Equations of state of magnesium perovskite and postperovskite: diagnostics from ab initio simulations

The isothermal compression of magnesium perovskite and postperovskite is examined through the F-f plot and the diagnostic plot of Vinet universal model theoretically from the ab initio quantum-mechanical calculations at the hybrid Hartree-Fock / Density Functional Theory level. A purely numerical approach, first time applied in this paper, shows that the discrepancies largely observed between studies on the perovskite and criticized in geophysical applications are due to the inadequate choice of the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state; meanwhile the Vinet model is found utterly appropriate for the mineral and infers consistent estimations of the bulk modulus and its pressure derivative. The diagnostics of the postperovskite suggest similar conclusions.

The impact of phonon dispersion on thermodynamical properties in computational models of crystalline solids

The existing techniques of account for the phonon dispersion are computationally costly, while its impact on a variety of thermodynamic properties appears negligible. We develop a mathematical formalism, which allows for clear understanding of the effect. The theoretical elaborations are then confronted with a widely used phenomenological model of the dispersion relation. The results show that accuracy of the models, which neglect the phonon dispersion, allows for calculation of many thermodynamic quantities up to an admissible precision. Although the context refers mainly to the Helmholtz energy , other properties are concerned as well with less details. Time-efficient schemes of control over the accuracy loss due to the neglected phonon dispersion are discussed.

Statistical distribution of bonding distances in a unidimensional solid

We study a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-like chain with realistic potentials, which models a unidimensional solid in contact with heat baths at some temperature. We formulate an explicit analytical expression for the probability density of bonding distances between neighbor particles, which depends on temperature similarly to the distribution of velocities. Its validity is verified with a striking accuracy through simulations.
