Nilpotent groups of class two which underly a unique regular dessin

A dessin is an embedding of connected bipartite graph into an oriented closed surface. A dessin is regular if its group of colour- and orientation-preserving automorphisms acts transitively on the edges. In the present paper regular dessins with a nilpotent automorphism group are investigated, and attention are paid on those with the highest level of external symmetry. Depending on the algebraic theory of dessins and using group-theoretical methods, we present a classification of nilpotent groups of class two which underly a unique regular dessin.

Regular dessins uniquely determined by a nilpotent automorphism group

It is well known that the automorphism group of a regular dessin is a two-generator finite group, and the isomorphism classes of regular dessins with automorphism groups isomorphic to a given finite group $G$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the orbits of the action of $\Aut(G)$ on the ordered generating pairs of $G$. If there is only one orbit, then up to isomorphism the regular dessin is uniquely determined by the group $G$ and it is called uniquely regular. In the paper we investigate the classification of uniquely regular dessins with a nilpotent automorphism group. The problem is reduced to the classification of finite maximally automorphic $p$-groups $G$, i.e., the order of the automorphism group of $G$ attains Hall's upper bound. Maximally automorphic $p$-groups of nilpotency class three are classified.

3-connected Reduction for Regular Graph Covers

A graph $G$ covers a graph $H$ if there exists a locally bijective homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. We deal with regular coverings in which this homomorphism is prescribed by an action of a semiregular subgroup $Γ$ of $\textrm{Aut}(G)$; so $H \cong G / Γ$. In this paper, we study the behaviour of regular graph covering with respect to 1-cuts and 2-cuts in $G$. We describe reductions which produce a series of graphs $G = G_0,\dots,G_r$ such that $G_{i+1}$ is created from $G_i$ by replacing certain inclusion minimal subgraphs with colored edges. The process ends with a primitive graph $G_r$ which is either 3-connected, or a cycle, or $K_2$. This reduction can be viewed as a non-trivial modification of reductions of Mac Lane (1937), Trachtenbrot (1958), Tutte (1966), Hopcroft and Tarjan (1973), Cuningham and Edmonds (1980), Walsh (1982), and others. A novel feature of our approach is that in each step all essential information about symmetries of $G$ are preserved. A regular covering projection $G_0\to H_0$ induces regular covering projections $G_i \to H_i$ where $H_i$ is the $i$-th quotient reduction of $H_0$. This property allows to construct all possible quotients $H_0$ of $G_0$ from the possible quotients $H_r$ of $G_r$. By applying this method to planar graphs, we give a proof of Negami's Theorem (1988). Our structural results are also used in subsequent papers for regular covering testing when $G$ is a planar graph and for an inductive characterization of the automorphism groups of planar graphs (see Babai (1973) as well).

Recognizing and testing isomorphism of Cayley graphs over an abelian group of order $4p$ in polynomial time

We construct a polynomial-time algorithm that given a graph $X$ with $4p$ vertices ($p$ is prime), finds (if any) a Cayley representation of $X$ over the group $C_2\times C_2\times C_p$. This result, together with the known similar result for circulant graphs, shows that recognising and testing isomorphism of Cayley graphs over an abelian group of order $4p$ can be done in polynomial time.

Algorithmic Aspects of Regular Graph Covers

A graph $G$ covers a graph $H$ if there exists a locally bijective homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. We deal with regular covers where this homomorphism is prescribed by the action of a semiregular subgroup of $\textrm{Aut}(G)$. We study computational aspects of regular covers that have not been addressed before. The decision problem RegularCover asks for given graphs $G$ and $H$ whether $G$ regularly covers $H$. When $|H|=1$, this problem becomes Cayley graph recognition for which the complexity is still unresolved. Another special case arises for $|G| = |H|$ when it becomes the graph isomorphism problem. Our main result is an involved FPT algorithm solving RegularCover for planar inputs $G$ in time $O^*(2^{e(H)/2})$ where $e(H)$ denotes the number of edges of $H$. The algorithm is based on dynamic programming and employs theoretical results proved in a related structural paper. Further, when $G$ is 3-connected, $H$ is 2-connected or the ratio $|G|/|H|$ is an odd integer, we can solve the problem RegularCover in polynomial time. In comparison, Bílka et al. (2011) proved that testing general graph covers is NP-complete for planar inputs $G$ when $H$ is a small fixed graph such as $K_4$ or $K_5$.

Skew-morphisms of cyclic $p$-groups

Let $G$ be a finite group having a factorisation $G=AB$ into subgroups $A$ and $B$ with $B$ cyclic and $A\cap B=1,$ and let $b$ be a generator of $B$. The associated skew-morphism is the bijective mapping $f:A \to A$ well defined by the equality $baB=f(a)B$ where $a\in A$. In this paper, we shall classify all skew-morphisms of cyclic $p$-groups where $p$ is an odd prime.

Totally symmetric dessins with nilpotent automorphism groups of class three

A dessin is a 2-cell embedding of a connected bipartite graph into an orientable closed surface. An automorphism of a dessin is a permutation of the edges of the underlying graph which preserves the colouring of the vertices and extends to an orientation-preserving self-homeomorphism of the supporting surface. A dessin is regular if its automorphism group is transitive on the edges, and a regular dessin is totally symmetric if it is invariant under all dessin operations. Thus totally symmetric dessins possesses the highest level of external symmetry. In this paper we present a classification of totally symmetric dessins with a nilpotent automorphism group of class three

Nilpotent dessins: Decomposition theorem and classification of the abelian dessins

A map is a 2-cell decomposition of an orientable closed surface. A dessin is a bipartite map with a fixed colouring of vertices. A dessin is regular if its group of colour- and orientation-preserving automorphisms acts transitively on the edges, and a regular dessin is symmetric if it admits an additional external symmetry transposing the vertex colours. Regular dessins with nilpotent automorphism groups are investigated. We show that each such dessin is a parallel product of regular dessins whose automorphism groups are the Sylow subgroups. Regular and symmetric dessins with abelian automorphism groups are classified and enumerated.

Algorithmic Aspects of Regular Graph Covers with Applications to Planar Graphs

A graph $G$ covers a graph $H$ if there exists a locally bijective homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. We deal with regular covers in which this locally bijective homomorphism is prescribed by an action of a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(G)$. Regular covers have many applications in constructions and studies of big objects all over mathematics and computer science. We study computational aspects of regular covers that have not been addressed before. The decision problem RegularCover asks for two given graphs $G$ and $H$ whether $G$ regularly covers $H$. When $|H|=1$, this problem becomes Cayley graph recognition for which the complexity is still unresolved. Another special case arises for $|G| = |H|$ when it becomes the graph isomorphism problem. Therefore, we restrict ourselves to graph classes with polynomially solvable graph isomorphism. Inspired by Negami, we apply the structural results used by Babai in the 1970's to study automorphism groups of graphs. Our main result is the following FPT meta-algorithm: Let $\cal C$ be a class of graphs such that the structure of automorphism groups of 3-connected graphs in $\cal C$ is simple. Then we can solve RegularCover for $\cal C$-inputs $G$ in time $O^*(2^{e(H)/2})$ where $e(H)$ denotes the number of the edges of $H$. As one example of $\cal C$, this meta-algorithm applies to planar graphs. In comparison, testing general graph covers is known to be NP-complete for planar inputs $G$ even for small fixed graphs $H$ such as $K_4$ or $K_5$. Most of our results also apply to general graphs, in particular the complete structural understanding of regular covers for 2-cuts.

2-Groups that factorise as products of cyclic groups, and regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs

We classify those 2-groups G which factorise as a product of two disjoint cyclic subgroups A and B, transposed by an automorphism of order 2. The case where G is metacyclic having been dealt with elsewhere, we show that for each e>2 there are exactly three such non-metacyclic groups G with $|A|=|B|=2^e$, and for e=2 there is one. These groups appear in a classification by Berkovich and Janko of 2-groups with one non-metacyclic maximal subgroup; we enumerate these groups, give simpler presentations for them, and determine their automorphism groups.

Chirality Groups of Maps and Hypermaps

Although the phenomenon of chirality appears in many investigations of maps and hypermaps no detailed study of chirality seems to have been carried out. Chirality of maps and hypermaps is not merely a binary invariant but can be quantified by two new invariants -- the chirality group and the chirality index, the latter being the size of the chirality group. A detailed investigation of the chirality groups of maps and hypermaps will be the main objective of this paper. The most extreme type of chirality arises when the chirality group coincides with the monodromy group. Such hypermaps are called totally chiral. Examples of them are constructed by considering appropriate ``asymmetric'' pairs of generators for some non-abelian simple groups. We also show that every finite abelian group is the chirality group of some hypermap, whereas many non-abelian groups, including symmetric and dihedral groups, cannot arise as chirality groups.

2-symmetric transformations for 3-manifolds of genus two

As previously known, all 3-manifolds of genus two can be represented by edge-coloured graphs uniquely defined by 6-tuples of integers satisfying simple conditions. The present paper describes an ``elementary transformation'' on these 6-tuples which changes the associated graph but does not change the represented manifold. This operation is a useful tool in the classification problem for 3-manifolds of genus two; in fact, it allows to define an equivalence relation on ``admissible'' 6-tuples so that equivalent 6-tuples represent the same manifold. Different equivalence classes can represent the same manifold; however, equivalence classes ``almost always'' contain infinitely many 6-tuples. Finally, minimal representatives of the equivalence classes are described.
