Symmetry analysis and exact solutions of multi-layer quasi-geostrophic problem

We carry out an extended symmetry analysis of the multi-layer quasi-geostrophic problem. This model is given by a system of an arbitrary number of coupled barotropic vorticity equations. Conservation laws and a Hamiltonian structure for the general case of the model are correctly described for the first time. Using original methods, we compute the maximal Lie invariance algebra and the complete point-symmetry pseudogroup of the model. After classifying one- and two-dimensional subalgebras of the Lie invariance algebra, we exhaustively study codimension-one, -two and -three Lie reductions. Notably, among invariant submodels of the original nonlinear model, we obtain uncoupled systems of well-known linear equations, including the Helmholtz, modified Helmholtz, Laplace, Klein-Gordon, Whittaker, Bessel and linearized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equations. Integration of these systems significantly depends on spectral properties of the model's vertical coupling matrix, which we also revisit in detail. As a result, we construct wide families of exact solutions, including rediscovered representations of stationary and travelling baroclinic Rossby waves, coherent baroclinic eddies, hetons and localized dipolar vortices. We illustrate the physical relevance of obtained solutions using real-world geophysical data for a three-layer ocean model.

Hidden symmetries, hidden conservation laws and exact solutions of dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation

Among Lie submodels of the (real symmetric potential) dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation, we single out a remarkable submodel as such that, despite being the only one, is associated with a family of in general inequivalent one-dimensional subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of this equation, which are parameterized by an arbitrary function of the time variable. The large family of invariant solutions of the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation that are related to the above submodel is expressed in terms of an arbitrary function of the time variable and the double quadrature of the well-known (implicit) general solution of the inviscid Burgers equation with respect to a space-like submodel invariant variable. The singled out submodel possesses many other interesting properties. In particular, we show that it is Lie-remarkable, and its maximal Lie invariance algebra completely defines its point symmetry pseudogroup, which provides the second but simpler example of the latter phenomenon in literature. Moreover, only hidden Lie symmetries of the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation that are associated with this submodel are essential for finding its exact solutions. Using Lie reductions, we construct new families of exact solutions of the inviscid Burgers equation and the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation in closed or parametric form. We also exhaustively described generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and conservation laws of the submodel, which gives the corresponding nonlocal and hidden structures for the inviscid Burgers equation and the dispersionless Nyzhnyk equation, respectively.

Surprising symmetry properties and exact solutions of Kolmogorov backward equations with power diffusivity

Using the original advanced version of the direct method, we efficiently compute the equivalence groupoids and equivalence groups of two peculiar classes of Kolmogorov backward equations with power diffusivity and solve the problems of their complete group classifications. The results on the equivalence groups are double-checked with the algebraic method. Within these classes, the remarkable Fokker-Planck and the fine Kolmogorov backward equations are distinguished by their exceptional symmetry properties. We extend the known results on these two equations to their counterparts with respect to a nontrivial discrete equivalence transformation. Additionally, we carry out Lie reductions of the equations under consideration up to the point equivalence, exhaustively study their hidden Lie symmetries and generate wider families of their new exact solutions via acting by their recursion operators on constructed Lie-invariant solutions. This analysis reveals eight powers of the space variable with exponents -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 as values of the diffusion coefficient that are prominent due to symmetry properties of the corresponding equations.

On the prolongation of a local hydrodynamic-type Hamiltonian operator to a nonlocal one

Nonlocal Hamiltonian operators of Ferapontov type are well-known objects that naturally arise local from Hamiltonian operators of Dubrovin-Novikov type with the help of three constructions, Dirac reduction, recursion scheme and reciprocal transformation. We provide an additional construction, namely the prolongation of a local hydrodynamic-type Hamiltonian operator of a subsystem to its nonlocal counterpart for the entire system. We exemplify this construction by a system governing an isothermal no-slip drift flux.

Point and generalized symmetries of the heat equation revisited

We derive a nice representation for point symmetry transformations of the (1+1)-dimensional linear heat equation and properly interpret them. This allows us to prove that the pseudogroup of these transformations has exactly two connected components. That is, the heat equation admits a single independent discrete symmetry, which can be chosen to be alternating the sign of the dependent variable. We introduce the notion of pseudo-discrete elements of a Lie group and show that alternating the sign of the space variable, which was for a long time misinterpreted as a discrete symmetry of the heat equation, is in fact a pseudo-discrete element of its essential point symmetry group. The classification of subalgebras of the essential Lie invariance algebra of the heat equation is enhanced and the description of generalized symmetries of this equation is refined as well. We also consider the Burgers equation because of its relation to the heat equation and prove that it admits no discrete point symmetries. The developed approach to point-symmetry groups whose elements have components that are linear fractional in some variables can directly be extended to many other linear and nonlinear differential equations.

Admissible transformations and Lie symmetries of linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations

We revisit the results on admissible transformations between normal linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations with an arbitrary number of dependent variables under several appropriate gauges of the arbitrary elements parameterizing these systems. For each class from the constructed chain of nested gauged classes of such systems, we single out its singular subclass, which appears to consist of systems being similar to the elementary (free particle) system whereas the regular subclass is the complement of the singular one. This allows us to exhaustively describe the equivalence groupoids of the above classes as well as of their singular and regular subclasses. Applying various algebraic techniques, we establish principal properties of Lie symmetries of the systems under consideration and outline ways for completely classifying these symmetries. In particular, we compute the sharp lower and upper bounds for the dimensions of the maximal Lie invariance algebras possessed by systems from each of the above classes and subclasses. We also show how equivalence transformations and Lie symmetries can be used for reduction of order of such systems and their integration. As an illustrative example of using the theory developed, we solve the complete group classification problems for all these classes in the case of two dependent variables.

Generalized symmetries of remarkable (1+2)-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation

Using an original method, we find the algebra of generalized symmetries of a remarkable (1+2)-dimensional ultraparabolic Fokker-Planck equation, which is also called the Kolmogorov equation and is singled out within the entire class of ultraparabolic linear second-order partial differential equations with three independent variables by its wonderful symmetry properties. It turns out that the essential subalgebra of this algebra, which consists of linear generalized symmetries, is generated by the recursion operators associated with the nilradical of the essential Lie invariance algebra of the Kolmogorov equation, and the Casimir operator of the Levi factor of the latter algebra unexpectedly arises in the consideration. We also establish an isomorphism between this algebra and the Lie algebra associated with the second Weyl algebra, which provides a dual perspective for studying their properties. After developing the theoretical background of finding exact solutions of homogeneous linear systems of differential equations using their linear generalized symmetries, we efficiently apply it to the Kolmogorov equation.

Algebraic method of group classification for semi-normalized classes of differential equations

We generalize the notion of semi-normalized classes of systems of differential equations, study properties of such classes and extend the algebraic method of group classification to them. In particular, we prove the important theorems on factoring out symmetry groups and invariance algebras of systems from semi-normalized classes and on splitting such groups and algebras within disjointedly semi-normalized classes. Nontrivial particular examples of classes that arise in real-world applications and showcase the relevance of the developed theory are provided. To convincingly illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method, we apply it to the group classification problem for the class of linear Schrödinger equations with complex-valued potentials and the general value of the space dimension. We compute the equivalence groupoid of the class by the direct method and thus show that this class is uniformly semi-normalized with respect to the linear superposition of solutions. This is why the group classification problem reduces to the classification of specific low-dimensional subalgebras of the associated equivalence algebra, which is completely realized for the case of space dimension two. Splitting into different classification cases is based on three integer parameters that are invariant with respect to equivalence transformations. We also single out those of the obtained results that are relevant to linear Schrödinger equations with real-valued potentials.

Extended symmetry analysis of remarkable (1+2)-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation

We carry out the extended symmetry analysis of an ultraparabolic Fokker-Planck equation with three independent variables, which is also called the Kolmogorov equation and is singled out within the class of such Fokker-Planck equations by its remarkable symmetry properties. In particular, its essential Lie invariance algebra is eight-dimensional, which is the maximum dimension within the above class. We compute the complete point symmetry pseudogroup of the Fokker-Planck equation using the direct method, analyze its structure and single out its essential subgroup. After listing inequivalent one- and two-dimensional subalgebras of the essential and maximal Lie invariance algebras of this equation, we exhaustively classify its Lie reductions, carry out its peculiar generalized reductions and relate the latter reductions to generating solutions with iterative action of Lie-symmetry operators. As a result, we construct wide families of exact solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation, in particular, those parameterized by an arbitrary finite number of arbitrary solutions of the (1+1)-dimensional linear heat equation. We also establish the point similarity of the Fokker-Planck equation to the (1+2)-dimensional Kramers equations whose essential Lie invariance algebras are eight-dimensional, which allows us to find wide families of exact solutions of these Kramers equations in an easy way.

Lie reductions and exact solutions of dispersionless Nizhnik equation

We exhaustively classify the Lie reductions of the real dispersionless Nizhnik equation to partial differential equations in two independent variables and to ordinary differential equations. Lie and point symmetries of reduced equations are comprehensively studied, including the analysis of which of them correspond to hidden symmetries of the original equation. If necessary, associated Lie reductions of a nonlinear Lax representation of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation are carried out as well. As a result, we construct wide families of new invariant solutions of this equation in explicit form in terms of elementary, Lambert and hypergeometric functions as well as in parametric or implicit form. We show that Lie reductions to algebraic equations lead to no new solutions of this equation in addition to the constructed ones. Multiplicative separation of variables is used for illustrative construction of non-invariant solutions.

Improving physics-informed DeepONets with hard constraints

Current physics-informed (standard or deep operator) neural networks still rely on accurately learning the initial and/or boundary conditions of the system of differential equations they are solving. In contrast, standard numerical methods involve such conditions in computations without needing to learn them. In this study, we propose to improve current physics-informed deep learning strategies such that initial and/or boundary conditions do not need to be learned and are represented exactly in the predicted solution. Moreover, this method guarantees that when a deep operator network is applied multiple times to time-step a solution of an initial value problem, the resulting function is at least continuous.

Generalized symmetries of Burgers equation

Despite the number of relevant considerations in the literature, the algebra of generalized symmetries of the Burgers equation has not been exhaustively described. We fill this gap, presenting a basis of this algebra in an explicit form and proving that the two well-known recursion operators of the Burgers equation and two seed generalized symmetries, which are evolution forms of its Lie symmetries, suffice to generate this algebra. The core of the proof is essentially simplified by using the original technique of choosing special coordinates in the associated jet space.

Extended symmetry analysis of (1+2)-dimensional fine Kolmogorov backward equation

Within the class of (1+2)-dimensional ultraparabolic linear equations, we distinguish a fine Kolmogorov backward equation with a quadratic diffusivity. Modulo the point equivalence, it is a unique equation within the class whose essential Lie invariance algebra is five-dimensional and nonsolvable. Using the direct method, we compute the point symmetry pseudogroup of this equation and analyze its structure. In particular, we single out its essential subgroup and classify its discrete elements. We exhaustively classify all subalgebras of the corresponding essential Lie invariance algebra up to inner automorphisms and up to the action of the essential point-symmetry group. This allowed us to classify Lie reductions and Lie invariant solutions of the equation under consideration. We also discuss the generation of its solutions using point and linear generalized symmetries and carry out its peculiar generalized reductions. As a result, we construct wide families of its solutions parameterized by an arbitrary finite number of arbitrary solutions of the (1+1)-dimensional linear heat equation or one or two arbitrary solutions of (1+1)-dimensional linear heat equations with inverse square potentials.

Point- and contact-symmetry pseudogroups of dispersionless Nizhnik equation

Applying an original megaideal-based version of the algebraic method, we compute the point-symmetry pseudogroup of the dispersionless (potential symmetric) Nizhnik equation. This is the first example of this kind in the literature, where there is no need to use the direct method for completing the computation. The analogous studies are also carried out for the corresponding nonlinear Lax representation and the dispersionless counterpart of the symmetric Nizhnik system. We also first apply the megaideal-based version of the algebraic method to find the contact-symmetry (pseudo)group of a partial differential equation. It is shown that the contact-symmetry pseudogroup of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation coincides with the first prolongation of its point-symmetry pseudogroup. We check whether the subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation that naturally arise in the course of the above computations define the diffeomorphisms stabilizing this algebra or its first prolongation. In addition, we construct all the third-order partial differential equations in three independent variables that admit the same Lie invariance algebra. We also find a set of geometric properties of the dispersionless Nizhnik equation that exhaustively defines it.

Point-symmetry pseudogroup, Lie reductions and exact solutions of Boiti-Leon-Pempinelli system

We carry out extended symmetry analysis of the (1+2)-dimensional Boiti-Leon-Pempinelli system, which corrects, enhances and generalizes many results existing in the literature. The point-symmetry pseudogroup of this system is computed using an original megaideal-based version of the algebraic method. A number of meticulously selected differential constraints allow us to construct families of exact solutions of this system, which are significantly larger than all known ones. After classifying one- and two-dimensional subalgebras of the entire (infinite-dimensional) maximal Lie invariance algebra of this system, we study only its essential Lie reductions, which give solutions beyond the above solution families. Among reductions of the Boiti-Leon-Pempinelli system using differential constraints or Lie symmetries, we identify a number of famous partial and ordinary differential equations. We also show how all the constructed solution families can significantly be extended by Laplace and Darboux transformations.

Mapping method of group classification

We revisit the entire framework of group classification of differential equations. After introducing the notion of weakly similar classes of differential equations, we develop the mapping method of group classification for such classes, which generalizes all the versions of this method that have been presented in the literature. The mapping method is applied to group classification of various classes of Kolmogorov equations and of Fokker-Planck equations in the case of space dimension one. The equivalence groupoids and the equivalence groups of these classes are computed. The group classification problems for these classes with respect to the corresponding equivalence groups are reduced to finding all inequivalent solutions of heat equations with inequivalent potentials admitting Lie-symmetry extensions. This reduction allows us to exhaustively solve the group classification problems for the classes of Kolmogorov and Fokker-Planck equations with time-independent coefficients.

Physics-informed neural networks for the shallow-water equations on the sphere

We propose the use of physics-informed neural networks for solving the shallow-water equations on the sphere in the meteorological context. Physics-informed neural networks are trained to satisfy the differential equations along with the prescribed initial and boundary data, and thus can be seen as an alternative approach to solving differential equations compared to traditional numerical approaches such as finite difference, finite volume or spectral methods. We discuss the training difficulties of physics-informed neural networks for the shallow-water equations on the sphere and propose a simple multi-model approach to tackle test cases of comparatively long time intervals. Here we train a sequence of neural networks instead of a single neural network for the entire integration interval. We also avoid the use of a boundary value loss by encoding the boundary conditions in a custom neural network layer. We illustrate the abilities of the method by solving the most prominent test cases proposed by Williamson et al. [J. Comput. Phys. 102 (1992), 211-224].

Extended symmetry analysis of two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation

We carry out the extended symmetry analysis of a two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation. Its complete point-symmetry group is found using the algebraic method, and all its generalized symmetries are proved equivalent to its Lie symmetries. We also prove that the space of conservation laws of this equation is infinite-dimensional and is naturally isomorphic to the solution space of the (1+1)-dimensional backward linear heat equation. Lie reductions of the two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation are comprehensively studied in the optimal way and new Lie invariant solutions are constructed. We additionally consider solutions that also satisfy an analogous nondegenerate Burgers equation. In total, we construct four families of solutions of two-dimensional degenerate Burgers equation that are expressed in terms of arbitrary (nonzero) solutions of the (1+1)-dimensional linear heat equation. Various kinds of hidden symmetries and hidden conservation laws (local and potential ones) are discussed as well. As a by-product, we exhaustively describe generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and conservation laws of the transport equation, also called the inviscid Burgers equation, and construct new invariant solutions of the nonlinear diffusion and diffusion-convection equations with power nonlinearities of degree -1/2.
