Stability for the inverse resonance problem for the CMV operator

For the class of unitary CMV operators with super-exponentially decaying Verblunsky coefficients we give a new proof of the inverse resonance problem of reconstructing the operator from its resonances - the zeros of the Jost function. We establish a stability result for the inverse resonance problem that shows continuous dependence of the operator coefficients on the location of the resonances.

Multiscale Analysis in Momentum Space for Quasi-periodic Potential in Dimension Two

We consider a polyharmonic operator $H=(-Δ)^l+V(\x)$ in dimension two with $l\geq 2$, $l$ being an integer, and a quasi-periodic potential $V(\x)$. We prove that the absolutely continuous spectrum of $H$ contains a semiaxis and there is a family of generalized eigenfunctions at every point of this semiaxis with the following properties. First, the eigenfunctions are close to plane waves $e^{i< \k,\x>}$ at the high energy region. Second, the isoenergetic curves in the space of momenta $\k$ corresponding to these eigenfunctions have a form of slightly distorted circles with holes (Cantor type structure). A new method of multiscale analysis in the momentum space is developed to prove these results.

Complete asymptotic expansion of the integrated density of states of multidimensional almost-periodic pseudo-differential operators

We obtain a complete asymptotic expansion of the integrated density of states of operators of the form H =(-Δ)^w +B in R^d. Here w >0, and B belongs to a wide class of almost-periodic self-adjoint pseudo-differential operators of order less than 2w. In particular, we obtain such an expansion for magnetic Schrödinger operators with either smooth periodic or generic almost-periodic coefficients.

The Krein-von Neumann Extension and its Connection to an Abstract Buckling Problem

We prove the unitary equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly positive operator, $S\geq εI_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some $ε>0$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ to an abstract buckling problem operator. In the concrete case where $S=\bar{-Δ|_{C_0^\infty(Ω)}}$ in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ for $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ an open, bounded (and sufficiently regular) domain, this recovers, as a particular case of a general result due to G. Grubb, that the eigenvalue problem for the Krein Laplacian $S_K$ (i.e., the Krein--von Neumann extension of $S$), \[ S_K v = λv, \quad λ\neq 0, \] is in one-to-one correspondence with the problem of {\em the buckling of a clamped plate}, \[ (-Δ)^2u=λ(-Δ) u \text{in} Ω, \quad λ\neq 0, \quad u\in H_0^2(Ω), \] where $u$ and $v$ are related via the pair of formulas \[ u = S_F^{-1} (-Δ) v, \quad v = λ^{-1}(-Δ) u, \] with $S_F$ the Friedrichs extension of $S$. This establishes the Krein extension as a natural object in elasticity theory (in analogy to the Friedrichs extension, which found natural applications in quantum mechanics, elasticity, etc.).

On the Inverse Resonance Problem for Schrodinger Operators

We consider Schrödinger operators on [0,\infty) with compactly supported, possibly complex-valued potentials in L^1([0,\infty)). It is known (at least in the case of a real-valued potential) that the location of eigenvalues and resonances determines the potential uniquely. From the physical point of view one expects that large resonances are increasingly insignificant for the reconstruction of the potential from the data. In this paper we prove the validity of this statement, i.e., we show conditional stability for finite data. As a by-product we also obtain a uniqueness result for the inverse resonance problem for complex-valued potentials.

Blow up and regularity for fractal Burgers equation

The paper is a comprehensive study of the existence, uniqueness, blow up and regularity properties of solutions of the Burgers equation with fractional dissipation. We prove existence of the finite time blow up for the power of Laplacian $α< 1/2,$ and global existence as well as analyticity of solution for $α\geq 1/2.$ We also prove the existence of solutions with very rough initial data $u_0 \in L^p,$ $1 < p < \infty.$ Many of the results can be extended to a more general class of equations, including the surface quasi-geostrophic equation.

Relaxation Enhancement by Time-Periodic Flows

We study enhancement of diffusive mixing by fast incompressible time-periodic flows. The class of relaxation-enhancing flows that are especially efficient in speeding up mixing has been introduced in [2]. The relaxation-enhancing property of a flow has been shown to be intimately related to the properties of the dynamical system it generates. In particular, time-independent flows $u$ such that the operator $u \cdot \nabla$ has sufficiently smooth eigenfunctions are not relaxation-enhancing. Here we extend results of [2] to time-periodic flows $u(x,t)$ and in particular show that there exist flows such that for each fixed time the flow is Hamiltonian, but the resulting time-dependent flow is relaxation-enhancing. Thus we confirm the physical intuition that time dependence of a flow may aid mixing. We also provide an extension of our results to the case of a nonlinear diffusion model. The proofs are based on a general criterion for the decay of a semigroup generated by an operator of the form $Γ+iAL(t)$ with a negative unbounded self-adjoint operator $Γ$, a time-periodic self-adjoint operator-valued function $L(t)$, and a parameter $A>>1$.
