Reduction operators of Burgers equation

The solution of the problem on reduction operators and nonclassical reductions of the Burgers equation is systematically treated and completed. A new proof of the theorem on the special "no-go" case of regular reduction operators is presented, and the representation of the coefficients of operators in terms of solutions of the initial equation is constructed for this case. All possible nonclassical reductions of the Burgers equation to single ordinary differential equations are exhaustively described. Any Lie reduction of the Burgers equation proves to be equivalent via the Hopf-Cole transformation to a parameterized family of Lie reductions of the linear heat equation.

Lie reduction and exact solutions of vorticity equation on rotating sphere

Following our paper [J. Math. Phys. 50 (2009) 123102], we systematically carry out Lie symmetry analysis for the barotropic vorticity equation on the rotating sphere. All finite-dimensional subalgebras of the corresponding maximal Lie invariance algebra, which is infinite-dimensional, are classified. Appropriate subalgebras are then used to exhaustively determine Lie reductions of the equation under consideration. The relevance of the constructed exact solutions for the description of real-world physical processes is discussed. It is shown that the results of the above paper are directly related to the results of the recent letter by N. H. Ibragimov and R. N. Ibragimov [Phys. Lett. A 375 (2011) 3858] in which Lie symmetries and some exact solutions of the nonlinear Euler equations for an atmospheric layer in spherical geometry were determined.

Reduction operators and exact solutions of generalized Burgers equations

Reduction operators of generalized Burgers equations are studied. A connection between these equations and potential fast diffusion equations with power nonlinearity -1 via reduction operators is established. Exact solutions of generalized Burgers equations are constructed using this connection and known solutions of the constant-coefficient potential fast diffusion equation.

Complete group classification of a class of nonlinear wave equations

Preliminary group classification became prominent as an approach to symmetry analysis of differential equations due to the paper by Ibragimov, Torrisi and Valenti [J. Math. Phys. 32, 2988-2995] in which partial preliminary group classification of a class of nonlinear wave equations was carried out via the classification of one-dimensional Lie symmetry extensions related to a fixed finite-dimensional subalgebra of the infinite-dimensional equivalence algebra of the class under consideration. In the present paper we implement, up to both usual and general point equivalence, the complete group classification of the same class using the algebraic method of group classification. This includes the complete preliminary group classification of the class and finding Lie symmetry extensions which are not associated with subalgebras of the equivalence algebra. The complete preliminary group classification is based on listing all inequivalent subalgebras of the whole infinite-dimensional equivalence algebra whose projections are qualified as maximal extensions of the kernel algebra. The set of admissible point transformations of the class is exhaustively described in terms of the partition of the class into normalized subclasses. A version of the algebraic method for finding the complete equivalence groups of a general class of differential equations is proposed.

Enhanced preliminary group classification of a class of generalized diffusion equations

The method of preliminary group classification is rigorously defined, enhanced and related to the theory of group classification of differential equations. Typical weaknesses in papers on this method are discussed and strategies to overcome them are presented. The preliminary group classification of the class of generalized diffusion equations of the form u_t=f(x,u)u_x^2+g(x,u)u_{xx} is carried out. This includes a justification for applying this method to the given class, the simultaneous computation of the equivalence algebra and equivalence group, as well as the classification of inequivalent appropriate subalgebras of the whole infinite-dimensional equivalence algebra. The extensions of the kernel algebra, which are induced by such subalgebras, are exhaustively described. These results improve those recently published in Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul.

Generalized conditional symmetries of evolution equations

We analyze the relationship of generalized conditional symmetries of evolution equations to the formal compatibility and passivity of systems of differential equations as well as to systems of vector fields in involution. Earlier results on the connection between generalized conditional invariance and generalized reduction of evolution equations are revisited. This leads to a no-go theorem on determining equations for operators of generalized conditional symmetry. It is also shown that up to certain equivalences there exists a one-to-one correspondence between generalized conditional symmetries of an evolution equation and parametric families of its solutions.

Simplest potential conservation laws of linear evolution equations

Every simplest potential conservation law of any (1+1)-dimensional linear evolution equation of even order proves induced by a local conservation law of the same equation. This claim is true also for linear simplest potential conservation laws of (1+1)-dimensional linear evolution equations of odd order, which are related to linear potential systems. We also derive an effective criterion for checking whether a quadratic conservation law of a simplest linear potential system is a purely potential conservation law of a (1+1)-dimensional linear evolution equation of odd order.

Lie symmetry analysis and exact solutions of the quasi-geostrophic two-layer problem

The quasi-geostrophic two-layer model is of superior interest in dynamic meteorology since it is one of the easiest ways to study baroclinic processes in geophysical fluid dynamics. The complete set of point symmetries of the two-layer equations is determined. An optimal set of one- and two-dimensional inequivalent subalgebras of the maximal Lie invariance algebra is constructed. On the basis of these subalgebras we exhaustively carry out group-invariant reduction and compute various classes of exact solutions. Where possible, reference to the physical meaning of the exact solutions is given. In particular, the well-known baroclinic Rossby wave solutions in the two-layer model are rediscovered.

Lowest dimensional example on non-universality of generalized Inönü-Wigner contractions

We prove that there exists just one pair of complex four-dimensional Lie algebras such that a well-defined contraction among them is not equivalent to a generalized IW-contraction (or to a one-parametric subgroup degeneration in conventional algebraic terms). Over the field of real numbers, this pair of algebras is split into two pairs with the same contracted algebra. The example we constructed demonstrates that even in the dimension four generalized IW-contractions are not sufficient for realizing all possible contractions, and this is the lowest dimension in which generalized IW-contractions are not universal. Moreover, this is also the first example of nonexistence of generalized IW-contraction for the case when the contracted algebra is not characteristically nilpotent and, therefore, admits nontrivial diagonal derivations. The lower bound (equal to three) of nonnegative integer parameter exponents which are sufficient to realize all generalized IW-contractions of four-dimensional Lie algebras is also found.

Point symmetry group of the barotropic vorticity equation

The complete point symmetry group of the barotropic vorticity equation on the $β$-plane is computed using the direct method supplemented with two different techniques. The first technique is based on the preservation of any megaideal of the maximal Lie invariance algebra of a differential equation by the push-forwards of point symmetries of the same equation. The second technique involves a priori knowledge on normalization properties of a class of differential equations containing the equation under consideration. Both of these techniques are briefly outlined.

Conservation laws and normal forms of evolution equations

We study local conservation laws for evolution equations in two independent variables. In particular, we present normal forms for the equations admitting one or two low-order conservation laws. Examples include Harry Dym equation, Korteweg-de-Vries-type equations, and Schwarzian KdV equation. It is also shown that for linear evolution equations all their conservation laws are (modulo trivial conserved vectors) at most quadratic in the dependent variable and its derivatives.

Is a nonclassical symmetry a symmetry?

Various versions of the definition of nonclassical symmetries existing in the literature are analyzed. Comparing properties of Lie and nonclassical symmetries leads to the conclusion that in fact a nonclassical symmetry is not a symmetry in the usual sense. Hence the term "reduction operator" is suggested instead of the name "operator of nonclassical symmetries". It is shown that in contrast to the case of single partial differential equations a satisfactory definition of nonclassical symmetries for systems of such equations has not been proposed up to now. Moreover, the cardinality of essential nonclassical symmetries is discussed, taking into account equivalence relations on the entire set of nonclassical symmetries.

Lie symmetries and exact solutions of the barotropic vorticity equation

Lie group methods are used for the study of various issues related to symmetries and exact solutions of the barotropic vorticity equation. The Lie symmetries of the barotropic vorticity equations on the $f$- and $β$-planes, as well as on the sphere in rotating and rest reference frames, are determined. A symmetry background for reducing the rotating reference frame to the rest frame is presented. The one- and two-dimensional inequivalent subalgebras of the Lie invariance algebras of both equations are exhaustively classified and then used to compute invariant solutions of the vorticity equations. This provides large classes of exact solutions, which include both Rossby and Rossby--Haurwitz waves as special cases. We also discuss the possibility of partial invariance for the $β$-plane equation, thereby further extending the family of its exact solutions. This is done in a more systematic and complete way than previously available in literature.

More common errors in finding exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations. I

In the recent paper by Kudryashov [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simulat., 2009, V.14, 3507-3529] seven common errors in finding exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations were listed and discussed in detail. We indicate two more common errors concerning the similarity (equivalence with respect to point transformations) and linearizability of differential equations and then discuss the first of them. Classes of generalized KdV and mKdV equations with variable coefficients are used in order to clarify our conclusions. We investigate admissible point transformations in classes of generalized KdV equations, obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions of similarity of such equations to the standard KdV and mKdV equations and carried out the exhaustive group classification of a class of variable-coefficient KdV equations. Then a number of recent papers on such equations are commented using the above results. It is shown that exact solutions were constructed in these papers only for equations which are reduced by point transformations to the standard KdV and mKdV equations. Therefore, exact solutions of such equations can be obtained from known solutions of the standard KdV and mKdV equations in an easier way than by direct solving. The same statement is true for other equations which are equivalent to well-known equations with respect to point transformations.

Symmetry justification of Lorenz' maximum simplification

In 1960 Edward Lorenz (1917-2008) published a pioneering work on the `maximum simplification' of the barotropic vorticity equation. He derived a coupled three-mode system and interpreted it as the minimum core of large-scale fluid mechanics on a `finite but unbounded' domain. The model was obtained in a heuristic way, without giving a rigorous justification for the chosen selection of modes. In this paper, it is shown that one can legitimate Lorenz' choice by using symmetry transformations of the spectral form of the vorticity equation. The Lorenz three-mode model arises as the final step in a hierarchy of models constructed via the component reduction by means of symmetries. In this sense, the Lorenz model is indeed the `maximum simplification' of the vorticity equation.

Symmetry Analysis of Barotropic Potential Vorticity Equation

Recently F. Huang [Commun. Theor. Phys. V.42 (2004) 903] and X. Tang and P.K. Shukla [Commun. Theor. Phys. V.49 (2008) 229] investigated symmetry properties of the barotropic potential vorticity equation without forcing and dissipation on the beta-plane. This equation is governed by two dimensionless parameters, $F$ and $β$, representing the ratio of the characteristic length scale to the Rossby radius of deformation and the variation of earth' angular rotation, respectively. In the present paper it is shown that in the case $F\ne 0$ there exists a well-defined point transformation to set $β= 0$. The classification of one- and two-dimensional Lie subalgebras of the Lie symmetry algebra of the potential vorticity equation is given for the parameter combination $F\ne 0$ and $β= 0$. Based upon this classification, distinct classes of group-invariant solutions is obtained and extended to the case $β\ne 0$.

Singular reduction operators in two dimensions

The notion of singular reduction operators, i.e., of singular operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of partial differential equations in two independent variables is introduced. All possible reductions of these equations to first-order ODEs are are exhaustively described. As examples, properties of singular reduction operators of (1+1)-dimensional evolution and wave equations are studied. It is shown how to favourably enhance the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for this class by an in-depth prior study of the corresponding singular vector fields.
