking magnetic vacua. The theory is formulated in the Plebański first-order representation, with a single-invariant Hamiltonian potential \(\widehat V(P)\) as the fundamental nonlinear object. In this formulation, nontrivial magnetic vacua are stationary points of the reduced effective Hamiltonian. The symmetry-breaking condition is controlled by \(\Sm(P)\equiv\widehat V_P(P)+2P\widehat V_{PP}(P)\), which also controls the rank of the longitudinal magnetic response and of the Hamiltonian constraint structure. Taking this Lorentz-breaking nonlinear electrodynamics as the model under study, we analyze how the distinction between the regular constant-rank sector and the degenerate magnetic vacuum enters the parallel-plate Casimir spectrum. Linearization around a regular magnetic background \(\bar P\), with \(\Sm(\bar P)\neq0\), yields an ordinary Maxwell-like branch and an extraordinary anisotropic branch controlled by \(α(\bar P)=\widehat V_P(\bar P)/\Sm(\bar P)\). We compute the regularized Casimir energy for magnetic backgrounds perpendicular and parallel to the plates. In the regular-sector limit \(\bar P\to P_\star\), with \(\Sm(P_\star)=0\), the extraordinary branch becomes singular and the parallel-configuration energy diverges. This divergence is not an infinite physical Casimir force; it signals that the regular two-branch optical description cannot be continued uniformly to the rank-changing magnetic vacuum. Direct analysis on the degenerate surface shows that the extraordinary branch does not survive as an independent propagating mode for generic momenta. Thus, quantizing the regular theory and then taking \(\Sm\to0\) is not equivalent to imposing \(\Sm(P_\star)=0\) before quantization.

Stable Magnetic Lorentz-Violating Vacua in Gauge-Invariant Nonlinear Electrodynamics

We investigate gauge-invariant nonlinear electrodynamics in the Plebański first-order Hamiltonian formulation, taking the single-invariant potential $\hat V(P)$ as the primary object. Our focus is on the existence of stable Lorentz-violating magnetic vacua. For three explicit two-parameter models -- rational asymmetric, logarithmic, and exponential -- we determine the regions of parameter space in which nontrivial constant electromagnetic vacua are compatible with an effective Hamiltonian bounded from below and a positive-semidefinite Hessian. In all three cases, physically admissible Lorentz-violating vacua are realized in the magnetic branch. We further discuss the electric branch and several additional one-parameter models, illustrating that Hamiltonian boundedness by itself does not ensure spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. We also comment on how the symmetry-breaking conditions are related to known strong-field causality criteria.

Constitutive Origin of Hamiltonian Degeneracy in Nonlinear Electrodynamics with Spontaneous Lorentz Symmetry Breaking

In Plebański nonlinear electrodynamics with spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking, nontrivial magnetic backgrounds are selected by stationary points of an effective Hamiltonian. Previous branchwise Hamiltonian analyses showed that this same stationarity requirement coincides with the vanishing of the determinant of the Poisson-bracket matrix among the second-class constraints, but the structural origin of this coincidence was not manifest. We show that it follows from the constitutive origin of the theory. The structural potential \(V(P,Q)\) generates the electromagnetic constitutive relations, while the effective Hamiltonian for magnetic vacua is the complementary energy associated with the magnetic response at fixed \(\Dvec\). Moreover, because the first-order constitutive relation enters the Dirac constraint structure, the magnetic constitutive Jacobian appears as a local block of the Poisson-bracket matrix among the second-class constraints. This complementary-energy structure implies that every nontrivial magnetic stationary point lies on a surface where the linearized map \(δ\Hvec\mapstoδ\Bvec\), at fixed \(\Dvec\), loses rank. We use this interpretation to formulate the reduced linearized theory at the vacuum, discuss the removal of the radial mode in the vacuum-restricted theory, and clarify why electric and mixed stationary branches are obstructed in single-invariant models.

Casimir effect between semitransparent mirrors in a Lorentz-violating background

We investigate the Casimir effect for a massless scalar field confined between two parallel semitransparent mirrors in a vacuum modified by spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. Using Green's function techniques and a point-splitting evaluation of the stress-energy tensor, we compute the vacuum expectation value of the energy density $T_{00}$. After a suitable renormalization, the Casimir energy is obtained as the difference between the vacuum configurations with and without the mirrors. We derive closed-form expressions that generalize the conventional result by simultaneously incorporating the mirror transparency and the Lorentz-violating background. Our analysis shows that the effect of transparency and Lorentz violation consists of a multiplicative correction and an effective rescaling of the plate separation, thereby modifying the functional dependence of the energy on the distance. Beyond the formal derivation, we discuss possible physical realizations of this framework, emphasizing anisotropic media such as nematic liquid crystals (e.g., 5CB), where uniaxial dielectric properties could emulate the Lorentz-violating background. Numerical estimates for such systems illustrate the phenomenological impact of our results and open the possibility of constraining Lorentz-violating coefficients through precision Casimir measurements.

The SUSY partners of the QES sextic potential revisited

In this paper, the SUSY partner Hamiltonians of the quasi-exactly solvable (QES) sextic potential $V^{\rm qes}(x) = ν\, x^{6} + 2\, ν\, μ\,x^{4} + \left[μ^2-(4N+3)ν\right]\, x^{2}$, $N \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, are revisited from a Lie algebraic perspective. It is demonstrated that, in the variable $ τ=x^2$, the underlying $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$ hidden algebra of $V^{\rm qes}(x)$ is inherited by its SUSY partner potential $V_1(x)$ only for $N=0$. At fixed $N>0$, the algebraic polynomial operator $h(x,\,\partial_x;\,N)$ that governs the $N$ exact eigenpolynomial solutions of $V_1$ is derived explicitly. These odd-parity solutions appear in the form of zero modes. The potential $V_1$ can be represented as the sum of a polynomial and rational parts. In particular, it is shown that the polynomial component is given by $V^{\rm qes}$ with a different non-integer (cohomology) parameter $N_1=N-\frac{3}{2}$. A confluent second-order SUSY transformation is also implemented for a modified QES sextic potential possessing the energy reflection symmetry. By taking $N$ as a continuous real constant and using the Lagrange-mesh method, highly accurate values ($\sim 20$ s. d.) of the energy $E_n=E_n(N)$ in the interval $N \in [-1,3]$ are calculated for the three lowest states $n=0,1,2$ of the system. The critical value $N_c$ above which tunneling effects (instanton-like terms) can occur is obtained as well. At $N=0$, the non-algebraic sector of the spectrum of $V^{\rm qes}$ is described by means of compact physically relevant trial functions. These solutions allow us to determine the effects in accuracy when the first-order SUSY approach is applied on the level of approximate eigenfunctions.

Critical phenomena in light-matter systems with collective matter interactions

We study the quantum phase diagram and the onset of quantum critical phenomena in a generalized Dicke model that includes collective qubit-qubit interactions. By employing semiclassical techniques, we analyze the corresponding classical energy surfaces, fixed points, and the smooth Density of States as a function of the Hamiltonian parameters to determine quantum phase transitions in either the ground (QPT) or excited states (ESQPT). We unveil a rich phase diagram, the presence of new phases, and new transitions that result from varying the strength of the qubits interactions in independent canonical directions. We also find a correspondence between the phases emerging due to qubit interactions and those in their absence but with varying the strength of the non-resonant terms in the light-matter coupling. We expect our work to pave the way and stimulate the exploration of quantum criticality in systems combining matter-matter and light-matter interactions.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in models with second-class constraints

In this work the spontaneous symmetry breaking in certain nonlinear theories with second-class constraints is explored. Using the Dirac's method we perform an analysis of the constraints and the counting of the degrees of freedom. The corresponding effective Hamiltonian is constructed explicitly. It is shown that on the surfaces where the effective Hamiltonian takes critical values the symplectic structure becomes degenerate. In particular, we demonstrate that under the condition of spontaneous symmetry breaking, which implies non trivial vacuum surfaces, second-class constraints behave as first-class ones on certain regions of the phase space, leading to undefined Dirac's brackets and to the modification of the number of degrees of freedom. As a physical consequence, these models can suffer from certain pathologies such as the existence of modes with an acausal propagation. Concrete examples where this phenomena occurs are described in detail.

Testing the scalar sector of the Standard-Model Extension with neutron gravity experiments

In the present study we analyse, within the scalar sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) framework, the influence of a spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking on gravitational quantum states of ultracold neutrons. The model is framed according to the laboratory conditions of the recent high-sensitivity GRANIT and $q$Bounce experiments. The high-precision data achieved in such experiments allow us to set bounds on the symmetry breaking parameters of the model. The effective Hamiltonian governing the neutron's motion along the axis of free fall is derived explicitly. It describes a particle in a gravitational field with an effective gravitational constant controlled non-trivially by the Lorentz-violating parameters. In particular, using the exact wave functions and the energy spectrum, we evaluate both the heights associated with the quantum states and the transition frequencies between neighborhoring quantum states. By comparing our theoretical results with those reported in the GRANIT and the $q$Bounce experiments, upper bounds on the Lorentz-violating parameters are determined. We also consider for the first time the gravity-induced interference pattern in a COW-type experiment to test Lorenz-invariance. In this case, an upper bound for the parameters is established as well.

Hamiltonian analysis of ModMax nonlinear electrodynamics in the first order formalism

In this work we study the so-called ModMax nonlinear electrodynamics, which is a novel model designed to preserve duality rotations and conformal transformations, such as the Maxwell's equations do. This model allows to study diverse gravitational phenomena when is coupled to General Relativity, in particular charged black holes and gravitational waves. In the present work we focus in the dynamics and Hamiltonian analysis of the model. Specifically, we analyze the propagation of the discontinuities of the field and obtain the corresponding dispersion relations. To perform the Hamiltonian analysis we adopt the first order formalism develop by Plebański and follow the Dirac method for theories with constraints. We derive the effective Hamiltonian, classify all the constraints and identify the degrees of freedom. We prove that the effective Hamiltonian is strictly bounded from below and investigate the existence of non trivial minima.

Nonlinear extensions of gravitating dyons: from NUT wormholes to Taub-Bolt instantons

Recent work has shown the existence of a unique nonlinear extension of electromagnetism which preserves conformal symmetry and allows for the freedom of duality rotations. Moreover, black holes and gravitational waves have been found to exist in this nonlinearly extended electrovacuum. We generalise these dyonic black holes in two major ways: with the relaxation of their horizon topology and with the inclusion of magnetic mass. Motivated by recent attention to traversable wormholes, we use this new family of Taub-NUT spaces to construct AdS wormholes. We explore some thermodynamic features by using a semi-classical approach. Our results show that a phase transition between the nut and bolt configurations arises in a similar way to the Maxwellian case.

Scalar Casimir effect for a conducting cylinder in a Lorentz violating background

Following a field-theoretical approach, we study the scalar Casimir effect upon a perfectly conducting cylindrical shell in the presence of spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. The scalar field is modeled by a Lorentz-breaking extension of the theory for a real scalar quantum field in the bulk regions. The corresponding Green's functions satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the cylindrical shell are derived explicitly. We express the Casimir pressure (i.e. the vacuum expectation value of the normal-normal component of the stress-energy tensor) as a suitable second-order differential operator acting on the corresponding Green's functions at coincident arguments. The divergences are regulated by making use of zeta function techniques, and our results are successfully compared with the Lorentz invariant case. Numerical calculations are carried out for the Casimir pressure as a function of the Lorentz-violating coefficient, and an approximate analytical expression for the force is presented as well. It turns out that the Casimir pressure strongly depends on the Lorentz-violating coefficient and it tends to diminish the force.

Black holes and gravitational waves sourced by non-linear duality rotation-invariant conformal electromagnetic matter

Maxwell's equations are invariant under both duality rotations and conformal transformations. Recently Bandos, Lechner, Sorokin, and Townsend have found a nonlinear generalisation of electrodynamics which possesses both of these symmetries. We couple this theory to General Relativity and explore self-gravitating configurations with a clear physical interpretation. We find charged black holes and exact gravitational waves. The black hole geometry is Reissner-Nordström, however, the non-linearity parameter acts as a screening factor allowing extremal configurations where the mass of the black hole is smaller than its charge. Furthermore, we also discuss the phenomenon of birefringence and determine the optical metrics associated to the propagation of photons.

Thermodynamical properties of a noncommutative anti-de Sitter-Einstein-Born-Infeld spacetime from gauge theory of gravity

We construct a deformed adS-Einstein-Born-Infeld black hole from noncommutative gauge theory of gravity and determine the metric coefficients up to second order on the noncommutative parameter. We analyse the modifications on the thermodynamical properties of the black hole due to the noncommutative contributions, and we show that noncommutativity has as a direct consequence, the removal of critical points.

The rigid body and the pendulum revisited

In this paper we revisit the construction by which the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry of the Euler equations allows to obtain the simple pendulum from the rigid body. We begin reviewing the original relation found by Holm and Marsden in which, starting from the two Casimir functions of the extended rigid body with Lie algebra $ISO(2)$ and introducing a proper momentum map, it is possible to obtain both the Hamiltonian and equations of motion of the pendulum. Important in this construction is the fact that both Casimirs have the geometry of an elliptic cylinder. By considering the whole $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry group, in this contribution we give all possible combinations of the Casimir functions and the corresponding momentum maps that produce the simple pendulum, showing that this system can also appear when the geometry of one of the Casimirs is given by a hyperbolic cylinder and the another one by an elliptic cylinder. As a result we show that from the extended rigid body with Lie algebra $ISO(1,1)$, it is possible to obtain the pendulum but only in circulating movement. Finally, as a by product of our analysis we provide the momentum maps that give origin to the pendulum with an imaginary time. Our discussion covers both the algebraic and the geometric point of view.

Classification of the classical $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ gauge transformations in the rigid body

In this paper we revisit the classification of the gauge transformations in the Euler top system using the generalized classical Hamiltonian dynamics of Nambu. In this framework the Euler equations of motion are bi-Hamiltonian and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ linear combinations of the two Hamiltonians leave the equations of motion invariant, although belonging to inequivalent Lie-Poisson structures. Here we give the explicit form of the Hamiltonian vector fields associated to the components of the angular momentum for every single Lie-Poisson structure including both the asymmetric rigid bodies and its symmetric limits. We also give a detailed classification of the different Lie-Poisson structures recovering all the ones reported previously in the literature.

Duality symmetries behind solutions of the classical simple pendulum

The solutions that describe the motion of the classical simple pendulum have been known for very long time and are given in terms of elliptic functions, which are doubly periodic functions in the complex plane. The independent variable of the solutions is time and it can be considered either as a real variable or as a purely imaginary one, which introduces a rich symmetry structure in the space of solutions. When solutions are written in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions the symmetry is codified in the functional form of its modulus, and is described mathematically by the six dimensional coset group $Γ/Γ(2)$ where $Γ$ is the modular group and $Γ(2)$ is its congruence subgroup of second level. In this paper we discuss the physical consequences this symmetry has on the pendulum motions and it is argued they have similar properties to the ones termed as duality symmetries in other areas of physics, such as field theory and string theory. In particular a single solution of pure imaginary time for all allowed value of the total mechanical energy is given and obtained as the $S$-dual of a single solution of real time, where $S$ stands for the $S$ generator of the modular group.
