A generic new platform for topological quantum computation using semiconductor heterostructures

We show that a film of a semiconductor such as GaAs, in which s-wave superconductivity and a Zeeman splitting are induced by proximity effect, supports zero-energy Majorana fermion modes in the ordinary vortex excitations. The key to the topological order is the existence of spin-orbit coupling, coexisting with proximity-induced s-wave superconductivity. Since time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, the edge of the film constitutes a chiral Majorana wire. The heterostructure we propose -- a semiconducting thin film sandwiched between an s-wave superconductor and a magnetic insulator -- is a generic system which can be used as the platform for topological quantum computation by virtue of the existence of non-Abelian Majorana fermions.

Frequency and temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall conductivity in a chiral px+ipy superconductor with impurities

We calculate frequency and temperature dependence of the anomalous ac Hall conductivity induced by impurity scattering in a chiral px+ipy superconductor, such as Sr2RuO4, with spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking in the absence of an external magnetic field. We consider two models of disorder, Gaussian and non-Gaussian, characterized by the second and third moments of the random impurity potential, respectively. Within both models, we find that the anomalous Hall conductivity has a finite real value at zero frequency, exhibits singularities at the threshold of photon absorption across the superconducting gap, and decays as some power of the high frequency Ω. The Hall conductivity increases linearly with the decrease of temperature below the superconducting transition and saturates at zero temperature. Using our results for the high-frequency Hall conductivity, we estimate the polar Kerr angle for light reflection from the material and compare it with the experimental measurements in Sr2RuO4 by Xia et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 167002 (2006).

Splitting of Majorana modes due to intervortex tunneling in a p + ip superconductor

We consider a two-dimensional px+i py superconductor in the presence of multiple vortices, which support zero-energy Majorana fermion states in their cores. Intervortex tunnelings of the Majorana fermions lift the topological state degeneracy. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we calculate splitting of the zero-energy modes due to these tunneling events. We also discuss superconducting fluctuations and, in particular, their effect on the energy splitting.

Effects of a dilute gas of fermions on the superfluid-insulator phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model

Building on the work of Fisher et al. (Phys. Rev. B 40, 546 (1989)), we develop a framework for perturbation theory in the Bose-Hubbard model and apply it to calculate the effects of a degenerate gas of spin-polarized fermions interacting by contact interactions with the constituent bosons. For the single-band Bose-Hubbard model, the only non-trivial effect of the fermions is to induce an effective space- and time-dependent density-density interaction among the bosons. Using a path integral formulation, we develop the appropriate theory describing the perturbative effects of this fermion-mediated interaction (fermionic screening) on the generic superfluid-insulator phase diagram. For the single-band Bose-Hubbard model, we find that the net effect of the fermions is to inherently suppress the Mott-insulating lobes and enhance the area occupied by the superfluid phase in the phase diagram. For the more general multi-band Bose-Hubbard model, we find that, in addition to the fermion screening of the boson interactions, the virtual excitations of the bosons to the higher Bloch bands coupled with the contact interactions with the fermions result in an effective increase of the boson on-site repulsion. If this renormalization of the boson on-site potential is dominant over the fermion screening of the boson interactions, the area of the Mott insulating lobes of the Bose-Hubbard phase diagram will be enhanced for either sign of the boson-fermion interactions, as seen in recent experiments.

Loss of superfluidity by fermions in the boson Hubbard model on an optical lattice

The experimentally observed loss of superfluidity by introducing fermions to the boson Hubbard system on an optical lattice is explained. We show that the virtual transitions of the bosons to the higher Bloch bands, coupled with the contact boson-fermion interactions of either sign, result in an effective increase of the boson on-site repulsion. If this renormalization of the on-site potential is dominant over the fermion screening of the boson interactions, the Mott insulating lobes of the Bose-Hubbard phase diagram will be enhanced for either sign of the boson-fermion interactions. We discuss implications for cold atom experiments where the expansion of the Mott lobes by fermions has been conclusively established.

Dissipation-driven quantum phase transition in superconductor-graphene systems

We show that a system of Josephson junctions coupled via low-resistance tunneling contacts to graphene substrate(s) may effectively operate as a current switching device. The effect is based on the dissipation-driven superconductor-to-insulator quantum phase transition, which happens due to the interplay of the Josephson effect and Coulomb blockade. Coupling to a graphene substrate with gapless excitations further enhances charge fluctuations favoring superconductivity. The effect is shown to scale exponentially with the Fermi energy in graphene, which can be controlled by the gate voltage. We develop a theory, which quantitatively describes the quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional Josephson junction array, but it is expected to provide a reliable qualitative description for one-dimensional systems as well. We argue that the local effect of dissipation-induced enhancement of superconductivity is very robust and a similar sharp crossover should be present in finite Josephson junction chains.

Gauge-invariant electromagnetic response of a chiral px+ipy superconductor

We present a gauge-invariant theory of the electromagnetic response of a chiral px+ipy superconductor in the clean limit. Due to the spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry, the effective action of the system contains an anomalous term not present in conventional superconductors. As a result, the electromagnetic charge and current responses contain anomalous terms, which depend explicitly on the chirality of the superconducting order parameter. These terms lead to a number of unusual effects, such as coupling of the transverse currents to the collective plasma oscillations and a possibility of inducing the charge density by the magnetic field perpendicular to the conducting planes. We calculate the antisymmetric part of the conductivity tensor (the intrinsic Hall conductivity) and show that it depends on the wave vector of the electromagnetic field. We also show that the Mermin-Muzikar magnetization current and the Hall conductivity are strongly suppressed at high frequencies. Finally, we discuss implications of the theory to the experiments in Sr2RuO4.
