Carrollian limit of NS-NS and Heterotic Supergravity

We construct the Carrollian limit of NS--NS and heterotic supergravity through an ultra-relativistic expansion of the fields. An appropriate scaling of the dilaton renders the measure finite and compensates the divergences arising from the NS-NS supergravity Lagrangian, giving a finite action as $w\rightarrow\infty$. We then extend the construction to heterotic supergravity (neglecting fermions) by incorporating the non-Abelian gauge field together with the Green--Schwarz (GS) mechanism. The resulting theory contains a finite gauge sector consistently coupled to gravity, and the GS mechanism for the Carrollian 1-form field can be trivialized imposing field redefinitions. Then, we investigate the Carrollian equations of motion by both expanding the relativistic equations and deriving them from a variational principle. We also show that the leading $\alpha'$-corrected $\hat{\rm Riem}^2$ contribution remains finite under a rescaling of the string parameter $\alpha'\rightarrow \frac{\alpha'_c}{w^2}$, opening further research towards the full four-derivative effective action. Finally, we discuss the potential connection with the worldsheet formalism of the Carrollian string theory.

Kosmann derivative and momentum maps from a duality covariant framework

A covariant implementation of diffeomorphisms in the presence of local symmetries is a nontrivial aspect of gravitational theories. In Double Field Theory, this is achieved through the so-called generalized Kosmann derivative. In this work, we show that the generalized Kosmann derivative admits a natural formulation entirely in terms of generalized fluxes through the inclusion of a compensating term that plays the role of a generalized momentum map, yielding a fully determined and covariant operator that provides a covariant realization of generalized diffeomorphisms. When parameterized in terms of the field content of heterotic supergravity, the resulting symmetry transformations give rise to momentum maps at the supergravity level, offering a duality-covariant interpretation of these objects. This framework provides a natural setting for the construction of conserved currents and Noether charges in doubled geometry with internal symmetries, with direct implications for black hole thermodynamics and its higher-derivative corrections in a duality-covariant setting.

Non-closed scalar charge in four-dimensional Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet black hole thermodynamics

We develop a covariant differential-form framework to define scalar charges for stationary, asymptotically flat black holes in $4$--dimensional Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a general scalar coupling function. Contracting the scalar field equation of motion with the horizon generator $k$ yields a non-closed-form scalar charge, revealing a bulk contribution encoded in a $3$--form, which measures the obstruction to its closedness. In the presence of shift-symmetry, this obstruction vanishes and the $2$--form scalar charge satisfies a Gauss law, depending solely on boundary data. Geometrically, this reproduces known topological results in the shift-symmetric limit. This framework allows us to analyze the role of the non-closed scalar charges in black hole thermodynamics through the Smarr formula for more general couplings and provide a covariant, charge-based interpretation of the spontaneous scalarization mechanism, showing how the behavior of the scalar charge and the bulk term capture the instability of scalar-free black holes and the emergence of scalar hair. Our results offer a unified geometric understanding of the role of scalar charges and the mechanism of spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Generalized Komar charges and Smarr formulas for black holes and boson stars

The standard Komar charge is a $(d-2)$-form that can be defined in spacetimes admitting a Killing vector and which is closed when the vacuum Einstein equations are satisfied. Its integral at spatial infinity (the Komar integral) gives the conserved charge associated to the Killing vector, and, due to its on-shell closedness, the same value (expressed in terms of other physical variables) is obtained integrating over the event horizon (if any). This equality is the basis of the Smarr formula. This charge can be generalized so that it still is closed on-shell in presence of matter and its integrals give generalizations of the Smarr formula. We show how the Komar charge and other closed $(d-2)$-form charges can be used to prove non-existence theorems for gravitational solitons and boson stars. In particular, we show how one can deal with generalized symmetric fields (invariant under a combination of isometries and other global symmetries) and how the geralized symmetric ansatz permits to evade the non-existence theorems.

On the existence of thermodynamically stable asymptotically flat black holes

We use the quasilocal formalism of Brown and York, supplemented with counterterms, to investigate the thermodynamics of asymptotically flat black holes. We consider two families of exact regular black hole solutions, which are thermodynamically stable. The first one consists of four-dimensional static charged hairy black holes in extended supergravity. The second family consists of five-dimensional static charged black holes in Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. Despite the fact that their characteristics are completely different, we found a striking similarity between their thermodynamic behaviour.

Hairy black holes, scalar charges and extended thermodynamics

We explore the use of the recently defined scalar charge which satisfies a Gauss law in stationary spacetimes, in the context of theories with a scalar potential. We find new conditions that this potential has to satisfy in order to allow for static, asymptotically-flat black-hole solutions with regular horizons and non-trivial scalar field. These conditions are equivalent to some of the known ``no-hair'' theorems (such as Bekenstein's). We study the extended thermodynamics of these systems, deriving a first law and a Smarr formula. As an example, we study the Anabalón-Oliva hairy black hole

On scalar charges and black-hole thermodynamics

We revisit the first law of black hole thermodynamics in 4-dimensional theories containing scalar and Abelian vector fields coupled to gravity using Wald's formalism and a new definition of scalar charge as an integral over a 2-surface which satisfies a Gauss law in stationary black-hole spacetimes. We focus on ungauged supergravity-inspired theories with symmetric sigma models whose symmetries generate electric-magnetic dualities leaving invariant their equations of motion. Our manifestly duality-invariant form of the first law is compatible with the one obtained by of Gibbons, Kallosh and Kol. We also obtain the general expression for the scalar charges of a stationary black hole in terms of the other physical parameters of the solution and the position of the horizon, generalizing the expression obtained by Pacilio for dilaton black oles.

Scalar charges and the first law of black hole thermodynamics

We present a variational formulation of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in flat spacetime, when the asymptotic value of the scalar field is not fixed. We obtain the boundary terms that make the variational principle well posed and then compute the finite gravitational action and corresponding Brown-York stress tensor. We show that the total energy has a new contribution that depends of the asymptotic value of the scalar field and discuss the role of scalar charges for the first law of thermodynamics. We also extend our analysis to hairy black holes in Anti-de Sitter spacetime and investigate the thermodynamics of an exact solution that breaks the conformal symmetry of the boundary.
