The word problem in verbal products of groups

We prove that nilpotent and metabelian products of groups with decidable word problem have decidable word problem. In contrast, we exhibit families of groups with decidable word problem for which their solvable product have undecidable word problem. In doing so, we exhibit hyperbolic groups with undecidable membership problem in its derived subgroups.

Effective Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem for global fields

We prove an effective form of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for polynomials over a global field $K$. More precisely, we give effective bounds for the number of specializations $t\in \mathcal{O}_K$ that do not preserve the irreducibility or the Galois group of a given irreducible polynomial $F(T,Y)\in K[T,Y]$. The bounds are explicit in the height and degree of the polynomial $F(T,Y)$, and are optimal in terms of the size of the parameter $t\in \mathcal{O}_K$. Our proofs deal with the function field and number field cases in a unified way.

Permanence properties of verbal products and verbal wreath products of groups

By means of analyzing the notion of verbal products of groups, we show that soficity, hyperlinearity, amenability, the Haagerup property, the Kazhdan's property (T) and exactness are preserved under taking $k$-nilpotent products of groups, while being orderable is not preserved. We also study these properties for solvable and for Burnside products of groups. We then show that if two discrete groups are sofic, or have the Haagerup property, their restricted verbal wreath product arising from nilpotent, solvable and certain Burnside products is also sofic or has the Haagerup property respectively. We also prove related results for hyperlinear, linear sofic and weakly sofic approximations. Finally, we give applications combining our work with the Shmelkin embedding to show that certain quotients of free groups are sofic or have the Haagerup property.

Metric approximations of unrestricted wreath products when the acting group is amenable

We give a simple and unified proof showing that the unrestricted wreath product of a weakly sofic, sofic, linear sofic, or hyperlinear group by an amenable group is weakly sofic, sofic, linear sofic, or hyperlinear, respectively. By means of the Kaloujnine-Krasner theorem, this implies that group extensions with amenable quotients preserve the four aforementioned metric approximation properties. We also discuss the case of co-amenable groups.

Uniform bounds for the number of rational points on varieties over global fields

We extend the work of Salberger; Walsh; Castryck, Cluckers, Dittmann and Nguyen; and Vermeulen to prove the uniform dimension growth conjecture of Heath-Brown and Serre for varieties of degree at least $4$ over global fields. As an intermediate step, we generalize the bounds of Bombieri and Pila to curves over global fields and in doing so we improve the $B^{\varepsilon}$ factor by a $\log(B)$ factor.

The inverse sieve problem for algebraic varieties over global fields

Let $K$ be a global field and let $Z$ be a geometrically irreducible algebraic variety defined over $K$. We show that if a big set $S\subseteq Z$ of rational points of bounded height occupies few residue classes modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ for many prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$, then a positive proportion of $S$ must lie in the zero set of a polynomial of low degree that does not vanish at $Z$. This generalizes the main result of Walsh in [Duke Math. J., vol.161, (2012), 2001-2022].

A note on the classification of Gamma factors

One of the earliest invariants introduced in the study of finite von Neumann algebras is the property Gamma of Murray and von Neumann. In this note we prove that it is not possible to classify separable $\rm{II}_1$ factors satisfying the property Gamma up to isomorphism by a Borel measurable assignment of countable structures as invariants. We also show that the same holds true for the full $\rm{II}_1$ factors.

Non-classification of free Araki-Woods factors and $τ$-invariants

We define the standard Borel space of free Araki-Woods factors and prove that their isomorphism relation is not classifiable by countable structures. We also prove that equality of $τ$-topologies, arising as invariants of type III factors, as well as coycle and outer conjugacy of actions of abelian groups on free product factors are not classifiable by countable structures.
