On weak solutions of a control-volume model for liquid films flowing down a fibre

This paper presents an analytical investigation of the solutions to a control volume model for liquid films flowing down a vertical fibre. The evolution of the free surface is governed by a coupled system of degenerate nonlinear partial differential equations, which describe the fluid film's radius and axial velocity. We demonstrate the existence of weak solutions to this coupled system by applying a priori estimates derived from energy-entropy functionals. Additionally, we establish the existence of traveling wave solutions for the system. To illustrate our analytical findings, we present numerical studies that showcase the dynamic solutions of the partial differential equations as well as the traveling wave solutions.

Asymptotic decay towards steady states of solutions to very fast and singular diffusion equations

We analyze long-time behavior of solutions to a class of problems related to very fast and singular diffusion porous medium equations having nonhomogeneous in space and time source terms with zero mean. In dimensions two and three, we determine critical values of porous medium exponent for the asymptotic $H^1$-convergence of the solutions to a unique nonhomogeneous positive steady state generally to hold.

Existence and stability analysis of solutions for a ultradian glucocorticoid rhythmicity and acute stress model

The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis responds to physical and mental challenge to maintain homeostasis in part by controlling the body's cortisol level. Dysregulation of the HPA axis is implicated in numerous stress-related diseases. For a structured model of the HPA axis that includes the glucocorticoid receptor but does not take into account the system response delay, we analyze linear and non-linear stability of stationary solutions. For a second mathematical model that describes the mechanism of the HPA axis self-regulatory activities and takes into account a delay of system response, we prove existence of periodic solutions under certain assumptions on ranges of parameter values and analyze stability of these solutions with respect to the time delay value.

Long-time behaviour of solutions to a singular heat equation with an application to hydrodynamics

In this paper, we extend the results of [1] by proving exponential asymptotic $H^1$-convergence of solutions to a one-dimensional singular heat equation with $L^2$-source term that describe evolution of viscous thin liquid sheets while considered in the Lagrange coordinates. Furthermore, we extend this asymptotic convergence result to the case of a time inhomogeneous source. This study has also independent interest for the porous medium equation theory.

Thin film flow dynamics on fiber nets

We analyze existence and qualitative behavior of non-negative weak solutions for fourth order degenerate parabolic equations on graph domains with Kirchhoff's boundary conditions at the inner nodes and Neumann boundary conditions at the boundary nodes. The problem is originated from industrial constructions of spray coated meshes which are used in water collection and in oil-water separation processes. For a certain range of parameter values we prove convergence toward a constant steady state that corresponds to the uniform distribution of coating on a fiber net.

Strong solutions of the thin film equation in spherical geometry

We study existence and long-time behaviour of strong solutions for the thin film equation using a priori estimates in a weighted Sobolev space. This equation can be classified as a doubly degenerate fourth-order parabolic and it models coating flow on the outer surface of a sphere. It is shown that the strong solution asymptotically decays to the flat profile.

Research Announcement: Finite-time Blow Up and Long-wave Unstable Thin Film Equations

We study short--time existence, long--time existence, finite speed of propagation, and finite--time blow--up of nonnegative solutions for long-wave unstable thin film equations $h_t = -a_0(h^n h_{xxx})_x - a_1(h^m h_x)_x$ with $n>0$, $a_0 > 0$, and $a_1 >0$. The existence and finite speed of propagation results extend those of [Comm Pure Appl Math 51:625--661, 1998]. For $0<n<2$ we prove the existence of a nonnegative, compactly--supported, strong solution on the line that blows up in finite time. The construction requires that the initial data be nonnegative, compactly supported in $\R^1$, be in $H^1(\R^1)$, and have negative energy. The blow-up is proven for a large range of $(n,m)$ exponents and extends the results of [Indiana Univ Math J 49:1323--1366, 2000].

New dissipated energy for nonnegative weak solution of unstable thin-film equations

The fluid thin film equation $h_t = - (h^n h_{xxx})_x - a_1\,(h^m h_x)_x$ is known to conserve mass $\int\,h \, dx$, and in the case of $a_1 \leq 0$, to dissipate entropy $\int\,h^{3/2 - n}\,dx$ (see [8]) and the $L^2$-norm of the gradient $\int\,h_x^2\,dx$ (see [3]). For the special case of $a_1 = 0$ a new dissipated quantity $\int\, h^α\,h_x^2\,dx $ was recently discovered for positive classical solutions by Laugesen (see [15]). We extend it in two ways. First, we prove that Laugesen's functional dissipates strong nonnegative generalized solutions. Second, we prove the full $α$-energy $\int\,\bigl(\frac{1}{2} \,h^α\, h_x^2\, - \frac{a_1\,h^{α+ m - n + 2}}{(α+ m - n + 1)(α+ m - n + 2)} \bigr)\, dx $ dissipation for strong nonnegative generalized solutions in the case of the unstable porous media perturbation $a_1> 0$ and the critical exponent $m = n+2$.

Finite speed of propagations of the electromagnetic field in nonlinear isotropic dispersive mediums

We propose some modification of Maxwell's equations describing mediums which electric and magnetic properties are changed essentially after interaction with outer electromagnetic field. We show for such mediums that electromagnetic waves have finite speed of propagations property for some time depending on initial energy of electromagnetic field and nonlinear parameters of the problem which are responsible for properties of medium.

Existence and behavior of asymmetric traveling wave solutions to thin film equation

We proved the existence and uniqueness of a traveling wave solution to the thin film equation with a Navier slip condition at the liquid-solid interface. We obtain explicit lower and upper bounds for the solution and an absolute error estimate of approximation of a solution to the thin films equation by the traveling-wave solution.
