A realist theory of digital objects, digital systems, and digitalized systems

As human reliance on information technology (IT) increases, having a clear, precise, and comprehensive understanding of the nature of digital objects, digital systems, and digitalized systems becomes more critical. Otherwise, our ability to research, manage, control, and make reliable predictions about them will be limited. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a new theory of digital objects, digital systems, and digitalized systems based on the adoption, adaptation, and extension of existing theories of ontology, semantics, and semiotics. The theory provides precise explanations of the nature of digital objects, digital systems, and digitalized systems. Ours is a realist theory that does not countenance the independent existence of nonmaterial or hybrid objects in the world. Accordingly, we are at odds with much of the prevailing discourse about digital phenomena. We show how our theory generates different insights and predictions from this the dominant discourse on the nature of the digital. Our predictions lay the groundwork for further empirical studies on the design, use, and impact of IT on individuals, organizations, and society.

Generative Artificial Intelligence for Literature Reviews

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), based on large-language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, has taken organizations, academia, and the public by storm. In particular, impressive GenAI capabilities such as summarization of large text corpora, question-answering, data extraction, and translation, carry profound implications for the conduct of literature reviews. This impacts science, organizations and the general public, as all can benefit from GenAI-supported literature reviews. Building on the technical foundations of GenAI and grounded in established methodological discourse, this work outlines approaches for conducting literature reviews using both general-purpose (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) and specialized GenAI tools (e.g., Consensus, Elicit). We provide illustrative examples of prompts and suggest methodologically-sound literature review strategies. Throughout this perspective paper, we adopt a balanced approach considering both the opportunities and the risks of relying on GenAI in the conduct of literature reviews. We conclude by discussing philosophical questions related to the effects of GenAI on long-term scientific progress, and also present fruitful opportunities for research on improving the core of GenAI's technology-its architecture and training data-and suggest open issues in GenAI-based literature reviews methodology.

Generative Artificial Intelligence: Evolving Technology, Growing Societal Impact, and Opportunities for Information Systems Research

The continuing, explosive developments in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), built on large language models and related algorithms, has led to much excitement and speculation about the potential impact of this new technology. Claims include AI being poised to revolutionize business and society and dramatically change personal life. However, it remains unclear exactly how this technology, with its significantly distinct features from past AI technologies, has transformative potential. Nor is it clear how researchers in information systems (IS) should respond. In this paper, we consider the evolving and emerging trends of AI in order to examine its present and predict its future impacts. Many existing papers on GenAI are either too technical for most IS researchers or lack the depth needed to appreciate the potential impacts of GenAI. We, therefore, attempt to bridge the technical and organizational communities of GenAI from a system-oriented sociotechnical perspective. Specifically, we explore the unique features of GenAI, which are rooted in the continued change from symbolism to connectionism, and the deep systemic and inherent properties of human-AI ecosystems. We retrace the evolution of AI that proceeded the level of adoption, adaption, and use found today, in order to propose future research on various impacts of GenAI in both business and society within the context of information systems research. Our efforts are intended to contribute to the creation of a well-structured research agenda in the IS community to support innovative strategies and operations enabled by this new wave of AI.

The MAGIC of Data Management: Understanding the Value and Activities of Data Management

In an era dominated by information technology, the critical discipline of data management remains undervalued compared to the innovations it enables, such as artificial intelligence and social media. The ambiguity surrounding what constitutes data management and its associated activities complicates efforts to explain its importance and ensure data are collected, stored and used in a way that maximizes value and avoids failures. This paper aims to address these shortcomings by presenting a simple framework for understanding data management, referred to as MAGIC. MAGIC encompasses five key activities: Modeling, Acquisition, Governance, Infrastructuring, and Consumption support tasks. By delineating these components, the MAGIC framework provides a clear, accessible approach to data management that can be used for teaching, research and practice.

Citizen Science: An Information Quality Research Frontier

The rapid proliferation of online content producing and sharing technologies resulted in an explosion of user-generated content (UGC), which now extends to scientific data. Citizen science, in which ordinary people contribute information for scientific research, epitomizes UGC. Citizen science projects are typically open to everyone, engage diverse audiences, and challenge ordinary people to produce data of highest quality to be usable in science. This also makes citizen science a very exciting area to study both traditional and innovative approaches to information quality management. With this paper we position citizen science as a leading information quality research frontier. We also show how citizen science opens a unique opportunity for the information systems community to contribute to a broad range of disciplines in natural and social sciences and humanities.

Falsification or Confirmation: From Logic to Psychology

Corroboration or confirmation is a prominent philosophical debate of the 20th century. Many philosophers have been involved in this debate most notably the proponents of confirmation led by Hempel and its most powerful criticism by the falsificationists led by Popper. In both cases however the debates were primarily based on the arguments from logic. In this paper we review these debates and suggest that a different perspective on falsification versus confirmation can be taken by grounding arguments in cognitive psychology.
