Matter sources of gauge thermodynamics

A unified gauge approach to both, dynamics and thermodynamics involving gravity, is developed from the local realization of the Poincaré group as a particular instance of a spacetime group including translations. The formalism is applied to study the physical features of the spherical non-rotating matter source of an inner Schwarzschild metric.

A proposal of foundation of spacetime geometry

A common approach to metric-affine, local Poincaré, special-relativistic and Galilei spacetime geometry is developed. Starting from an affine composite bundle, we introduce local reference frames and their evolution along worldlines and we study both, absolute and relative simultaneity postulates, giving rise to alternative concepts of spacetime. In particular, the construction of the Minkowski metric, and its required invariance, allows either to reorganize the original affine bundle as a metric-affine geometry with explicit Lorentz symmetry, or to restrict it to a Poincaré geometry, both of them constituting the background of a wide class of gauge theories of gravity.

Thermodynamics in dynamical spacetimes

We derive a general formulation of the laws of irreversible thermodynamics in the presence of electromagnetism and gravity. For the handling of macroscopic material media, we use as a guide the field equations and the Noether identities of fundamental matter as deduced in the framework of gauge theories of the Poincaré$\otimes U(1)$ group.

Motion in gauge theories of gravity

A description of motion is proposed, adapted to the composite bundle interpretation of Poincaré Gauge Theory. Reference frames, relative positions and time evolution are characterized in gauge-theoretical terms. The approach is illustrated by an appropriate formulation of the familiar example of orbital motion induced by Schwarzschild spacetime.

Translations and dynamics

We analyze the role played by local translational symmetry in the context of gauge theories of fundamental interactions. Translational connections and fields are introduced, with special attention being paid to their universal coupling to other variables, as well as to their contributions to field equations and to conserved quantities.

Dynamically broken Anti-de Sitter action for gravity

Due to a suitable Higgs mechanism, a standard Anti-de Sitter gauge theory becomes spontaneously broken. The resulting Lorentz invariant gravitational action includes the Hilbert-Einstein term of ordinary Einstein-Cartan gravity with cosmological constant, plus contributions quadratic in curvature and torsion, and a scalar Higgs sector.

Gravitational contribution to fermion masses

In the context of a nonlinear gauge theory of the Poincaré group, we show that covariant derivatives of Dirac fields include a coupling to the translational connections, manifesting itself in the matter action as a universal background mass contribution to fermions.

A cosmological model in Weyl-Cartan spacetime

We present a cosmological model for early stages of the universe on the basis of a Weyl-Cartan spacetime. In this model, torsion $T^α$ and nonmetricity $Q_{αβ}$ are proportional to the vacuum polarization. Extending earlier work of one of us (RT), we discuss the behavior of the cosmic scale factor and the Weyl 1-form in detail. We show how our model fits into the more general framework of metric-affine gravity (MAG).

Time evolution in the presence of gravity

We present a suggestion on the interpretation of canonical time evolution when gravitation is present, based on the nonlinear gauge approach to gravity. Essentially, our proposal consists of an internal-time concept, with the time variable taken from the dynamical fields characteristic of the nonlinear realization of the internal time-translational symmetry. Physical time evolution requires the latter symmetry to be broken. After disregarding other breaking mechanisms, we appeal to the Jordan-Brans-Dicke action, conveniently interpreted, to achieve that goal. We show that nontrivial time evolution follows, the special relativistic limit being recovered in the absence of gravity.

Hyperfluid - a model of classical matter with hypermomentum

A variational theory of a continuous medium is developed the elements of which carry momentum and hypermomentum (hyperfluid). It is shown that the structure of the sources in metric-affine gravity is predetermined by the conservation identities and, when using the Weyssenhoff ansatz, these explicitly yield the hyperfluid currents.
